I'm going to be really blunt here: if you don't care about trans people, if you even remotely think there's the slightest hint of merit to the blatant genocidal actions that are going on in the US right now, you can fuck right off from my projects, spaces, and communities.

I don't give a fuck about "tech shouldn't be political" garbage takes. Tech is made by people and right-wing legislators in the US are trying to *kill* my colleagues right now. There is no tech without people.

@marcan cannot agree more.

Human rights are non-negotiable, not just in my eyes, but periodt. Human rights atrocities like what the right-wing is doing now must not be given a pass, no matter if that's in tech or not.

Being quiet and reserved about it isn't the way. Showing them their bullshit isn't welcome anywhere is required. I don't talk to a large portion of my family because of this.

@marcan OK sorry, what's happening. Somehow I might have missed something important

@marcan @zekiz Oh, this Iโ€™m aware of. I thought for a moment that this rant was caused by some Nazi infiltrating Asahi.

Hector Martin

@ankitpati @zekiz No, we've had a couple of those show up on IRC but they didn't last long. They usually out themselves pretty quick.

Gabriel Adrian Samfira

@marcan @zekiz Getting "Handmaid's tale" vibes. What that site describes sounds dystopian.

Ankit Pati

@zekiz @marcan Yes, right. I missed the context, too. Whoโ€™s the most recent Nazi?

Those people claiming xxx (their profession) shouldn't be political are literally saying they don't give a damn about the situation minorities are in, are lacking empathy, and are feeling good about it.

Thank you for speaking up.

Hector Martin

Just to pre-empt: I will not be taking attempts at arguing against my point here. You will be instantly blocked and reported. Human rights are not up for debate.

Hector Martin

And if you agree with me and you are a US citizen or otherwise eligible to vote, FFS GO OUT AND VOTE.

I can't do much legislatively as a Spanish citizen living in Japan. All I can do from here is support my friends as best as I can. The only way this genocide is going to stop is if the people who can vote these people out do so.

@marcan People are people and should be allowed to people in peace.

Most of people claiming to be "neutral" or "apolitical" aren't, in fact, "neutral". They simply pretend to not see how f...ed up the current situation is.
Most active contributors to *certain project* are LGBT+ (myself included). Those "apolitical" people Instead of apologizing when they make a mistake (hey, we're all human after all), start crying how everything is "political" these days (boo hoo) if you call them out on their bullshit.
I usually give them a chance, but most often than not, I end up banning them from our discord server (where we exchange information and help troubleshoot issues). If they don't like it, they can GTFO.
Basic human rights are not up for a debate, so I'm happy that someone with so much influence in FOSS community talks openly about it. Thank you!

@marcan It's particularly weird to complain about politics in free software projects, when that philosophy is explicitly political...

@Npars01 @marcan these billionaires are simply trying to preserve hypercapitalism by destroying our atmosphere and our food for profits and using the funds to support a fascist political project to prevent the proletariat from waging class war.

Fascism requires compliance, MAGA worshipping seems a start. Apathy and ignorance are part of the wholesale disregard for the world and society.

Nicole Parsons

@Piousunyn @jacobrogers256 @marcan

Fascism requires societal norms that promote:
1. Short term thinking
2. Information bubbles
3. Big Lie propaganda
4. Selfishness
5. Disregard for the common good
6. Privatization of public assets like enclosure acts, public lands, national resources
7. High cost of living so people are too busy surviving to get involved in public policy or voting
8. Sociopathy & anti-social conduct
9. Scapegoating a minority
10. Eroded institutions like education

@jacobrogers256 @Piousunyn @marcan

The last time the rich had accumulated this much wealth, it took two world wars to wrest control from Gilded Age robber barons & their allies in a fading aristocracy.

The globe couldn't withstand a nuclear version of that past solution.

Reforms are still possible if people vote for the right candidates. Vet thoroughly before supporting anyone.

There's a lot of shams like Kyrsten Sinema and Tricia Cotham.

Vetting politicians is almost an impossible task. Santos for example part of the whole Republican iceberg, Sinema and Manchin tips of the Democrat Party. Iceberg?

Damn, apathy must be pleasant

Sorry, I refuse to pay for NYT anything, amusing when I can read Fox for free?

Nicole Parsons

@Piousunyn @jacobrogers256 @marcan

Get a public library card.

Most paywalled material is available for free via your public library.

Mine uses PressReader to view NYT.

Now you know why Republicans and Tories defund public libraries.

Systems of exploitation require information asymmetry. ie where the rich know and no one else does. Information is deliberately withheld to strengthen the 1%.

Know the enemy.

Piousunyn

@Npars01 @jacobrogers256 @marcan

Will check it out, thanks again. Have not been to the library in years.

Nicole Parsons

@Piousunyn @jacobrogers256 @marcan

Don't need to go to a library in person. Usually.

You can obtain a library card by phone, internet, job, or school.

Over the years, the above list has been promted

@jacobrogers256
Good job. I think you have covered it. The greed of the .01% will kill the remaining 99.99% of the world population

Piousunyn

@Npars01 @marcan

The fact Congress persons become millionaires after a few terms should be seen as a red light in the US. Citizens United needs to end.

Fascist Globalism needs address also, how does one address ludicrous inequalitys of wealth world wide ?

Nicole Parsons

@Piousunyn @marcan

How:
1. International tax treaties
2. End tax havens
3. Financial services regulation
4. Anti-trust law
5. Estate taxes on inherited wealth
7. Tax reform. Dividends taxed the same as employment income.
8. End Citizens United
9. Enact Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse's DISCLOSE Act
10. Enact Tom Malinowski's anti-corruption & money laundering laws
11. End stock buybacks
12. Don't buy from their companies. Or buy less from their companies.
Hobby Lobby. ExxonMobil. Home Depot. Uline.

Piousunyn

@Npars01 @marcan

Thank you for the comprehensive list of what needs addressing to end corruption of bribes and graft in the US, probably in other countries also.

Will keep ๐Ÿ’ฏ this list.

@marcan the whole problem is that we segregate people according to color, race, religion, gender etc instead of including everybody.

I saw the absolute best bit of inclusion years ago when I was in Salamanca. I saw a group young men out and having a good time. One was in a wheelchair and they took turns to push.

I see no reason for any segregation. I don't care who you love or what you wear or how you would like to be considered. I just see you as a person. All that matters to me is that you're a good person. I don't care about anything else. You can be rich, poor, gay, straight, religious, not religious, transgender, transvestite, black, green, yellow, pink, Orange or anything else. All I see is you.

"tech shouldn't be political"

Just to let you know, this has always been one of my major problems with KDE: countless times I've been asked not to talk about "politics".

Hector Martin

@alexl I'd need more context to form an opinion there. There's a difference between largely keeping project spaces about technical stuff and using that as an excuse to shut down grievances.

For example, you will find very little "political" talk in Asahi project spaces directly, but we keep things clean of abuse, thinly veiled dog whistles are not tolerated, we have a code of conduct, etc.

Arena Cops ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆโœŒ

@marcan They don't deserve to be (called) legislators โ€” they're evil opportunists committed to score points by targeting & stigmatizing minorities, & inciting antipathy against.

Ironically, the so-called "GOP" is itself a minority within the U.S., pretending to be a majority in some places by committing organized fraudulent voter suppression & gerrymandering & other methods of electoral fraud.

@marcan to say nothing of the significant contributions trans folk have made to tech. Without queer folks, normies wouldn't even have computers.
