"I don't think Pixelfed needs to exist, use Mastodon"

Pixelfed provides a photo/video focused experience, and offers more features geared towards this (filters, collections, portfolios) than Mastodon does

You can use Mastodon or other platforms to share photos

When content is based around photos/videos, it's a much different experience

"I don't think TikTok or Instagram need to exist. Twitter supports photos & video"

@dansup he don't need it because he can't produce good content, just useless comments
Duncan Midwinter

@dansup the more good platforms, the better!
Maybe someone wants to be on a mastodon instance for programming and a pixelfed instance for cats!

@dansup
I don't think RDBMS servers need to exist, use Microsoft Access

Niklas Korz

@dankeck You don't need Microsoft Access, just use Excel.

@dansup I don't believe I or anyone should dictate what different apps people come up with when using ActivityPub as foundation. If there will be interest, they will stay around and thrive. It is simple as that.

@dansup so let us log into Pixelfed with our Mastodon accounts. Let me view my existing ActivityPub feed with your photo oriented UI. Why make everyone create a new account? The ability to create third party clients is a *feature* of the Fediverse.

@dansup I don't even know what "stories" are, so I guess I don't understand, but if they are only visible on Pixelfed that's lame.

@dansup still though that doesn't seem to be the point they're making? the point seems to be about the profile, not the app or service. it's the same argument of "generic server, specialized client", where you hook up your server to your client just like imap+smtp.

@dansup yeah. It's not like Instagram became popular despite twitter existing...

@dansup
WE don't need to exist either, but I'm glad we do.

Nah :tg_rose:

@dansup mentions Peertube too... as if Mastodon offers the same features that Peertube offers ._.

Ivan Maljukanoviฤ‡ ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

@dansup

Couldn't agree more.

With the updates in the recent weeks, it's really a smooth and wonderful experience using #pixelfed.

DELETED

@dansup I had the same troughs until I created my Pixelfed account.
Pixelfed is here for people who needs a place like Instagram and Mastodon is here for same thing but Twitter.

Mitex Leo

@dansup Most of my family members are not familiar with platforms like Twitter. They're never going to try Mastodon. Because they're on Facebook and IG. It serves them a different purpose.

Sorry for not responding to that reply. I forgot about it !

Mitex Leo

@dansup We don't need internet because we know how to write letters ...

#fediverse

@dansup
What's cool however is the fact that we can watch videos or read content from another platform on the platform we use. Just imagine getting your YouTube abonmements, the instagram images of your friends and the Facebook posts of your mum to your Twitter timeline! That would be so cool! In the fediverse, this is possible!

@elshid@social.librem.one @dansup@mastodon.social and what if you didn't have to have separate accounts, and follow/block the same people on YouTube/Facebook/Twitter. What if you just had one account, and you you use it with all those different frontends?

Lyre Calliope

@dansup For me this speaks to the value of decoupling servers and clients. Which gives me an idea.

What if I could log into my non-pixelfed servers using the pixelfed app? I know the servers aren't fully pixelfed featured, but it'd be interesting to have the overlapping subset be accessible within pixelfed.

Actually, it'd be awesome to associate my accounts together in pixelfed to have a unified image feed and set a preference for which account to comment from.

This is now a feature request.

Danie van der Merwe

@dansup and don't forget #Pixelfed portfolios too. I suppose yes many only see posts and don't understand those other niche features aimed at photos and video specifically.

Aral Balkan

@dansup @cendawanita Who said that and, more importantly, were they summarily slapped?

loaExMachina

@dansup
The whole point of the fediverse is that people can create a social platform that fit their need and federate it. Assuming some of these platforms didn't "need" to exist, still, their existence needs to be possible for the idea of the fedi to be operational. And how would we know for sure that they are able to exist unless they prove it by existing?

Darnell Clayton :verified:

@dansup ๐Ÿ˜… Yeah, #Mastodon also limits me to sharing 4 photos at a time. On my #Pixelfed instance I can share up to 10 photos (I can extend the amount but that would be overkill.

I like the idea of #Peertube, but bandwidth fees keep me from adopting it (#Vimeo & #Youtube are within my budget).

Scott Small

@dansup I disagree with the first statement in the photo and agree with the second. It would be nice if there were a way to de-couple oneโ€™s identity from a specific ActivityPub service, so we could use Mastodon, PixelFed, and PeerTube all with the same identity.

Suggesting that all other apps should be abandoned, of course, is not the answer.

Tim Ellis (he/him) DJDynamicNC

@dansup As someone who used to scoff at Instagram because "twitter already has photos" (but has since come around), I would like to second this. There is a different experience when the primary orientation is visual rather than text.

Diane ๐Ÿ•ต

@dansup

Wait.

But But. People have different use cases. Having different services optimized for different use cases and yet can interoperate a great and amazing thing.

zeruch

@dansup none of this stuff needs to exist. But just like any artistic/itch to scratch endeavor, people do things for other reasons than a Maslowian "need"

jonny

@dansup wtf this is basically like saying "the fediverse doesn't need to exist" bc the uh whole point is that multiple systems can work together and experiment with different mediums without catastrophic social loss at every fork.

in addition to pixelfed being extremely different, freaking peertube is like a p2p webrtc app lol mastodon could never be used for distributing videos like that
