Unity (former game engine company) has merged with an actual adware and malware distribution company. That's not an exaggeration. Fake Flash installers, was blacklisted by Microsoft's anti-malware tool, VirusTotal entires, that kind of thing.

Don't build your games on engines you don't have the source code to.

... if you can avoid it. Pico-8, GameMaker (though they're on some crappy subscription thing now), etc. are all OK for making smaller games. If you're going to invest many months or years of your life into some long-running project, maybe consider Unreal or Godot, instead.

Just realized I typoed "entries" for "entires" 🤦

@cancel Mmm, the sweet smell of surveillance capitalism 😋

I'm glad the last Unity-based release of #KerbalSpaceProgram is already out. :ac_shock:

Hteph

@cancel heh, time to drop it then. I was thinking of getting back into it when this selling and moving shenanigans is over as I would have more time at hand without house and garden.

I guess I can spend that time learning Godot instead!

@cancel I guess Godot's about to receive a surge of new users

damn if only someone had warned us about the dangers of proprietary software

imagine how different things could have been

@cancel hilarious, this company is like a ship hitting an iceberg over and over again for ten years. VC will fuck up your brain

@cancel "What if that process was no longer "first create; then monetize?” What if creators had an engine for live games that by default enabled them to gain early indicators of success for their games through user acquisition of their prototype, and gave them a feedback loop to improve their games based on real player interactions as early in the process as possible?"

Imagine if we got rid of anything resembling joy or art from the process and refined it into pure capitalism!

@cancel Unfortunately I am vendor locked with one of my titles. As solo hobbyist dev i just dont have the time/money to get all the assets separately, so I've relied on unity bundles a lot.

I could perhaps ask the asset creators (mostly 3d models) if I am allowed to use them outside of unity.

Another thing is that as much as I hate this, learning new engine comes with a cost: time.

I will have to see how this develops over time, i dont have high hopes tho..

@cancel What I am worried most is that if unity games will be bundled with some malicious crapware with them now. And I really dont want that to anyone who plays my games.

If that's what happens, I believe learning new engine is going to be good idea.

That being said, I am going to use Godot in future for other projects. This current unity project though, it's something i want to really make correct and pour all my knowledge in.

@cancel Last bit of ramble:

I believe the ad-crap is mostly focused on mobile and web games however. That's where it's mostly used after all.

@cancel Anyone looking for alternatives might find this helpful: codeberg.org/ADHDefy/delightfu

This is a big list of FOSS creative tools that I've been contributing to. There's a ton on it and it's still growing. There's even a Game Dev section with lots of resources (I have a couple minor additions to put up later today, as well).

@hazelnot: GDevelop is an awesome engine to start with. It's like GameMaker, but free and open source with lots of cool features.

Haunted Owlbear

@cancel this is so absolutely status quo for online ad services firms that I'm barely even surprised

Snappy/DM me the word 'bread'

@cancel Valve's Source engine is the way to go when it comes to making video game.

I don't think there's anything sketchy about unreal

Unreal is nonfree first and foremost.
You can get source code, but building it on GNU/Linux is the most you can do (I don't think even personal modifications are legal)

It's also probably spyware like epic store.

GameMaker and PICO-8 are proprietary too, why do you cling on our oppression?

You don't have to use nonfree software. There's so many free libs and engines, it's long been a myth. I've made a game with only free software.

open sauce can't make money

Only if you don't monetize it. I've seen and played libre commercial games.

@iska the you can modify unreal however you want. the things you wrote sound like a cultist. there's more to life than copyright license dogma.

@cancel

okay you can change it privately, but can't share, and there's a ton of other rules...
It also says that you need parents to use the engine if you're not old enough, so definitely spyware. (thanks coppa)

Why do I need rules to compute? Should there be rules on using a hammer, and royalties on chairs made with it?
"sorry I can't pass the saw, seller said I can't"
That's not "cultist"...

@cancel Good. Good! Excellent, this is crappy game engine die.

@cancel It's nice for you to call out proprietary malware, but care to explain about this proprietary malware that you yourself rent out?: https://cancel.fm/ripcord/
You seem to offer the source code under a proprietary license, but after all, there's nothing stopping you from potentially stripping out possible malicious features built in and it'll be hard to tell that you did so.
Bad Software Ideas

@cancel Well, time to add "Using Unity" to the list.

eukara

@cancel Freaking crazy. Never relied on Unity but know many who do. What a shame.

gudinoff

@cancel From what I understood, installCore is just a tool for software distribution that includes monetization by advertisements. What I didn't understand is who caused it's bad image: was it the installCore itself or the way third parties used it?

cancel

@gudinoff Maybe the part where they promote, host, distribute, and broker malware.

gudinoff

@cancel I see... 🤔
Thanks! That info was not turning up on my searches. =)

If you haven't yet, time to pack your bags and move to Godot
