Having been here since 2016, I can tell you there is definitely no such thing as a consensus on usage of content warnings on the fediverse. It's a decentralized network that doesn't belong to any one party, so by definition there is no single culture on it. Different corners have different expectations and customs.

@Gargron I didn’t know this existed until this week. How has it not been widely known?

@Gargron long time 🐦 user, very new here. Trying to learn the ways of the land. I trust the oldbies here to give some slack and friendly point out faux pas. Very much wanting to learn the fediquette.

@Gargron that is reasonable, but I must say the sign up process is overly techie--I say that as long time tech nerd

@Gargron
I am using the CW simply as a "show more" and reducing the Toot to a headline which people can expand if they're interested.
It should speed up reading in the timeline, particularly where long Toots are concerned.
Is this a legitimate use of the CW do you think.
I'm using it here as a demo of what I do.

@Gargron hey, do you think its possible someday for end to end encryption? Is that on the roadmap?

@Gargron given that different places in a federated network have different rules or customs, would it make sense to have functionality to add a CW to a boost? Is that even possible? I guess it risks it becoming a quote-boost?

@Gargron This so reminds me of NNTP servers back in the 1980s and 90s. Some servers honoured newgroup and rmgroup messages from anyone or by request, or not at all unless on a signed canonical list. Concensus in the 80s led to anarchy in the 90s. Anyone remember the newgroup flood that was an Ascii Art "picture" of #JerryGarcia?

@Gargron

I can see using CW for NSFW content but if I used it for political content, as one person suggested today, I would have to CW nearly all of my toots. If you don't like reading about politics, you should definitely not follow me!

Poker Face

@Gargron "When logged into Rome's server, post as the Romans post". I don't know Greek, but just know that I wanted to post this in Greek.

certified sheydkisser

@Gargron so it’s like a way more confusing version of tumblr then?

@Gargron cw are a mistake and are a cope scope on posts are a cope. Reports are a cope you're a cope.

@Gargronat

at my disposal so that i can craft a post that has the impact i would intend.

seems silly for some topics to always behind a CW and others not

@Gargron Thank you. People seem to struggle to understand that the norms on your server may not be the same on another, and even less so across the entire Fediverse, even though content flows between them seamlessly.

A vegan-centric server might prefer content warnings on photos of charcuterie, but probably not a Brazilian server, and they wouldn't to expect the entire Fediverse to adhere to their standards.

@Gargron I think that’s the biggest culture shift that everyone is still getting used to. I really appreciate your thoughts on things, especially as a newbie.

@Gargron I hope you take this same people perspective and add quote toots

gatchie

@Gargron i’m a #newbie here in mastodon. Any tips? 😄

@Gargron Don’t listen to the pressure from those (like myself) that came here from Twitter. This place doesn’t need to turn into Twitter. We need to adapt to what’s new. Personally, I’m loving it here.

@Gargron I really appreciate you spelling out these pearls. It's so obvious when you say it! Good to be educated. Thank you.

@Gargron Thank you. But I struggle with the use of #cw (60 % of my posts are covered by this) but I follow the written and unwritten rules and like to respect the culture. During the short term I have been here I have not left any litter on the #Mastodon floor so to speak, although many seem not follow the same standards in posts about #politics and do not use the label CW. Given the growth, some clarity would we welcome as to the law of the land when posting about politics.

@Gargron
Nice heads up thanks, I just joined. As my feed is currently filled with beautiful inspiring landscape photography, was coming around to the view that maybe Mastodon wasn't the place for exercising my introspective opinions... Still, I'm going to go for a walk and see if I can't join the people making more uplifting contributions.

@Gargron yes, it is very much dependent on where you are in the #Fediverse, my home is usually in eldritch.cafe nowadays, where people are very cognizant of sensitivities and don't hesitate to use CWs. (if I'm in doubt, I always do). I have been on anticapitalist.party @AriadneAnarchist since 2017, and I never used CWs there, and even now that is where I mostly follow the news. I think what no one wants, new arrivals or 'veterans', is to recreate twitter in the #Fediverse. I think that is my biggest fear, well, not really, but my biggest fears would require a CW ;) @adamdavidson

@Gargron

How do I apply as Moderator to help ? I can provide newbies with lists to follow as everyone is asking the same thing

Carolyn Shannon

@Gargron a consensus on usage of CW in the fediverse would be similar to getting consensus by all software producers on taxonomies & tagging of their documentation content. Good luck!

However, it may be helpful to talk about & showcase good examples of tagging patterns,UI patterns, and how they support (or don’t) core use routines.

Trading Places Research

@Gargron Once someone explained it as a headline not a content warning, I use it all the time now

healyn

@Gargron there will be a consensus once i get done with it

Tinu - Empress of Twerk

@Gargron As one of the people central to this controversy I feel I should clear some things up.

My problem was never content warnings. I asked a question. Behind a content warning. As a reply I will link it here.

My question was, as a Black person, would I need to talk about both race and racism behind a content warning.

The general consensus was yes because people found it triggering.

When I first asked, I was thinking of news items with triggering photos. I later found out that

David Langford

@Gargron -- I wondered about that when an old friend complained that, checking me out here on mastodon.nl, he found my profile page featured a "trending" hashtag that included hard porn photos with no content warning.

Jesse Liberty

@Gargron thanks. I should have guessed that but when in a new land one wants to avoid inadvertently offending

amypike

@Gargron thank you. I hope not to get banned from all of mastodon for being a rape victim who doesn't want to be told to shut up.

@Gargron @mattblaze A note about content warning from Mastodon's creator.

graceinnyc

@Gargron Thanks for Mastodon, Eugen. Newly subscribed and having fun exploring.

cpgorski

@Gargron @mattblaze ... the downside of that seems to be, people from all over the fediverse feel like they are justified in harassing newcomers who violate their (narrow, single-cultural) expectations... instead of blocking and moving on

Stephen Sherman

@Gargron My favorite part of this is "having been here since 2016" 😀
