Last year we announced we would be joining Mastodon to explore an alternative to today's social media.

We’re excited to announce we’re expanding Mozilla.social to a private beta, with hopes to open to the public soon.

This is just the beginning. Read more about the launch of our instance, including how to join the public waitlist. blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/mo

@mozilla I see that a AAAA record has now been added for mozilla.social, very nice.
Hopefully the static & assets etc. will also gain #IPv6 in due course.

Benjamin

@mozilla It better be Firefox themed. I'm over posting 'posts' I want to spit fire.

Albrecht

@mozilla Please fix your setup first. No #IPv6 in 2023?

@mozilla

Incredibly important work, very glad to see that you're beginning to push into the space. Very hopeful that after you get your footing on social, you will begin investigating other federated ecosystems such as #PeerTube for video, #Pixelfed for images, etc.

Keep up the good work!

@mozilla

One piece of feedback: On your blog there are buttons to share to twitter and save to Pocket, but no share on Mastodon button 😉

Bjössi

@iyashikei_kris @mozilla Or maybe even a "Share to Fediverse" button?

My understanding is that the reason Bluesky and its walled garden is going viral is because the misconception that Mastodon "is the Fediverse". We need to spread the knowledge that if you are unhappy with the Mastodon interface or features, there are other platforms out there that share the same protocol.

@mozilla Why would someone join a waitlist for a fedi instance?

@mozilla @Gargron

They SO should do invite only codes for the private beta!

geekynerdynerd

@mozilla Nice to see Mozilla join the fediverse. I am a bit concerned about what "if it's debatable it's gone" means

Does it mean that debate is forbidden or that anything in the grey area of the other rules is forbidden?

If it's the former, that is kinda killing the social part of social media.
With the latter there is a risk of conflict with other rules. See: HAES movement denials of health impacts of obesity and their claims of "fatphobic oppression" when said impacts are acknowledged.

geekynerdynerd

@mozilla I will definitely be watching with interest though. Hopefully it works out. We could definitely do with more platforms that are safer for people of different backgrounds, I just am a bit concerned that Mozilla might not have considered the possibility that these rules aren't always gonna be mutually compatible in the eyes of people from different walks of life.

Dylan Shivak

@geekynerdynerd I think we can just err on the side of you don’t need to “debate” people about obesity on this instance.

geekynerdynerd

@dylanshivak So Mozilla will just tolerate medical misinformation then? I can't see how that will end well. Like I said, these rules are clearly not well thought out because they are contradictory. The people I am referring to see even acknowledging the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes as a form of hate speech and harassment.

The only way to avoid rule conflicts would be to outright ban all discussion on medical issues regardless of content. I don't see that ending well.

geekynerdynerd

@dylanshivak the scare quotes were unnecessary. I am not in favor of harassment and bullying of anybody. I'm just concerned as to if Mozilla has really thought about how this will work. Banning harassment is definitely a good thing. I'm just concerned that legitimate debate is also gonna be forbidden. I'd hate to see a growth in platforms where the only opinion that is tolerated is "Yes I agree. Oh absolutely." and no real discussion can take place.

Dylan Shivak

@geekynerdynerd I just don’t understand (why) it’s necessary to debate topics like this? It doesn’t sound like this is meant to be the be-all and end-all of social media, but a tolerant space that has heavy moderation. A few topics might be off limits here - so what?

Just live and let live (ie. mind your own business).

geekynerdynerd

@dylanshivak Honestly, if this was being made by anybody other than Mozilla i'd simply ignore it . But Mozilla has influence. Outside of platforms that are committing seppeku like Twitter, heavy moderation has been spreading like wildfire... The internet as a whole is becoming more split between places trying to replicate Disney land and shit holes like 4chan.

I don't like either option, and I'm concerned about this dichotomy potentially spreading if more groups are inspired by Mozilla.

Dylan Shivak

@geekynerdynerd I guess we just agree to disagree. I think a heavily moderated space sounds nice and somewhere that I would like to be. It’s certainly the reason I left Twitter.

Not everywhere can be everything for everyone, and that’s okay.

geekynerdynerd

@dylanshivak I'll admit I'm just a bit sensitive about the topic currently. I left Twitter because of numerous reasons, but I will agree that after Musk took over they went too far in taking a more anything goes approach to moderation.

There's certainly nothing wrong with there being places that are heavily moderated and I am glad that people like you who prefer those have options. I just prefer a middle ground to moderation, and it feels like places like that are dying out slowly everywhere.

Fahri Reza

@mozilla do you offer different features? I think there are instances that offers quote tooting or longer text.

Thomas Schäfer

@mozilla
Your blog has no IPv6 address, your mastodon instance has no IPv6 address.
I thought you know what internet is.

@tschaefer

@mozilla **Chanting** "And we're singing bye, bye folks of RIPE 55, ..."

MyOpinion

@mozilla So great to see this happen. In this verse great companies will work together to create something even better.

