Google finally did it. Is it time to switch to Firefox? I believe users should be in control of what they can install and use on their desktop or laptop. There's uBlock Origin Lite, which replaces the original uBlock Origin for Chrome and similar browsers. Give it a try.

Google chrome turned of 'uBlock Origin' extension. It is time to switch to Firefox. There's uBlock Origin Lite, which replaces the original uBlock Origin for Chrome

mercurial thingy

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I heard that uBlock Lite isn't as fully-featured though.

Switching to Firefox is probably the best thing to do. Google will only get worse and worse from here. Sure, Firefox also isn't the best but it's better than Google.

mikeTesteLinux

@melroy @ricardo @nixCraft I think Firefox is the bare minimum, its possible to hardent it, but for simplicity, those options have some adventages, but for libre wolf, I think it's a small team, so maby update wont come as fast as firefox. For Floorp, dunno who is behind it, but heard good thing about it, so, I'll probably give it a shot.

Leszek

@ricardo @nixCraft I'm curious how long until #firefox disable it. I'm using @zenbrowser for a few weeks and I'm positively surprised! @Vivaldi also works great. Good news there are fantastic alternatives :)

Milos

@lpryszcz @ricardo @nixCraft @zenbrowser @Vivaldi I'd like to believe that this won't happen. Firefox does get some revenue from Google, but I doubt that Google will pressure it into limiting ad blocking.

mikeTesteLinux

@doctor_zoidberg @lpryszcz @ricardo @nixCraft @zenbrowser @Vivaldi Antitrus lawsuit from US gouvernement will probably for them to turn on their user, a way or an other, without Google revenue

RandamuMaki

@lpryszcz @ricardo @nixCraft @zenbrowser @Vivaldi Vivaldi unfortunately does run on the Chromium backend. The question is how long they can maintain a fork and keep Google's uselessness out.

mcSlibinas

@ricardo @nixCraft oh, for not advanced users, like mom or dad, librewolf is no go. Can't remember fullscreen, can't set dark theme, it's not easy to set some sites keep paswords. Floorp is the browser for people, for advanced users - librewolf.

hindsight

@mcSlibinas @ricardo @nixCraft
Oi you.. " not advanced users, like mom or dad"..
not only am I a dad but also a grandad..
it was my generation that made the web..
and I've been on the internet since 1990/91 can't remember exactly.. ๐Ÿ˜›

mcSlibinas

@hindsight @ricardo @nixCraft so cool! So you are an exception of average user or average of average user?

My opinion - average user web browse as farming in greenhouse: he plants dozen or less sites on start page, it's some social, some shoping, some communall and browse inside those plants.

Librewolf forgets every thing average user needs.

So that's why i suggest floorp. I can set floorp for "mom" and it will work later forever. Librewolf - only one session. Can you understand?

JJ Celery

@mcSlibinas
@ricardo @nixCraft I believe @hindsight was ever so gently pointing out to you that "mom and dad" is at best a clumsy shorthand for "nontechnical user" and at worst actively hurting your ability to connect with end users and their needs

"Average nontechnical user" is sure longer to type but doesn't insult anyone or perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

paul
@nixCraft Firefox, Vivaldi, Floorp, Ironwolf, Seamonkey, Opera... so many options. Why do people still use Chrome?
Kees de Kooter ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿ‰

@nixCraft By all means send a big๐Ÿ–•to Google and ditch Chrome.

patricus

@nixCraft and youtube now shows a popup on brave, whenever I play a video, pathetic.

Cody Boone Ferguson

@patricus @nixCraft why not get yt-dlp ? Google constantly fights with it but itโ€™s just a game of cat and mouse. It solves all the problems if you have a computer.

patricus

@xexyl @nixCraft why not waste a half of an hour downloading something before actually watching it?

SweetAI Belle :sweetunsure:

@nixCraft
I've been on firefox for quite a while at this point because I knew they were eventually going to do this...

