Finally, my account @atomicpoet@vancity.social exists because I figured that Metro Vancouver and BC needs a local instance, and who better to get the ball rolling than me?
And @thatonecalculator asked if I'd be willing to help him bug test his new Fediverse app. I looked at it, thought he had something nice, so thought, "Why not?"
Registrations are open on that instance, but I only encourage you to register if you're from Metro Vancouver, BC, or have an interest in the local area or culture. (Cont.)

Now should everyone do what I have done with creating new instances?
Yes—with a caveat!
1. You have to be willing to learn new things, such as how the Fediverse works
2. You have to be comfortable with configuring DNS and cloud services
3. You have to be willing to moderate often, make updates, and help provide tech support to users on *your* instance
This is real work, and shouldn't be underestimated. But if you're willing to put in the work—do it! (Cont.)
