Mastodon: Bluesky is Bad, actually
Bluesky: Mastodon is Bad, actually

It’s like a shit version of West Side Story. how long before a Mastodon user and a Bluesky user fall in love while communicating exclusively over the fedi bridge

Sophie

There’s also a third subset of people who say cross posting is bad, to which I say “cool”

Kilian Valkhof

@sophie it's the whole internet that's Bad, actually.

Paul van Buuren

@Kilian @sophie Every time I see this Romeo & Juliet thing about which social medium is the hottest and the bestest and the most responsible, I think of the wise words of @adactio who wrote: "they’re all just syndication endpoints to me"
adactio.com/journal/20323

db0

@paul @Kilian @sophie @adactio a proper fediverse syndication however is not via copies. Instead your own blog becomes a fediverse publisher and integrates natively. This means for example that people can comment on your articles directly on their own instances and you can reply from your own blog. I just set this up this week in my end dbzer0.com/blog/this-blog-is-n

Harry W.

@sophie Never understood the "Cross posting is bad" concept.
The internet is about communication? Why is it bad to communicate in multiple places?

Lianna

@hazz223 @sophie Because
1) ... you actively promote an unsafe, for-profit service and create FOMO in those who are not on there.
2) ... you do not authentically interact on your "secondary" platform, you merely copy and paste from your actual primary hangout space. It's like getting a party invite where the original recipient was replaced with you by a whiteout pen.
3) ... it is likely that you crosspost just to get more "reach" which points towards an uncomfortable clout-chasing personality.

inpc

@hazz223 @sophie High risk of talking to one’s self… and not in a good way.

Dr. Sarah Pohl

@hazz223 @sophie Does communication work with cross-posting? I thought that was when your posts end up on multiple platforms but you only see replies on your native platform.

Harry W.

@LilithElina Really depends on the way you do it. I've seen some apps are coming out that enable cross posting, all feeds combined, and more.

Katzentratschen

@hazz223 @LilithElina If both sides use brid.gy they're able to communicate. You don't need an app for that and you don't need a second account.

Dr. Sarah Pohl

@katzentratschen @hazz223 Yeah, but a lot of people have not bridges their account.

Katzentratschen

@LilithElina @hazz223 We're talking about two people in love "communicating exclusively over the fedi bridge".

rothko

@katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina so if i use brid.gy, do i open up a portal of evil to my home instance? i'm not quite clear on the techy details.

Katzentratschen

@rothko @hazz223 @LilithElina No other users on your home instance or any other instance are affected if you bridge your account – unless they bridge their account, too. If you boost a post of an un-bridged account, it won't show up on Bluesky. It's strictly opt-in.

fed.brid.gy/docs

rothko

@katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina thank you!!! a group of old friends on FB is ditching it for bluesky and i'm all thanks but no thanks. this is helpful.

rothko

@katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina so if i boost a post from someone over here, will it show up for any bluesky users that follow me here?

Katzentratschen

@rothko @hazz223 @LilithElina If and only if this someone bridges their account. Therefore OP's post doesn't show up on Bluesky.

G. Allais

@hazz223 @sophie For a lot of accounts, you can tell they're primarily somewhere else and don't actually engage "across the bridge". So it becomes a one way channel.

dragonfrog, hungry waffle

@hazz223 @sophie only thing I can think of is often people who post using a cross posting tool don't then engage in conversations because the tool they use is a posting tool not a reading and replying tool. The only thing they read is their follow counts.

Beachbum

@hazz223 @sophie it’s a personal choice. I came here for peace. I don’t want to see anything on any other sites.

Franceska Mann

@hazz223
Some of us don't want to train AI with our free labor for billionaire cunts. That's why I reject cross posting. ❤️

jack is updating your database

@sophie it's the LinkedIn/Fediverse crossposters that tickle me. @jasongorman posting provocative software engineering questions that work just as well here as on LinkedIn

Wesley Cook ⚡🚲

@jackeric @sophie @jasongorman What I think would be cool is if eventually there wasn't as much of a need for cross posting. If everything is federated together then you could post Software Engineering content from your Mastodon account and people on LinkedIn could interact

jack is updating your database

@wesley @sophie @jasongorman the last thing I want is for my LinkedIn contacts to access my Mastodon posts lol

there is a very select crossover

Carlos Francisco 🦣

@sophie people who think the other platform is bad for sure are going to think that crossposting is also bad.

Ricard Torres

@sophie Can't we just turn on federation and everybody lives in their own instance but can chat with each other?

Is this too much to ask? 😢

Lianna

@ricard @sophie The problem is that this is a well-established tactic for corporations like BlueSky to snuff out community-driven "competition".

They're trying to kill us off.

First they embrace the enemy technology (this is where Bluesky supports federation), then they extend its functionality to where people depend on your add-ons (say if they extended ActivityPub by something like emoji reactions), and then they use that leverage to extinguish the competition.