Snagburz

@nixCraft
I've found that you better quit using Firefox., too
They have stopped offering the "Do Not Track" options.
There's a fork named #LibreWolf, you ca use instead.

pnqk.me/udr2h8

r3vilo

@snagburz @nixCraft DNT is and was never a protection. The website decides how to respond to this flag. If they want or not want to respect your wish not to be tracked. I bet the most sites ignore how it is set. For me its not a criteria choosing a browser. And dont forget to seperate Desktop and mobile. I really like Firefox based browsers but when unsing Android, sandboxing is still better in Chromium based ones. Not an unimportant fact.

Rich Felker

@snagburz @nixCraft DNT was dropped because it ended up being a tracking vector itself (another bit of fingerprinting information) and nobody honored it. If you want to stop tracking you have to block it forcefully (UBO) not ask politely.

Nitro :blobHajReach:

@snagburz @nixCraft
They removed Do Not Track because the toggle did absolutely nothing. Actually, it offered a way for websites to actually track the users even further. So them removing the option was actually a good thing. Though I agree with the sentiment that Librewolf is a better option these days. I don't like Mozilla at all.

vermaden

@nixCraft

> Is it time to switch to Firefox?

I have been using #Firefox since the end of legendary #Opera 12.x series - I never understood what people see in #Chrome ...

Some guide for #UNIX systems below:
vermaden.wordpress.com/2024/03

MegatronicThronBanks

@nixCraft Chromium should still support it. Try Brave unless you have issues with using it.

Rich Felker

@megatronicthronbanks @nixCraft ๐Ÿคฎ no don't use the homophobic shitcoin browser.

Apicultor ๐Ÿ

@nixCraft >Is it time to switch to Firefox?

That time was long ago, friend.

>There's uBlock Origin Lite, which replaces the original uBlock Origin for Chrome and similar browsers. Give it a try.

There's Firefox, which replaces Chrome and similar browsers. Give it a try.

SirWumpus

@nixCraft
@firefox made some bad missteps lately going to the Dark Side. Try LibreWolf, Firefox derivative heavy on privacy and comes with uBlock Origin bundled.

Random_Seed

@nixCraft yes, use Firefox (since forever). IMHO, this rubbish trend of slating Mozilla at the slightest displeasure is supremely ungracious, and reeks of entitlement. I will still use Firefox. I have never used Chrome. Try slating Microsoft, or actual life threatening and dangerous corporations that deserve it.

Secret Squirrel

@Random_Seed @nixCraft This. Firefox with multiple containers extension, and all the privacy stuff of course, is still great. I know that the Web is build around chromium, but it's been ages since I've run into an incompatibility.

And without Mozilla, we have nothing but Google/chromium. Not my preferred future.

Asheville Charlie

@nixCraft
I mean, at this point, if you're still on Chrome that's on you.

Offbeatmammal

@nixCraft Vivaldi isn't perfect, but seems to do a decent job (and uBlock Origin still works even though it's chromium based)

Dane

@Offbeatmammal@mastodon.social @nixCraft@mastodon.social I'm a Vivaldi user as well. My Ublock extension was still working as of last night.

Rosco

@nixCraft With Firefox going down the drain, I would also recommend to stop browsing websites that serve ads and/or track you more than absolutely necessary. Follow more blogs, and switch to RSS feeds.

EyeQ62

@nixCraft I've used Firefox as my main browser for quite a while now. Still have Chrome installed but I very rarely use it.

PeBo

@nixCraft
Get rid of google stuff entirely. Contacts, mail, calendar -> @mailbox_org + @davx5app
Photos cloud sync -> @ente
Videoconferencing -> @OpenTalkMeeting

Its fairly simple. If someone cant do it on its own, help them.

xs4me2

@nixCraft

I never left the Mosaic, Netscape, Firefox line of developments. And quite happy with that. Since 1993.

#webbrowser

Javipz

@nixCraft remember also #pihole Not only for #raspberrypi I run It on #docker and It can use the same add blocking lists that uses #uBlockOrigin

Puntarella

@nixCraft I'm pretty happy with Zen Browser (Desktop) and Mull (Mobile). Both are debloated Firefox bases.

bazkie, bonkwave superstar

@nixCraft YES, switch to the non-megacorporation browser. it's an obvious choice tbh :)

Ivan Bk

@nixCraft I have been using only Firefox and librewolf for a long time. I don't miss chrome

thehcj
The other option is using brave, though I highly doubt they will maintain the extension when the v3 requirement is rolled out fully
the unbeliever

@nixCraft
uBlock Origin still working fine with the latest Ungoogled Chromium - Version 131.0.6778.204 (on Linux Mint 22)

Cody Boone Ferguson

@nixCraft lynx.

