Have you ever seen an oak tree dance?

Britain is full of 'lost' rainforests, predominantly in the southwest and northwest of England, western/northwestern parts of Wales and the west coast of Scotland. There are other areas where the conditions are perfect too, like this one in the Peak District National Park.

When the rain starts and the cloud base drops into the rainforest, the trees come alive. Everywhere you look, there is magic and mystery.

@timsmalley Left hand photo is fantastic. Beautiful composition, colors, etc. Is this right out of the camera (which?) or did you edit?

Tantric Diva

@timsmalley these are absolutely beautiful, haunting and magical. Thankyou for sharing

Katie-astrophe

@timsmalley well this is just beautiful. The Peaks are on my doorstep and a frequent stomping ground when I have the time off work. Which forest is this? Looks sorta like Lud's Church, but I might be imagining it…

Andrew Maynard

@timsmalley Beautiful -- where were they taken? Have a Padley Gorge look

Jen

@timsmalley
Those might be some of the prettiest trees I have ever seen.... wow

Gussets

@timsmalley
What stunning pics, and so atmospheric. I hadn't heard of the lost rainforests till I heard a talk recently by Ian Rotherham of Sheffield Hallam Uni.

JP

@timsmalley This looks like something straight from Tolkien book.

thank you for the magical memory!

Tim Smalley

@BramsRockhopper they are indeed, thanks for your kind words

blob

@timsmalley Wow, this is insanely beautiful, radiating a sense of peace and wildness. Thanks for these images!

Phil Allsopp

@timsmalley Briiliant photos. Trees are indeed alive and amazingly communicate via their own internet courtesy of fungi.

People aren’t the only smart form of life :)

Trees and shrubs on the Salt River Indian Reservation (Phoenix Metro Region, AZ)

Tim Smalley

@pallsopp42 yep, it's true. They also communicate through their roots and through scents they release to warn their neighbours of predators.

@timsmalley
You know where else there is a superabundance of oak trees?
Southeastern Louisiana, particularly New Orleans.
You cannot go 100 meters without seeing one.

Tim Smalley

@ktdoggett awesome, I'd love to visit one day. Most of my time in the States was in Silicon Valley, Portland OR, NYC, and Austin

AB Art

@timsmalley stranded to see this just now, I've been doing so e preliminary work on a paiting of two trees in a "dizzy dancing tangle" . Lovely shots!

Tim Smalley

@ABArt thanks for your kind words, and I hope your painting is coming along nicely?

@timsmalley Magical, wonderfull. Can't withdraw my eyes from them!

greenwayfoods

@timsmalley they're terrific pics... Just so capture the mood

@timsmalley @ukorchids Nice fern-covered woods on Seil Island, near Kilmartin, Scotland. Taught the dog to ignore rabbits in 30 min in nearby field.

Candace Robb

@timsmalley Thank you for this Monday morning (for me) magic, Tim!

@timsmalley
Great photos! Temperate rainforest is a wonderful habitat in which I've spent a lot of time, mostly in W Scotland doing moss & liverwort surveys.

Tim Smalley

@benaveris That's wonderful Ben, thank you. I wish I had more days in the month/weeks in the year to be able to spend quality time up in Ardnamurchan, Torridon & Sutherland. I've got a visit to Shieldiag on the cards, as I want to visit the remnants of ancient Caledonian pine forest and the 3,000-year-old temperate rainforest on the slopes of Beinn Shieldiag. It's all about timing though as I need some dreich conditions - there's no point going all that way for blue skies and harsh light.

Clayton Dewey

@timsmalley this is beautiful and came at a time I needed a reminder of the good in this world. Thank you for sharing.

Tim Smalley

@clayton glad I dropped into your timeline at the right time. I hope you're feeling better now. All the very best :flan_thumbs:

MaryMarasKittenBakery

@timsmalley
Beautiful picture, makes me long for more places like that. Wish we would stop destroying them

Tim Smalley

@MaryMarasKittenBakery yep, we are the most intelligent species to grace our planet, but we are also one of the dumbest. Thanks for your kind words Mary!

Jill duh

@timsmalley thank you for the delicious nature break

Tim Smalley

@Gilda you're welcome - glad they brought you some joy. Thank you for your kind words.

PoetryinTransl

@timsmalley Would you mind saying where in the Peak District this is? Beautiful photos.

Tim Smalley

@poetryintransl hi there, I don't tend to reveal smaller locations that can't take huge influxes of people as I follow the Nature First principles. What I will say is that it's a gorge not too far from Hathersage.

Rob Middleton

@timsmalley beautiful! Have you ever been to Wistman’s Woods? Supposedly the Devonian Wild Hunt passes that way.