The Gym Nerd

@lianna @ricard @sophie I heard that so many times when Meta "wanted" to open up threads to activity pub.

You can not EEE a network that is not relying on venture capital to exist. If they opt out we go back to where we are now. I don't see a problem in that.

The reality is now, that meta pretends for like a year to open up for federation but they don't really do it because they don't want people inside to know that there exists a whole #fediverse outside.

Lianna

@TheGymNerd @ricard @sophie You are ignoring the likely possibility that a lot of people will begin depending on their add-ons and proprietary extensions for their user experience, and if they rug-pull out of there and "opt-out", then people will be forced to follow. Many will.

Jux [GD] // Cataclysm 81%

@lianna @ricard @sophie we have emoji reactions in the Fediverse, just not on Mastodon

Leigh Garland

@sophie "... But what finally brought them together was a mutual disdain for Threads..."

Robert Kingett

I am writing fic based on this very thing! Needed to exact my creative energy somehow! HA! @toychicken @sophie

Joseph
@sophie If I can’t tap dance in a tight triangular formation with my homies while snapping my fingers and promising to finish blue sky in song… what’s the point? 😜
Ishambard

@sophie

But... Will the soundtrack at least still be a banger?

Play Ball!!! cafechatnoir

@sophie

That would require folks actually enabling the bridge. *headdesk*

John A. Wojtowicz

@sophie Ask not what Mastodon can do for you, ask what you can do to improve the Mastodon experience. All people communicating is a bane to the incoming administration.

Sarcassem :heart_rainbow:

@sophie yeah, I don’t get the elitism of it all. Use what you like, use them all if you want, but stop worrying about what everyone else is using.

Lianna

@cassem @sophie ...with the problem being that if my server federates with Bluesky and therefore sends it my user data, their for-profit crypto/AI investors will get access to my data.

Sarcassem :heart_rainbow:

@lianna @sophie unless your posts are set to private, my understanding is they’ve got it all anyway. I could be wrong.

Sarcassem :heart_rainbow:

@lianna @sophie ostensibly the same way they scrape public data off the web today: bots, spiders, etc

Lianna

@cassem @sophie Scraping the web gets vastly less usable results than having access to actual structured information like post time, boosts, connections to other profiles, posting behavior and so on.

I do machine learning for a living. I wouldn't even attempt using web-scraped social data for analysis unless I was only looking for the simplest metrics like word count.

Sarcassem :heart_rainbow:

@lianna @sophie fair enough. I would say, still not a reason to shame or chide someone else for their decision to use one, the other, or both. Still arrives at you do you.

Lianna

@cassem @sophie I am just suspicious of people who make the conscious choice to go to a corporate, for-profit social media site run by shady crypto and AI investors, when the Fediverse is and has been right here for more than a decade.

That's a decision they make, and it hints towards them being bad people.

Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

@sophie

I'm actually seeing this way more between Threads and Bluesky right now.

Me watching both bickering via The Bridge and Threads Federation. 🍿🍿🍿

🤣

Nerb

@sophie

More like a low budget version of "The Warriors"

Where the Mastodons travel to a meeting with their fellow social groups to discuss taking over all social media.

The Threads set up this meeting to discuss a truce with their fellow social media platforms.

Most of the social media owners applaud this idea, but Elon, the unbalanced and sadistic leader of X shoots Kazi dead as police officers arrive to raid the summit

Elon blames Mastodon for the killing and we get to see the group try to escape.

With a pivotal scene scene of a crazed Elon clicking red bull cans as he taunts the Mastotons with the line.

"Mastodons come out and Toot"

Keenan

@sophie hilariously, on Bluesky, I hardly see Mastodon come up.

Over here, though… People have *lots* to say about Bluesky.

Joakim Fors

@keenan @sophie Could be because here the users to instance ratio is about 333:1 and 19 000 000:1 there.

gyptazy

@sophie fragmentation is bad in this case, where user might miss information and people.

Medea Vanamonde🏳️‍⚧️ ♀

@sophie BlueSky = Sharks
Mastodon = Jets

Jet Boy Jet Girl

The Shark Bites,
With HIS teeth dear,
And he keeps them
Pearly White

Ω 🌍 Gus Posey

@sophie They couldn't be more different. If you can't see why, you deserve Bluesky.

The Gym Nerd

@sophie who on Mastodon is saying Bluesky is bad? It's just that Bluesky refuses to join the same community that Mastodon and so many other applications (like peertube, Misskey, Lemmy, pixelffed...) are using so why should we here in the #fediverse care about Bluesky?

rameez

@sophie That’s me on both platforms, actually. Fishing for the likes and follows. 🤷🏻‍♂️

/s

RK

@sophie haha. I am new to both but already getting a sense of this.

