@caseynewton I understand the people who feel they need to post there for work and stuff. And I *kinda* understand people who are just lazy and feel like getting set up here is too much work. But... uh... yeah. Don't understand the people who insist nothing has changed and just keep keeping on.

In my non-profit workspaces, they've spent a lot of time thinking how to promote ourselves as an organisation and unfortunately because people are still on Twitter the move to spaces like this seems extra work that we can't afford because its returns aren't valuable enough.

Developing a following and curating a community takes a long time and energy.

@caseynewton yeah. It’s frustrating how many of the Twitter communities I enjoyed being part of just will not even consider moving. They somehow just manage to ignore the Elon drama and pretend nothing’s different.

@caseynewton it really is too much to ask some people not to go to a Nazi bar just to be seen, even a tiny little gesture like that is too much for them. 🤷‍♂️

@caseynewton if media can’t call a site a propaganda tool and stop feeding it - it will have power. But given the LIMP coverage of Fox’s ongoing dumpster fire (“oh, we can’t call it right wing propaganda - that would be CONFRONTATIONAL and we have to be “even” - even though the evidence IS..”) … I’m not holding my breath on media having learned anything.

@caseynewton I wonder if Musk is going to kill his golden goose by breaking recommendations. That is to the extent that there even is a golden goose at this point.

Without recommendations of random users Twitter is useless because journalists need random people to see their tweets and the only opportunity for serendipity Twitter ever had was through random recommendations.

@caseynewton I often wonder too why people put so much effort into posting there. Twitter's usage stats aren't great last time I checked, haven't been great ever but it seems to be the centre of many people's worlds. Like this isn't to say don't enjoy social media that isn't gigantic but I feel it's worth bearing in mind, there's more to life than an ultimately small social media platform.

@caseynewton it’s those that think staying on Twitter is somehow a protest. It’s like riding the back of the bus saying you support Rosa parks. Upholding the status quo is not a sign of protest.

@caseynewton @tchambers It’s so discouraging. Our one local journalist that created a Mastodon account lasted about three days here. Seems like my other Birdchan peeps that came over here have mostly given up, too.

It is now a cesspool of disinformation and bigotry, and that gets a helping hand from Musk.

Journos have nowhere else to go. Content producers cannot make that kind of money elsewhere, so many don't mind paying $8 a month.

Advertisers will soon return. 3-4 months, tops.
