@atomicpoet I sincerely hope that most new users will go on to form smaller servers with friends, family, community, etc., once they've figured out how things work. These large-scale instances are the biggest risk to the Fedi imo.

News media, nonprofits, and govt entities can help encourage this by starting their own instance - show people the possibilities.

Disagree with the general statement. As so often in life, it's about integrity. I run a server which currently hosts 35.000+ people. I won't ever sell. People should get into the habit of reading the About pages of their servers. That allows them to judge and project. Mine is at home.social/about.

@ralf @atomicpoet It's great that you run your server with integrity. My comment wasn't directed at you or any other specific server.

My comment was about the systemic dangers of the Fediverse existing primarily as a few large instances, which is not very different from the current social media model. Resiliency and sustainability need to be built from the ground up. Simply crossing our fingers and hoping for integrity doesn't seem like a very resilient model.
