Have you heard of Crossfire? It was this old CNN show that presented news through a spectrum of a left-right debate, except of course "left" meant "centrist" and "right" meant "Pat fucking Buchanan". Timothy Leary called it "the left wing of the CIA debating the right wing of the CIA". Anyway when you periodically see Jack Dorsey publicly disagreeing with Elon Musk about Twitter I feel like it's like that except instead of the CIA it's people who think there's an Ivermectin coverup

I wonder what the TikTok teenagers think about the Twitter blowup and this whole Mastodiaspora thing.

Dave MacFarlane

@mcc I would assume they don't

robinhouston

@mcc i asked the one sitting next to me, who said “Never heard of it. What is that?”

mcc

@robinhouston wait just double checking you did say Mastodon and not "Mastodiaspora" because that is a word I just made up

robinhouston

@mcc I just tried to clarify. “Mastodon? I'm vaguely aware of it, because you've talked at me about it. I don't really care, because Twitter's for old people. No – Twitter's for Millennials. It's for old people who don't think they're old.”

@robinhouston @mcc hey we know we're old. We just wish that there was a moment in time between having been treated like children and being treated like out-of-touch geriatrics. Just, like, one year being treated like a normal adult would've been nice but, alas.

@mausmalone @robinhouston @mcc I saw it pointed out somewhere that it's entirely possible that there will never be a Gen X president of the United States. We had Boomer presidents for 28 years and when that streak was finally broken it was because we elected someone *too old* to be a Boomer.

mcc

@CarlMuckenhoupt @mausmalone @robinhouston if elon musk does a coup does that count as "president" or is it something else at that point

glyph

@CarlMuckenhoupt @mausmalone @robinhouston @mcc we might get a Gen X president the same way we got our first (probably only) Silent president, Biden--when they're pretty old. (We can hope. If you're betting on one for 2024, it's probably DeSantis.)

@rabcyr @mcc Me too. We're so old we don't even think we're young any more

@robinhouston @mcc I guess Generation Yuzz thinks Generation Y is “old people who don’t think they’re old”

Sounds about right for what kids think of their parents

(… “Yuzz” is the letter that comes after Z in the extended alphabet of “On Beyond Zebra”; Gen Yuzz is also known as Gen Α, with a capital Greek letter alpha - α)

@robinhouston @mcc my teen and cousins noticed me scrolling on something and collectively said “twitter” then one said - “no that’s not twitter what is it?” (Mostly because I couldn’t get a word in edgewise) I didn’t say what it was to up the intrigue - so it’s only a matter of time now…

@mcc My tweens wouldn’t be caught dead on Twitter and they stare at me blankly when I mention Mastodon/Fediverse

@mcc The thirteen year old called Twitter “that crusty musty dusty site you old people use”. When I asked her where her and her friends get their news and she said “TikTok & YouTube”. I showed her Mastodon and she said “looks mid like Twitter. Is it just writing?”

@mcc about the same as us twitter folks felt about LJ being sold to a russian advertising concern

A small subset are aware of it but care not at all; the vast majority don't recognize anything important in the relevant messages

mcc

@eqe I freaked out about that, all my friends were using livejournal long before anyone cared about Twitter >_>

external quantum efficiency

@mcc I think you and I were fof or maybe even friends on LJ, but it's been yoinks
