@josh This may inadvertently be justifying one of the concerns about Mastodon, is it not? While parody is awesome (and I did a lot of spittakes while reading the local feed) no trusted certifying authority means feeding the lawyers everywhere... and God knows, nobody wants that.

@kurtsh Yeah that local feed is something, right?

There's def a new learning curve in verifying authenticity, but I think it'll shake out alright. What I'm seeing suggests that brands will use their domain names as their mark of authenticity.

@kurtsh @josh I mean, there are 2 main ways to "verify" your account.

* Start your own instance. Nobody can claim the CNN.com domain, which means account created there are genuine CNN accounts.

* Add link to your website on your profile, and the link to Mastodon on your website. This will verify the website as being yours.

In my opinion this makes more sense than a funny emoji next to your name.