Tim Smalley

@rlmiddleton yep, I have. It's a beautiful location. I tend to avoid the popular spots... or, at least, when they start getting popular I tend to move on. I've been exploring some of the temperate rainforest on Exmoor for the last few years while on summer holiday. We aim for beach weather, so the worst time of year for woodland photography, but if there's pea soup in the air I'll be out there in a flash. πŸ˜†

Andy Burgess

@timsmalley @IcySedgwick - those are some lovely shots, and a beautiful description. We saw some similar work by Jasper Goodall at the weekend, showing his work with trees at night.

Tim Smalley

@andyravensable @IcySedgwick Thanks for your kind words.

I have a project in mind for winter in a forest full of ghost-like ancient hornbeam pollards that really need to be shot in the dark - it was actually inspired by two things... being involved in a Halloween haunted forest event at the location and an article I saw on Jasper's work in The Guardian.

The bearded moss just looks so beautiful in that image of Jasper's.

Andy Burgess

@timsmalley @IcySedgwick - amazing, I’d be interested in seeing that!

Icy Sedgwick

@andyravensable @timsmalley Jasper's work is just beautiful, isn't it? But Tim, yours is stunning!

Tim Smalley

@IcySedgwick @andyravensable it's stunning... it really provokes a lot of thought. Thanks for your kind words

jasondematx

@timsmalley gorgeous and beautiful. got back into photography and found I love taking pictures of wiggly trees like this. I look at them totally differently now. makes my regular ol' neighborhood a brand new place.

Tim Smalley

@jasondematx that's beautiful, thanks for sharing. You're right... it means you don't need to travel for a snuffed out sunrise/sunset. I'm always on the lookout for pea soup in the weather forecast. :)

James David Chapman

@timsmalley Aw thanks for this.

Nothing quite like them for-rest.

Donsploitation

@timsmalley Amazing trees and very well captured in your photos. Love them and thanks for sharing

xangpow

@timsmalley I love this. This is where tales of wonder, mystery and fantasy are born. 😍

Scottiedog

@timsmalley These pictures are wonderful. There is a lovely old old forest near Strontian with some amazing oaks and Douglas firs.

ikeacurtains

@timsmalley

truly these forests are the inspiration of so much fantasy.

Marsha Maung

@timsmalley so beautiful! Yes, I've seen trees like these dance in either a rainy setting or when it is Windy. 😍 Beautiful

SewHappy

@timsmalley That is a marvelous set of pictures. Thank you for sharing. it reminds me of some of the pictures that Terri Windling has shared on terriwindling.com/

Tim Smalley

@SewHappy1960 thanks for sharing Terri's website - I will check it out.

Chriz

@timsmalley Oak trees are my absolute favorite and I don’t know why! πŸ˜„ Thank u for sharing these beautiful pictures!

kalizoid313

@timsmalley

In the Northern California hills, I have heard the oaks that live there make music in the strong winds...

Tim Smalley

@biffvernon thanks for sharing, I've read Guy's book - it is brilliant.

Based on the prevalence of indicator species, there are potential rainforest areas further east than the currently published studies. I know Guy's project is a work in progress (a brilliant one at that), so there's clearly more to do.

This map uses crowdsourcing to identify potential locations google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?h

There are some fairly extensive liverwort studies in woodland in Derbyshire, too.

wennefer

@timsmalley Thank you for sharing the stunning photos. Temperate rain forests are beautiful. Haven’t seen those in England, but have visited in Vancouver Island and the California Coast. The photos also remind me of some of the shrines and gardens around Kyoto, full of gnarled trees and verdant moss.

Tim Smalley

@wennefer Thanks for your kind words.

I've been to the gardens around Kyoto in my former life. They're absolutely stunning. And I've always wanted to visit Vancouver Island - I made it as far as Vancouver, but didn't go further than that sadly. One day!

radiocartoonist

@timsmalley Fabulous, both the trees and photography.

Alison Domakin

@timsmalley wow amazing! I live in the High Peak- was this near Sheffield?

Catherine Burton

@timsmalley Beautiful pictures whereabouts in Peaks is it? I am thinking Padley Gorge maybe? If not looks like somewhere I need to add to my explore list.

Polyhymns

@timsmalley do you know where this is in the #peakdistrict? Looks like Padley Gorge - one of my favourite places.

@timsmalley to me, all oak trees seem to dance πŸ’š

Janice Hazell

@timsmalley my goodness they’re twisty and gnarly and beautiful. I had no idea.

Clare Savory

@timsmalley Gorgeous Tim! Where are these trees?! I’ve definitely seen trees just like this near Black Rocks/Cromford Moor… 🧐