No. But how utterly surprising. Nowadays I use Safari but when I had a GUI linux box (now itโ€™s just the server and the one with a GUI, fedora, is down for a while) I used firefox.

I am surprised you still used chrome. Google talks about how safe and secure chrome is and how many attacks chrome prevents but itโ€™s rubbish like this that does the exact opposite. But itโ€™s unsurprising sadly.

Scaalp

@nixCraft
From Netscape, I never use anything else than Firefox.

David Palk #FBPE #RejoinEU

@nixCraft re: Firefox. I did start using it a many years back but i) it kept giving 404 errors, when there were none ii) lack of uptake meant less 'reach'. For information gatherers like myself that was a big -ve.

Justin (StayGrounded.online)

@nixCraft There's an old proverb that goes: "The best time to switch to Firefox is twenty years ago. The second best time is now."

Don Burnside

@nixCraft @trendytoots ublock on windows 11/Firefox no longer works with YouTube. Iโ€™m hoping that changes.

Big George

@nixCraft even edge is better lately.... even on Linux

zetabeta

@nixCraft
weird that ladybird wasn't mentioned.

ladybird.org/

personally i haven't tested, but worth mentioning.

chromium is developed by google. however, mozilla takes google's money to develop firefox. maybe firefox based is less worse, but there is still google's money and influence somehow.

Jost :thisisfine: ๐Ÿ”ฅ

@nixCraft I like the look and feel of @zenbrowser which is also based on firefox. However, it just entered beta.

RejZoR

@nixCraft uBlock Lite has less filtering and blocking capabilities. It has full in Firefox. I'd recommend everyone to switch to Firefox anyway. Chrome is shit.

labria

@nixCraft youโ€™re sending mixed messages here ;)

Karma Sahne - R.I.P @natenom

@nixCraft I've never switched to Chrome. It looks like it was a good decision.

Milos

@nixCraft Why use broken version of the plugin when you have Firefox? Don't like Firefox - try Brave, it blocks most of the ads with no extensions and works great with YouTube.

Draken BlackKnight

@nixCraft
Brave still lets you use uBlock Origin. It's buried in the settings. Paired with their built-in shields, it's worth a try if the crypto stuff and Brendan Eich's views aren't dealbreakers.

The Tired Horizon

@nixCraft Firefox has been documented as having its own issue in recent months...

..I'd say switch it up between FF, Brave and Opera. I think Duckduck do a browser too - certainly for mobile.

Mr Fry

@nixCraft Pretty sure itโ€™s been time to switch to Firefox since Chrome came out. Now Mozilla is getting naughty, highly recommend Mercury browser with AdNauseam extension!

Juli Jane

@nixCraft Luckily I have a magic spell applied that spares me from that issue until mid 2025. But I believe this requires a Google Workspace account.

Freevolt

@nixCraft My theory is that, when it comes to buy a product of an established type, if available, choose the second best brand. The market-leading best brand will mix some crappy aspects as long as they think they won't cost them the market-leading position. The second-best brand, on the other hand, doesn't usually affort that and will usually keep away from the crap factor as much as possible (unless the 'crap' is a market's de-facto standard).

mikeTesteLinux

@nixCraft Sad day, but for some pwa, its required, use it only when required, rest of the time, my Firefox with hardened script feature, probably give a shot at Floorp.

CBinNYC

@nixCraft
I donโ€™t understand why anyone uses a browser created by the company that turned humanity into a commodity.

We *know* Google sees us as lemmings to be captured and sold. Why feed your captor?

#dumpgoogle

bhaugland

@nixCraft YouTube discovered my unlock origin on Firefox yesterday. What really made me mad was the fact that a big corporation thinks it has the right to examine my computer. If I wanted that I would use windows

groundie

@nixCraft i've left both Chrome and Firefox. currently pretty happy with Waterfox, a descendant of Firefox.

