Do you think you can easily summarize your server's rules in a flat list of bullet points?

That would make it simpler for mobile apps to display and easier for people to read

@Gargron maybe an abstract form or summary, but no I don't think the full rules could be properly expressed that way, and I would not like something simplified like that presented as being the definitive terms of use.

@mike But your rules already are kind of a bullet point list 🤔

@Gargron I'm in the middle of drafting a replacement. That's a temporary thing that's been around about three years longer than intended.

@mike Still though, you could argue if you've got a long complicated document nobody will read that prior to signing up

Bullet point list might not hold all the nuance but people will actually read it

It's not like the extended description is going anywhere

@Gargron what exactly are you proposing? You've made it sound like you'd reduce the rules to a bullet point list for new users and that's it. How about a mock-up of what you're saying?

I want preamble, and some degree of clarification text in place. We know that for most people this is the one and only time they're going to look at this.

@Gargron not especially an issue for me but I think it's doable in general as long as there's a disclaimer that it's a summary and not the complete, definitive ruleset

@Gargron
Hi!
Server's rules you meaned are as "rules for moderation",right?
I think it will be possible to indicate overview of community design by admin.This may help new users for choosing server.
But support & appeal by moderators are most necessary,and this is more difficult and costly than making rules :(

@Gargron hey I really like mastodon. You need to rebrand the name. I'm not a native english speaker and it's hard to remember mastodon. Pick some common name like Too, Toot, Birdy, Crow, 🦅 eagle

Something very common mastodon is hard to remember for non-native English people. I have have quit twitter with 6k fans and will move future tech communities to DApps

@Gargron my rules are already a flat list of bullet points

@Gargron We really need a set of ISO style warning labels for privacy and security of information systems. Someone completely illiterate can tell at a glance if something is flammable or poisonous, and should be able to do the same for basic infosec.

@Gargron

I probably could but that would remove the very important framing of it as a list of Things That May Harsh The Admin’s Buzz. It would also remove the short TL;DR at the end that summarizes the general thrust of the rules with a bit of humor.

Brian!

@Gargron we kind of already do this, though i think having at least a freeform footer helps as we keep some other notes there
