@lanodan @a1ba at least writing a PKGBUILD for arch seems easy, compared to RPMs or DEBs

@MischievousTomato @a1ba Arch is more of a pain because of the absolute instability of the system.
Quite like how with python you need to at least bump your packages every 6 months in most distros.

@lanodan @a1ba :think_happy: i guess. I havent messed with packaging yet. Currently, as just a user who loves the concept of flatpak but still hates how messy it is, arch and its aur work greatly.

@MischievousTomato @a1ba Flatpak is a horrible hack.
Learn static linking if you want to ship blobs that ignore the distro.

@MischievousTomato @a1ba @lanodan

the only good packaging methods are source code and guix/nix :chad:

@iska @MischievousTomato @lanodan let's make cross-distro solution without loopdevice bullshit like Snap and bind mount like Flatpak based on Nix.

Like isn't it already possible to just install nix to existing system?

@iska @MischievousTomato @a1ba @lanodan Counterpoint: slackpkg
>Slackbuilds are literally just shell files
>Slackpkgs are literally just tarballs of the filesystem with some extra description and postinstall information within
>You could literally just tar xvf whatever-x.y.z.tar.xz in / and run all the commands in postinst
>Doesn't have that whack non-UNIX filesystem structure special snowflake shit that nix and guix do
If I didn't use Gentoo for the sole purpose of telling people to install Gentoo, I'd be using Slackware. Runner-up for least retarded packaging method goes to AppImages, despite the schizophrenic inventor.

@MischievousTomato @a1ba @iska @idiot Yeah, I love launching an appimage and having it throw an error about something like libsystemd1 (journald support I guess?) being missing.

@MischievousTomato @a1ba @iska @lanodan Yeah but if you (read: 🤮 d*veloper 🤮) were going to be a stubborn asshole and pick one packaging method for the entirety of GNU/Linux, I'd at least prefer the one I can download and throw into $PATH and not have to do any dumbass aliasing to get working.
Guess that's just me though, everyone else seems to be happy installing shit on their Decks through the KDE whatever store. I love having to go in and fuck around with the Big Picture interface that doesn't scroll with long commands properly to figure out what any particular non-Steam /usr/bin/flatpak application is because there's only ten fucking gorllion long flags involved in that fucking shit.

@MischievousTomato @a1ba @iska @lanodan And just so you know I'm not kidding: look at this fucking shit and tell me it's an acceptable way to launch an application.
(Also pop quiz: which one of the Pokemon Yellow ROMs that I have downloaded is this? Spoiler alert: you can't use the <- or -> keys on the keyboard to find out, you have to swipe with your finger on the touchscreen. Thanks Valve.)

It's always two steps forward and one step back with these fucking people. At least it does a really good job at being a gay baby jail for proprietary software.