Katz

@nixCraft I switched away from Chrome years ago.

YouTube tried to stop me from using an adblocker, but it's easy to get around with Brave. I've heard of problems with Brave's CEO, but it just works for me usually.

If the scandal with Brave is too much for you, Firefox, Vivaldi, or Opera are good too. There's also Chromium which is basically de-googled chrome.

Don't let them feed you garbage advertising.

Pro-tip: many VPNs can do adblocking as well.

VessOnSecurity

@nixCraft Origin Lite is inferior in many ways. For instance, its rules can be updated only when a new version is published, there are no custom rules, etc.

A better solution is to change browser. I'm quite happy with Brave, used Opera and Vivaldi before that, which are also OK. Despite being Chromium-based like Chrome, Brave doesn't have this shit, so the extension works. Plus, Brave has its own built-in ad blocking, which wouldn't be subject to this crap, even if the crap were to be ported from Chromium, because it is browser-based, not extension-based.

@nixCraft Why not DuckDuckGO? They show how many and who they blocked?

Matt Collins

@nixCraft librewolf. Firefox with the Mozilla money-malware stripped

ใ‚ทใƒŠใƒขใƒญใƒผใƒซ :kirby:

@nixCraft is ungoogled chromium still a thing? I'm told chrome-based browsers have better sandboxing/site isolation than firefox-based (especially on mobile). Adding the container tabs/even more extensions likely harms privacy more than it helps ๐Ÿฅบ

Darren K. Hobbs :unverified:

@nixCraft YES! Why is this a question for so many. With many of these things we complain and complain, but are unwilling to change. Well, this thing sucks now; I guess I'll deal with it. This thing is more expensive now; guess I'll buy it anyway. It is so frustrating to me. Windows, Chrome, fast food, new cars, etc. etc. Everyone complains, but won't change.

hambier

@nixCraft Somehow I have never seen a clear reason to switch. From #Firefox to Chrome that is. Google gets enough data already.

Yes, granted, Firefox had a long bad stretch on Android with almost no extensions available. But at least it always *had* extensions. Why would I use a browser (Chrome) that is utterly unusable on mobile and hence desktop-only?

With Firefox I've always had a usable browser on *all* of my devices. Including syncing of tabs and other cross-device convenience features.

Ezra

@nixCraft @briankrebs I switched to the Brave browser. Chromium based. Supports unblock origin. Has their own filters and privacy controls.

Secular Christmas Robot

@nixCraft I switched to Edge a while back in anticipation of this event.
If they do the same, Firefox is next.

Stefan

@nixCraft @Vivaldi Browser already has uBlock baked in

statiksh0ck

@nixCraft Recently moved to ZenBrowser and simply loving it.

snom fangirl 3000

@nixCraft this is why I dnsblock ads, doesnโ€™t depend on anyoneโ€™s permission

Zephod Beeblebrox

@nixCraft Chrome aka chromium is responsible for 90% of the crashed my Linux Mint machine suffers.

royal

@nixCraft Vivaldi has its own built in ad blocking.

caranea

@nixCraft
Firefox, uBlock, NoScript, and Privacy Badger. Does require juggling some settings, but generally can get everything to work.

Dan Hugo (เนเธ”เธ™)

@nixCraft

It has always been time to switch to Firefox (don't ignore the anti-FF type lately, follow it and comment as a userโ€ฆ also check out waterfox)

(I worked at NSCP back in the day, Core Technologies)

TheStrangelet :bc:

@nixCraft But, but, but... I thought my computer was MY computer?!

๐ŸŒ€bedient Lady

@nixCraft
If you're a Vivaldi user (chromium fork) then give Zen Browser (Firefox fork) as they're both superior asthetically. Zen has the benefit of Firefox extentions.

But yeah, Firefox is probably the safest bet for usability.

Gitano

@nixCraft i use Firefox-ESR (Extended Support Release) + uBlock Origin.

I like ESR cause its rock stable, and on ublock added the experience on the web its unmatched
