@truhe @ivory Tootbot is a much better name, as Ivory can have negative connotations…

@eobet @truhe @ivory negative connotations like diamonds, gold, and such?

Isn't that a little stretched?

Mr. Funk E. Dude

@liebero3 @eobet @truhe @ivory I was thinking more as in "Poaching". Not wealth.

I like "Tootbot" as well.

@liebero3 @eobet @truhe @ivory A big difference is that diamonds and gold aren’t obtained by effectively murdering an innocent animal.

Liebero

@NailClippings @truhe @eobet @ivory Right, but they are obtained by child labor including deaths

It is illegal to cross international borders carrying #ivory. I know people who have had antique musical instruments destroyed because of this

At minimum there would need to be a significant financial support and advocacy for #elephant and #rhino #conservation

Then the name might not encourage the illegal ivory trade by positive association

Otherwise you’re practically naming your app after Illegal #poaching

I’m a longtime #Tweetbot user, But not sure if I’d buy an app named #ivory without thinking about it

The opportunity for supporting campaigns against poaching would certainly help

@ivory I agree with the many people who've said that Ivory is a poorly chosen name. Tweetbot is great and I'd enjoy a Mastodon app from the same developers, but not one called Ivory.

Here's a couple of reasons why:

"25 March 2021 (IUCN) - Following population declines over several decades due to poaching for ivory and loss of habitat, the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is now listed as Critically Endangered and the African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™."
iucn.org/news/species/202103/a

"Each year, at least 20,000 African elephants are illegally killed for their tusks. A decade-long resurgence in demand for elephant ivory, particularly in parts of Asia, has fueled this rampant poaching epidemic."

20,000 #Elephants killed every year

By 2040 the #Elephant would be extinct because of #Ivory

It’s like naming a product #BloodDiamonds. Kind of cool maybe, but you are linking yourself to atrocity

Maybe an international campaign against your product will help create pressure for governments like mine to ban the trade:

#IvoryFreeCanada

But it’s not an app I could buy with that name
