I think we shouldn’t rush to defederate #Barcelona until we know more about their implementation, moderation policies or observe detrimental behaviour like them injecting ads.

You can argue EEE, but they have a proven track record when it comes to open source like React, PyTorch and many other projects!

@dansup This is what I thought. I won't take any action until I clearly understand their intentions.

Oh, they'll realize quickly that they can't fuck around with intentionally bad UX for free like they're accustomed to in their centralized products. The social graph not being hostage to them means they'll have to compete with other fediverse software on their own merits. A lot of eye opening is going to happen among Facebook/Meta managers soon. It's gonna be fun to watch 🍿

Adam Dalliance

@dansup yes, we should learn about their implementation, moderation policies etc and THEN rush to block them.

Gotta do it in the right order.

Erlend Sogge Heggen

@dansup before they inevitably try to EEE our network (whether intentionally or just by nature of their size and cultural programming), we can EEE them instead!

@erlend @dansup Beware the open source distraction: publishing the building blocks of one's walled garden is orthogonal to interoperating or playing nicely. It's Not About The Code.

@dansup sounds weird to talk about open source deeds given that they've received a billion euros fine in EU due to privacy violations (transferring data of EU users to US) just recently

dansup

@brawaru Great point, I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, all we can do is wait and see

@dansup Meta is a public company. That means it has shareholders. It has a fiduciary duty to those shareholders to maximize profit.

The fediverse as it exists is one of if not the greatest threat to traditional centralized social media. That is a problem for a company that owns a few centralized platforms. Simply, Meta is not going to support it out of the goodness of their hearts. They are the biggest player in the field, and they intend to keep it that way.

Григорий Клюшников

Tobias, there's a good chance they don't realize what they're getting into. When they do eventually come to that realization, it might be too late.

It's also worth noting that, at least according to my own understanding, there's no way to enforce that fiduciary duty. Meta is set up such that Zuckerberg can't be fired against his will no matter how badly shareholders want him gone.

Tobias SN

@grishka @dansup They know what they're doing, and it will go in one of two directions. Either they succeed, or they fail, in which case they shut it down before it causes them any harm. You don't become the biggest social media platform in the world by accident.

Fiduciary duty is not a matter of employment, it is a matter of law. In Florida, where Meta is incorporated to my knowledge, executives and board members have a fiduciary duty.

It seems to me that, maybe, the optimal strategy is to create a new instance that will federate with fb, so we can counter their flood of ads with a flood of messages back into fb about how much better it is here?

This would allow users to keep fb from data mining them by isolating, yet we can still recruit people away from that toxic cesspit.

Григорий Клюшников

Jeramee, privacy settings need to become a standard feature for ActivityPub servers. Can't spam you if you only allow PMs from people you follow.

Jeramee

@grishka @dansup
Fb can't speak if it's defederated either. The problem is that keeps fb users trapped in their bubble, which brings about the suggestion for an instance dedicated to going into fb to point out how bad it is same pulling people out.

@dansup there's an enormous difference: React, PyTorch etc were not cornerstones of their core business, social networking is. Somebody else using React or PyTorch isn't a threat to Facebook, the Fediverse expanding outside of their influence is a direct threat to their business model.

FeralRobots

@dansup I'm not sure what their f/oss record has to do w/anything. It's all going to be about their behavior, the culture - hell I'll presume they won't inject ads in feeds.

& I would argue the prudent thing for small-instance admins to do is domain-block pre-emptively.

Here's why: We know what Facebook culture is like. We know where Barcelona users will be coming from. Blocking THE domain IS REVERSABLE once they've demonstrated the culture behaves in a way that doesn't harm small instances.

FeralRobots

@dansup
"Defederate" gets thrown around & I don't think we should do that. What I'm talking about is a selective, conscious decision on the part of instance admins to block Barcelona's domain. Do it, or don't - but don't condemn people for admitting they see a risk.

For folks who want to make an analogy to blocking GROUPS OF PEOPLE, this is about behavior. Again, we know what Facebook culture's like. If we see Barcelona culture's not like that, & their users request it, admins can unblock.

@dansup “maybe the sociopathic billionaire will be different this time” ok champ

@dansup Honestly, I thought this thread about defederating Barcelona was political programmer humour relating to Catalonia's secession/independence (where Barcelona is the largest city) from Spain.

@ChrisBull
Here's hoping Meta's Barcelona will be separate;)
@dansup
wakest ⁂

@eternaltyro @dansup the code for what Meta/facebook is now calling Threads (a supposedly fediverse enabled microblogging app that uses the userdata from instagram)

eternaltyro

@liaizon @dansup ah interesting, thanks. I looked it up. Interesting!

Anthony Bosio

@dansup That seems best/most pragmatic, but they also have a proven track record of doing detrimental behavior then asking for forgiveness. It’s basically their entire m.o.
