@rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @Krita @GIMP Yeah, Scribus is dogshit for anything where you need actual decent typesetting.

@rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @Krita @GIMP I mean, FLOSS people would have to learn about things like metrical vs optical kerning, and widows and orphans, and in general accept that there's a lot more to typesetting than "put the text in the right box". And i don't actually have a ton of hope that any of that will happen anytime soon!

@adrienne eh, I understand where you're coming from, but I also feel that this "us-vs-them" dynamic that keeps popping up is just not helpful.

@rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @Krita @GIMP I mean, i'm a HUGE FLOSS booster in a whole lot of areas! I use a ton of FLOSS software! But i'm just not willing to paper over the extremely glaring shortcomings of the stuff people tout as "Adobe replacements".

@adrienne and nobody is asking you to.

The dynamic I mentioned is not about the willingness to paper over shortcomings, it's about the weird assumption that somehow "FLOSS people" and "creatives" (for want of better term) are two completely separate groups, almost warring tribes.

And my question is about how to change that. Because "FLOSS people" won't learn about all these things unless somebody is willing to help them learn.

@adrienne I am also not saying *you personally* should do this work — and it is work!

But this dynamic is what needs to change before we can have real hope these FLOSS alternatives become actually useful for professionals.

So this work needs to be done by *someone*, or people will remain in Adobe's clutches, forever complaining about Adobe's bullshit but never able to leave it behind.

@rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @Krita @GIMP I mean, the fact is, Adobe are scumbags, but Adobe software remains world-class, and a lot of us who need it in our workflow can't deal with half-assed replacements until they become full-assed. 😂 (If you're doing anything with non-RGB colorspaces, GIMP doesn't work either, for instance. GIMP says "CIELAB? What's that?")

@adrienne @rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @Krita @GIMP HEY! I for one strive to learn concepts like these to implement them correctly! These things are important afterall!

And I can name other FOSS projects who care about excelling at text rendering.

@adrienne @rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @krita @GIMP I get the frustration, but claiming that FLOSS people don't understand typesetting when there's entire professional communities typesetting their publications in LaTeX all by themselves as a matter of course, it will earn you a lot of headshaking and not much more.

@sqrt2 @rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @Krita @GIMP LaTeX (which i also use sometimes!) does some typesetting tasks really well, and others really badly. And it certainly isn't a poster child for "good UX"!

ben

@adrienne @rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @krita @GIMP I claim that it has better UX for typesetting mathematics than literally everything else out there. That may mainly say something about everything else out there, but such is the world.

just adrienne

@sqrt2 @rysiek @nombreapellido @inkscape @Krita @GIMP If we are restricting the domain to "typesetting mathematics", yes, I will happily agree with you. Unfortunately, 99.9% of what needs to be typeset in the world is "not mathematics".
