it's much simpler. if there's no feed it's not a podcast. all that stuff is your spin. I understand and agree but why does this stuff matter? perhaps our failure to make these points is why these arguments never end. why we have to fight these battles over and over again. we don't educate the public about the importance of the structure or ways of building or consuming or distributing. it would be like having the structures of voting or markets or journalism without understanding what reasoning led us there. people would be vulnerable to every new charlatan. @wjmaggos @davew @jaredwhite Then, consumers can choose what they want. The current conflation of terms prevents user choice. you have to fight only because you want to and there are trolls who are willing to help you. I fight cause I care about the world and have a daughter and think everyone should have health care and think decentralized media/tech moves us closer to better outcomes that serve the general public than media run by big money that misinforms people through ads and algorithms and gatekeeping. maybe fight is the wrong word, but I make my case (while trying to avoid bad faith trolls etc). most people are just differently informed or coming from very different life experiences. @davew @jaredwhite @wjmaggos so, your definition (which I agree with) comes from “cast” in podcast. You “cast” it out on the net for people to listen to. I’d also like to posit that a show that is 6 hours long also is not a podcast. From the “pod” part of the name, it should be a collection of small, easily listened to shows, not a 6 hour lecture. @beowuff @davew @jaredwhite @wjmaggos no, the "pod" part of the name means you can play it on your iPod -- it's just a portmanteau from 200x of "ipod broadcast" sorry for "well actually"ing if you were kidding, but I think it's important not to revise history. especially when the main inventor of RSS is in the chat @beowuff @davew @jaredwhite @wjmaggos pretty sure pod comes from iPod there. *That* is a terminology issue that's long settled though @davew Thank you Dave! Certainly nothing on the level of you've had to deal with in the past, but yeah…as one of the few mediums left on the net which has managed to evade total monopolistic lockdown, I care very strongly about it. @jaredwhite @davew Completely agree but the ship sailed. Better to talk the benefits of *open* podcasts and the problems with *exclusive* podcasts. You have to meet people where they are if you actually want to change anyone's mind. Next up: is it really GNU/Linux? @tarczonator @davew Or…and just hear me out on this…we talk about the benefits of podcasts and the problems with exclusive audio shows on proprietary platforms. @jaredwhite I don't need to hear you out, I already agree with you! But with the average person I think it's harder to make the case when you need to convince them a podcast isn't what they think it is. @tarczonator Fair enough. I don't think what I'm trying to do is convince the average person what a podcast is. I'm trying to convince the industry / media that is just going along with a handful of corporations and their big money. Foolish? Perhaps, but that's no reason to stop trying! @jaredwhite Either way, maybe things will work themselves out. @davew @jaredwhite It's not a podcast if it doesn't come from the French region of Podcastère, where the river Heressesse flows, voyons. |
@davew @jaredwhite
it's not a podcast if it's not decentralized, if the creator and listener have to share a corporate overlord in addition to a format/technology?
