 BIG NEWS: Pawoo.net, the world's 2nd biggest Mastodon instance, has just been acquired. The entity acquiring them is the Mask Group, an entity that also runs mstdn.jp and mastodon.cloud. They are also active in the so-called "Web 3.0" space. These large-scale instances are the biggest risk to the Fedi imo. News media, nonprofits, and govt entities can help encourage this by starting their own instance - show people the possibilities. Disagree with the general statement. As so often in life, it's about integrity. I run a server which currently hosts 35.000+ people. I won't ever sell. People should get into the habit of reading the About pages of their servers. That allows them to judge and project. My comment was about the systemic dangers of the Fediverse existing primarily as a few large instances, which is not very different from the current social media model. Resiliency and sustainability need to be built from the ground up. Simply crossing our fingers and hoping for integrity doesn't seem like a very resilient model.  @atomicpoet Thank you for the heads-up. Despite that this is bad news, hopefully the good news is, is that they will purge all lolicon and other virtual child porn from pawoo. Add to that the fact that almost all content is Japanese, the choice to defederate is pretty easy for most instance admins. @eirliani @atomicpoet pawoo is full of a lot of very interesting individuals.
follow @pawoo for more info @atomicpoet i originally joined mastodon.cloud back in ~2018, but in recent weeks the local tl became completely overrun with spammers posting offers to do fake product reviews on ebay etc. @atomicpoet I guess it was just a matter of time before something like this started happening. I wonder how that will turn out for them given that moving around in the fediverse without losing your network is much easier than with centralized networks like Twitter and the likes. @atomicpoet is there a comprehensive list of things to evaluate when choosing an instance. Besides hearing "trust me bro" from the admin? @atomicpoet they're investing a lot of $$ in acquiring Mastadon instances. How do they plan to monetize that investment? Are ads allowed? Can they sell data?  |
