Gregory's ServerI have ordered a more powerful machine for our database server from Hetzner last evening, but they still haven't provisioned it. It seems we're doomed to experience these processing delays until I can get my hands on more hardware. Sorry!

 TIL that my federation with mastodon.social is over LAN :D @Gargron Sometimes waiting is the best we can do. I'm guessing that Hetzner might be busier too. Today on things that break Smithereen: this post has more than 100 replies and I only now remembered that I just do "LIMIT 100" without any kind of pagination when rendering the thread page ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ @gargron There was a holiday yesterday in parts of germany so that mightve been the issue. @Gargron I don't know if it's of any help, but since a few minutes mastodon.social is again performing very well. Looks like the upgrade worked. @Gargron You are doing a great job, thank you very much for all your hard work and all the time you spend! It can't be easy trying to manage the sudden influx of new users. @Gargron Personally, I recommend you all recommend your IRL friends join a #Friendica instance right now, they can still interact with #Mastdoon and I am unaware of any current lag. And you might want to try it out yourself. @Gargron @marcvanbreemen @fu @dankim312 @marcvanbreeman@mastodon.social prior to completely leaving freedom-denying closed source corporate social media earlier this year, I had primarily used Facebook as my platform of choice as I never really "got" Twitter, so YMMV.
@Gargron would payments to Patreon help support more responsive and resilient server capacity? I'm not sure if there are norms for nodes to have subscription/donation payments to support infrastructure or anything, but this could be worth clarifying. I'd be happy to pitch in something to improve service, but unclear how that works @Gargron @ashlock not uncommon at all. Lots of the smaller instances run by some random dude out of a server in their basement have pinned posts requesting money, whether Bitcoin or whatever else. I don't think I've ever seen Patreon before, as it is uses freedom-denying closed source SaaS to facilitate transactions, which is general frowned upon by a significant portion of the 'verse.

And you are a hero my friend! 🦸🏻♂️ @gargron Just an idea: Is it possible that an interface can be created to show the load of servers during registration e.g. via the official Mastodon apps? Linked to the note that there may currently be performance problems on server xy. In this way, the expectations of new users can be appeased somewhat, or they can also choose alternative server instances. @Gargron I used your brief tutorial post on moving from one instance (mastodon.social) to another (sciences.social), but followers haven't moved over.
