his wife has filled his house with chintz

sharp-tender-shock-deactivated: [screenshot of a comment]

His wife has filled his house with chintz. To keep it real | fuck him on the floor.

This is a comment someone appended to a photo of two men apparently having sex in a very fancy room, but it's also kind of an amazing two-line ‘poem? “His Wife has filled his house with chintz” is a really elegant and beautiful counterbalancing of h, f, and s sounds, and “chintz” is a perfect word choice here—sonically pleasing and good at evoking nouveau riche tackiness. /And then “to keep it real | fuck him on the floor” collapses that whole mood with short percussive sounds—but it's still a perfect iambic pentameter line, robust and a lovely obscene contrast with the chintz in the first line. Well done, tumblr user jibang8

without the help of extreme bigotry

vintageadvertising: Photo of an old newspaper advert. A black-and-white photo of the World Trade Center with "When the fire alarm went off it took two hours to evacuate New York's World Trade Centre. Beneath, text reads" The bigger the building, the more important fire-proofing That's why today's buildings have asbestos-cement walls and even floors containing asbestos Asbestos contains fire, cannot burn and holds up after metal and glass have melted down, giving vital time for people to escape heating pipes, electric motors and Asbestos We couldn’t live the way we do without it When life depends on it, you use asbestos.

mystery algae (if anyone knows what this is, it remains unidentified, and you can make OP very happy by solving this!)

neat-deadandive-things: (series of screenshots with captions)
Found some algae today in an old broken growth chamber
Labels are faded and nobody recognises the species
All we know is that it's producing spores
Am I in the beginning of a horror movie?
Not even 100% sure it's algae
Oh this is for sure going to kill me
The photos are first of jars, then a close-up of unlabelled jars of a yellowish liquid, then close-ups of reddish spores.
neat-deadandiive-things: I had some other work to do this morning (Figuring out some algae stuff involving 1000 L mesocosm up a mountain) so mystery species has been sitting alone in the lab all morning.....
neat-deadandiive-things Made it up to the lab today to find this. It's probably from the fridge defrosting and not the creepy “algae”
Photo of a laboratory with rows of jars and a large puddle on the floor
neat-deadandiive-things: June 13th Update. According to a few colleagues it's either a plant, an algae, or a fungi. So that's been helpful. After a day with some sunlight I think I might be seeing some chioroplasts. (microscope image of the possible algae)
Photo of flasks containing a yellowish liquid with something brownish clearly growing in it
It seems to like the nutrient solution | added yesterday though!
lynati: I for one welcome our new plant, algae, or fungi overlords.
derinthemadscientist: I was about o say “in a sensible lab people wouldn't waste time with this, they'd autoclave the bottles and move on* but on reflection | can't think of a single bio lab I've been in that wouldn’t immediately go “ooh, mystery algae, that sounds like a fun challenge; let’s devote multiple hours to identifying it for no reason’.
kit6: I need updates tell me about the algae
neat-deadandiive-things: The mystery algae/plant/fungi/alien is stuck in the university growth chamber. With everything going on | probably won't get to check in on it until September, possibly not until 2021
howieduet: So by that time it will have developed what, writing? deadandiivmnings: God | hope so, then | can train it to write my thesis!
alexaloraetheris:This entire post is the most on-brand biologist thing | have seen in my entire godforsaken life. The moment this pandemic is over these guys have another crisis ready for us. lucky-182: Can we get an update cause this is crazy E neat-deadandiive-things Update: Due to the global pandemic, the algae has been left alone in a weird hidden growth chamber for a year and will likely stay there for another year. Enjoy that information!
neat-deadandiive-things: Friday, August 13th, 2021: Yesterday | visited the algae. Today I am going to bring a preserved sample home. I'm going to be in the field for the next 2 or 3 weeks but soon after that | hope to once again try to ID it. Any botanists/mycologists who want to help out? I'm afraid if it's not algae my ID skills are very rusty. Here it is, in all it's glory, after 2 years in isolation.
Photo of the flask. Most of the yellowish liquid is gone now, and a thing with long "branches" is growing out of it

it is the 10th anniversary of this iconic post

reallyreallyreallytrying: “average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted
