I’ve read this article several times and still don’t know how Mastodon can help merchants because the author never answers the question.

But this yet another Mastodon explainer and one that has been written ad infinitum since last November.

I disagree with a few assumptions, primarily that picking a server is “too hard”. But it’s an okay explainer, not great.

I’d still like to know if Mastodon can help merchants, though.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews It can. It does. A whole world of possibilities has opened up to me. It has changed my whole business outlook, and I can stop wasting so much precious time chasing algorithms. I am exponentially less invisible in the Fediverse. I've noticed the same for others. @skaly want to weigh in on this?

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Just what I always wanted! Someone vaguely familiar with a subject to explain it to me with authority! Yaaaay!

@atomicpoet I miss being able to follow and brand (let’s say Nintendo) or an online store (let’s say Gundam Planet) here. I want news and info for something I already know I’m interested in. I want someone actively being on the other side and engaging.

Ads, bots, and other one ways don’t interest me.

So there’s at least one underserved person on Mastodon.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews it doesn't help my business much if at all, however I am not a social media pro so don't really use it to promote the business fully/enough. My business is also on an instance that doesn't allow public advertising with your typical ads, and I am 💯 OK with that. As a user I dislike advertising from businesses, but happy to see and support self promotion. So I focus my business posts on behind the scenes stuff that are not direct adverts.

The Fediverse can help merchants by creating a sales site/mall and payment portal that is not and will not be enshittified.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews Signing up could be a lot easier for non-technical people by never mentioning servers except in advanced options. Instead I’d give them options for joining a community where one option is to select on nearby. A diner in my neighborhood is now closing down after losses since 2020. I’m on a local server and wish they had a way to reach me and boost their business to users on the local server. Instead of ads I’d encourage small businesses to mention them in posts as appropriate. A local dog shop set up a space which is ideal for taking photos with dogs. It has their name in neon lights above. That’s what others should do.