David - Forking Mad

@mozilla you've got to wonder why it takes so long. And a private beta? What are they doing with it!

Sco :progress: :flag_mm:

@mozilla i'm curious in the further information what you mean by monitization.

Paul

@mozilla I'm happy that about once in a year, out of dozens of things, you still also occasionally do something good.

Paul

@mozilla I want you guys to succeed. I also think that large, general purpose fediverse instances are the ideal way forward for 90% of users.
So I'm very happy about this!

Paul

Applied to mozilla.social with a weird feeling. I think I'd move my main account there, given that the instance is run somewhat decoupled from the main Mozilla entity (I have my doubts about their continued existence).

I hope they tolerate fair, if cynical, criticism. Because I have a lot of that, coming from a place of love.

Andre_601 :blobfoxcofe:

@mozilla Mind adding dark theme to your instance? Kinda hurts my eyes seeing it in bright theme (Not sure if Mastodon does have a preference-based theme select option)

Starraven

@mozilla
Sticking with regular Mastodon, thanks.

Scott Matter

@mozilla cool!

Side question: when is Mozilla VPN going to be available in Australia. I get excited every time I update Firefox, only to be disappointed it’s still not here.

Dawid Rejowski

@mozilla

No IPv6 **and** hosted on Google Cloud? Really?

Evan Prodromou

@mozilla this is great news! Thanks for doing this hard work.

Sam Guckenheimer

@mozilla @stevetex for those of us already on Mastodon, is there any reason to switch to Mozilla.social?

Steve Teixeira

@Sam @mozilla Howdy, Sam! If you're happy with your current instance, then there's no need to change. In the coming months, we'll add features that may be different than core Mastodon, but for now the differentiation isn't huge.

Sean Murthy

@mozilla Joined the waiting list. Eager to see how this shapes up.

Also curious what exact forms and means of "monetization" you'll pursue.

"Many other areas of the experience are ripe for experimentation – onboarding, discovery, identity, monetization just to name a few"

Matthew Merkovich :clippy:

@mozilla if I were to join, could I openly mock and ridicule the wealthy?

DELETED

@mozilla just take the full plunge! Why a beta???

Excellent point made by @chema
"Mozilla's apparent decision to consider outsourcing content moderation for their Mastodon instance is particularly frustrating. Mozilla is a nonprofit. It had $75 million dollars in assets in 2021. Its headquarters are based in San Francisco, a city that has seen poverty explode in the past few years. Mozilla.social is an opportunity for Mozilla to hire in-house content moderators and provide them with their famous world-class benefits package that includes the necessary health care and support that these content moderators will almost certainly require as they care for their instance's users while developing its home city's workforce."

@mozilla Welcome to Fediverse。I love Firefox。

Тимур Сагденов

@mozilla@mozilla.social
So much negative feedback. I hope this account will help you to get more feedback about Firefox and fix all the problems efficiently and faster.
Also, you have joined not only Mastodon, but the whole Fediverse. There are also other ActivityPub-compatible social media software: Pleroma, Misskey, Pixelfed, PeerTube, etc.

Rusty

@mozilla
Welcome to the fediverse! Please “verify” yourself by adding a link to your homepage and the reverse link(a rel tag or something). Hope you have a good time

adradia 💅

@mozilla Hi there!

I see y'all launched without server rules. That's probably not a good idea since you are letting anyone join.

Ahri Boy (archived)

@mozilla@mozilla.social Mozilla should lead the development of Mastodon software someday

Ω 🌍 Gus Posey

@mozilla That's exciting. Thanks for adding your energy to this remarkable mixture.

New Day Media

@mozilla hello are you part of tech support? the past few days no uploaded jpg/gif/mp4 will post the "privacy policy" hyperlink keeps blocking the "publish" button

@mozilla

?? A friend downloaded mozilla mobile tried to register for social but never works their registering . He can see all pages & profiles of others but cant log in . Any reason ? Thanks

Cyastis

@mozilla This is great news - I'm excited to see Mozilla try out something unique in the fediverse

GeneBean

@mozilla I’m pretty excited to see where this (and the instance by @Vivaldi) go popularity wise. I think browser makers are particularly well positioned to spread the word about the awesomeness of the #fediverse

Emelia 👸🏻

@mozilla is Mozilla going to be hiring or funding Mastodon & other fediverse server/software development?

(Asking because I'm available for hire)

Vincent Tunru

@thisismissem @mozilla I've only seen a listing for Director of Product: mozilla.org/en-US/careers/posi

It seems like engineers are sourced internally at the moment: mozilla.social/@amri/110470079

But keep an eye on the careers site I suppose. And let me know if something shows up and you need a referral 🙂

Emelia 👸🏻

@VincentTunru @mozilla will do! Would be good to have funding to work on social web platforms part-time to improve them, interoperability & moderation.

Vincent Tunru

@thisismissem Yes! Although unfortunately, Mozilla is weirdly iffy about part-time 😞

Technique777

@mozilla looks cool. Hopefully will attract some users
