Every day is like "starting tomorrow only people who post ‘Elon is cool' will be eligible to have their tweets appear in English" and the entire press corps and all of my friends continue to post there like nothing has changed

@caseynewton Honestly I'm expecting him to soon charge for the ability to not follow him.

@sarahhbickerton @caseynewton If had charged for the ability to troll himself, they’d be a profitable company lining up bankers to IPO, again

Locksmith

@paninid @sarahhbickerton @caseynewton And they still thank him for all the good things he is doing to make the world a better place.

@locksmithprime @sarahhbickerton @caseynewton I listened to a 3-hour Twitter Spaces sometime in early Dec ‘22 hosted by a bunch of sycophants. My takeaway: the fanbois have a deep, internalized dislike for themselves, and it manifests in their worldview, idols, and rhetoric.

@caseynewton I understand the people who feel they need to post there for work and stuff. And I *kinda* understand people who are just lazy and feel like getting set up here is too much work. But... uh... yeah. Don't understand the people who insist nothing has changed and just keep keeping on.

@caseynewton i keep telling people that on twitter, and they keep telling me to shut up.

Half Cocked Law

@mmasnick @caseynewton I'd be OK with those people staying on Twitter. The lack of vitriol here has done wonders for my stress levels.

Fisher

@halfcocked @mmasnick @caseynewton I am now finding my old Twitter stress nausea on Nextdoor. It’s not **that** hard to sign up on Mastodon, but I’m not telling my neighbors

Jeroen Baert

@mmasnick @caseynewton I just read someone commenting on the birdsite that "no other network" has a tab like "following" and I just wanted to ... grrr

John Gordon

@mmasnick @caseynewton They are committed now. So don’t waste your time.

Oblomov

@mmasnick @caseynewton I mean, it's quite obvious we can't. These last 3 years have been extremely telling in this regard.

@mmasnick @caseynewton
I'm starting to work on getting local Indivisible groups in PA to create Mastodon accounts and ask their Party and elected officials to do the same.

If we can get activists and electeds to use Mastodon, we will make it much easier for journalists to move as well.

There are seemingly legitimate reasons to stay on Twitter, until there are not.

@caseynewton @mmasnick I'm not sure if a society that accepts regular mass murders of children in exchange for gun mfr profits can do better

Chris Pirillo

@mmasnick @caseynewton ...there hasn't been a culture shift. Hasn't impacted their day-to-day. They won't see a difference or care enough even if minor changes take hold. It's the whole boiling frog metaphor.

@mmasnick There's a middle position that I'm in. I mostly follow and rarely post on social platforms. So if journalists, comedians, etc are still over there, then what I'm left with is a fairly barren Masto timeline. I'd love to switch, but I'm the audience rather than the performer.

Sadly, we can't force people to leave an abusive relationship.
They must exercise their own free will to break free of the Cordyceps birdshiteota.

@mmasnick @caseynewton it’s a pain in the ass as a tech person because so many other tech people are still there and it serves a useful network purpose

but it is getting worse every day

@caseynewton considering I only ever open "for you" tab because of the dark patterns in the twitter mobile app... I really don't care if he makes it useless

(pressing home when you're at the top of the timeline opens "for you" after a recent update)

@caseynewton I think people don't feel able to move?

In my non-profit workspaces, they've spent a lot of time thinking how to promote ourselves as an organisation and unfortunately because people are still on Twitter the move to spaces like this seems extra work that we can't afford because its returns aren't valuable enough.

Developing a following and curating a community takes a long time and energy.

J Miller

@acaciathorns @caseynewton Encourage them to look at engagement, and real/relevant active followers, not just follower counts. Those follower counts have a lot of inertia.

Beth

@JMMaok @acaciathorns @caseynewton

The Texas Observer situation today should be considered by organizations. They have done an amazing job growing a community here on Mastodon, and while the organization may not be able to convince their Board to reconsider the decision to shut down the magazine, they have fund raised over 100K today. The engagement on Mastodon has been incredible.

@TexasObserver

Eric Jennings

@caseynewton yeah. It’s frustrating how many of the Twitter communities I enjoyed being part of just will not even consider moving. They somehow just manage to ignore the Elon drama and pretend nothing’s different.

Lazarou Monkey Terror 🚀💙🌈

@caseynewton it really is too much to ask some people not to go to a Nazi bar just to be seen, even a tiny little gesture like that is too much for them. 🤷‍♂️

Eddie the Bulldog

@caseynewton if media can’t call a site a propaganda tool and stop feeding it - it will have power. But given the LIMP coverage of Fox’s ongoing dumpster fire (“oh, we can’t call it right wing propaganda - that would be CONFRONTATIONAL and we have to be “even” - even though the evidence IS..”) … I’m not holding my breath on media having learned anything.
“But I have so many followers here In Goebbels marketplace!”

@caseynewton I wonder if Musk is going to kill his golden goose by breaking recommendations. That is to the extent that there even is a golden goose at this point.

Without recommendations of random users Twitter is useless because journalists need random people to see their tweets and the only opportunity for serendipity Twitter ever had was through random recommendations.

SHODAN :nonbinary:

@caseynewton I often wonder too why people put so much effort into posting there. Twitter's usage stats aren't great last time I checked, haven't been great ever but it seems to be the centre of many people's worlds. Like this isn't to say don't enjoy social media that isn't gigantic but I feel it's worth bearing in mind, there's more to life than an ultimately small social media platform.

DjDedan

@caseynewton it’s those that think staying on Twitter is somehow a protest. It’s like riding the back of the bus saying you support Rosa parks. Upholding the status quo is not a sign of protest.

Rhombus Ticks

@DjDedan @caseynewton More like riding in the limousine behind the bus leaning out the window eating bonbons going "Go Rosie!"

Rhombus Ticks

@caseynewton I am sorry.

Anyone still on twitter isnt a journalist to me.

IdahoLark

@caseynewton @tchambers It’s so discouraging. Our one local journalist that created a Mastodon account lasted about three days here. Seems like my other Birdchan peeps that came over here have mostly given up, too.

Isaac

@caseynewton If we were friends I could say "Not all your friends" :P

Sad Ginger

@caseynewton it’s truly bizarre. Like living in an alternate reality

Staid Winnow

@caseynewton The reality is it remains the premier microblogging platform and has no real competition.

It is now a cesspool of disinformation and bigotry, and that gets a helping hand from Musk.

Journos have nowhere else to go. Content producers cannot make that kind of money elsewhere, so many don't mind paying $8 a month.

Advertisers will soon return. 3-4 months, tops.
