How is this different from Digital Ocean 1-click install? Digital Ocean is for self-managed hosting, #SpaceHost is for fully-managed hosting. 2. How is this different from @mastohost? There's many differences, but the biggest one is that @mastohost focuses on Mastodon, and we do not! 3. Will you allow me to install my favourite service? We're considering every kind of *mature* Fediverse service, and we want to be the one stop shop for instances! Why are @reiver and I building #SpaceHost? Because we looked at the Fediverse's biggest needs right now, and we both agree that there's a HUGE need for more instances. And not just Mastodon instances. Every kind of instance! But there's a big barrier to entry: most people have neither time nor expertise to self-host an instance. So we want to make running an instance incredibly easy by doing the heavy lifting for you! A couple of days ago, I asked @gruber if he'd pay for fully managed hosting. He said, "Of course I would." It looks like a lot of people agree with him. Just as people pay for email and web hosting, there's a demand for Fediverse hosting. This is why we're building #SpaceHost. Also, #SpaceHost wants to help devs build the Fediverse! So when you host with us, you'll also be funding Fediverse devs. That's right! #SpaceHost will be spreading the good will around! @atomicpoet @reiver @atomicpoet @reiver I would absolutely be okay with a "we'll set it up including scheduled backups, then grant you root access, and you're on your own from there" arrangement. Especially if it includes scaling options like splitting the front-end and redis+postgres into different VMs. In that scenario the only support I would expect is service-level issues, not software support. @atomicpoet @reiver my pleasure! I love startup culture so I'm rooting for you! Competition is good for everyone :HoloParty:β @atomicpoet @reiver oh and you could absolutely monetize software support for that at a higher price point than normal, kinda like Enterprise Ubuntu or RedHat. If we grow big enough I would totally pay that premium haha  @atomicpoet @reiver if you also somehow can become a registrar, setting up instances can be done in literally one click.

Been wanting to do that but finding the time .. rather spin one up and get to learning how to work with AP!  That's awesome! Can a billionaire buy your current instance and shut it down? Maybe More instances = more democracy @atomicpoet @reiver While I'm super thrilled with masto.host, I think it's great for there to be more than 3 options for how to run an instance. One thing I'd love to see is a middle ground between fully-managed hosting and DIY. For example, with masto.host, I have no control over the software version, and can't make any modifications or change environment settings. That's the only reason I've even considered installing it myself. Managed hosting with more control would be amazing. @atomicpoet I love that Lemmy is being supported right away!