Tony Kennick

@sophie taking a trip and due to snow they have to stay overnight at Threads and there is only one bed.

Chris Brooking

@sophie I don't think Bluesky is bad, it is at risk. Though the AT protocol supports federation, Bluesky itself is non-federated, basically a single feed with its own moderation and block policy. It could be taken over in the future, commercialised, and politicised like Twitter was.

It's like a Mastodon with only one server, where the protocols are incomplete and subject to change, which discourages anyone from building a compatible service. This may change in the future, but for now that's it.

faraiwe

@sophie bothsidism is bad, akshully.

crypto techbro ownership is bad, akshully.

Ho, hum.

#DTBO #BlueSky

Daniel Brotherston

@sophie What exactly is BS's objection to Mastodon?

I've never heard anyone level legitimate criticism of the platform.

Like, yeah, it's different, it's not sticky, it's not algorithmically hacking your brain.

That's like saying "pepsi is bad because I'm hooked on coke". It's a personal preference.

Davey

@sophie but how else are we supposed to know if we're good people

Little1Lost

@sophie
from a technological standpoint bsky is centralised.
What i hate is that the people/company claim that it is decentralised when basically they only offer that the users store their data on their own hardware.
Because of all the venture capital funding i fear that its going the path of enshittification.

BUT currently its perfect for everyone who wants to have the exact same thing as twitter a few years ago

Davey

@Little1Lost @sophie yup.

Surely people who use Mastodon and other Fedi clients should be used to people not caring about the same things as them.

Yonle
@sophie both has bad. But which would you choose? One that only has the good people or the other that has both good and bad people?

It falls into what user needs.
Abbie Archer

@sophie Meanwhile I'm on here posting on Bsky, masto, AND threads simultaneously.

keet

@sophie Ha! My wife and I are in that exact situation with Bluesky and Mastodon. I got the bridge going, but...ugh. The grass is not greener over there. At least she finally moved on from Xitter.

...and NO, you would not want to hear me singing. I'm pretty sure that would violate one of the Geneva conventions.

Sophie

the replies to this message only serving as evidence 😂

It's okay to dislike something! But there's just an extra sprinkling of sanctimoniousness from people

Lulu · לולו

@sophie

I don't think bluesky is bad. The users seem nice and currently it doesn't seem to be doing anything wrong.

It's just that I don't trust the platform not to suddenly turn against me like the other walled garden proprietary social media platforms did.

So, it's bad for me, as in, I wouldn't feel safe there. I have no prejudice against the users or its current state.

Wouter 🛰️

@sophie Boosted on both places. Love both (for a different reason)

There will always be fundamentalists. This is just the new Windows vs Linux.

Some users just get actual shit done 😂

Piousunyn

@sophie Uh, but Bluesky is not Twitter? It is not owned by the Musk, just another asshole?

stux⚡

@sophie I hope they both intergrate more and accept each other ❤️

We need to be happy there's more alternatives for everyone now that Twitter is in such a bad state

I saw embrace ❤️

@stux.u.fail

Squirrelly_Pawn

@sophie so far I see the technical bloggers on this side of the tracks to be better. The other side has a bit more novelty and diversity of types of people, but the algorithm serves me waaaay more politics

Riko :veripawed3:

@sophie From my experience it's mostly people on Mastodon critisizing that Bluesky doesn't solve the structural problems that led Twitter down to where it is now and people on Bluesky not talking about Mastodon at all.

trashHeap
Two households, both alike in dignity,
On the internet, where we lay our scene...
Boris

@sophie Some people on Bluesky already have lots of followers on their mirrored account via fed.brid.gy/ (like @tomgauld.bsky.social), does it count?

Will is too honest to be an MP

@sophie I have a slightly different take:
Mastodon has huge advantages over Bluesky, but I'm still happy if someone is on BS, as they're off Twitter.

Torsten
@WilliamNB @sophie I'm using (reading, liking, commenting, sharing...) #Mastodon #Threads #Bluesky #Peertube and #Pixelfed from my #Friendica account. No need for a fedi bridge here =) Just an addon the admin of my friendica instance has installed.
Pengilly

@sophie I wonder if there's any anthropomorfic about Bluesky and Mastodon's inevitable enemies-to-lovers arc...?

FinalOverdrive

@sophie Except Mastodon is both the Jets and the Sharks, and BlueSky is the mob.

MadeInDex

@sophie 😅

Only saw #Mastodon users negatively mention #Bluesky, not the other way around 🤷

Who could hate mammoth #social? ;) 🐘

Leah :spinny_cat_trans: :verifiedcat:
@sophie omg someone should make that a trans yuri story and the egg falls in love with the cute girlie before they realize they're trans
Jaime Herazo

@sophie
What do they say of Mastodon over there?

Mina

@sophie

Hi hi!

People just love their tribes!

nyx

@sophie never in this world would a Capulet fall in love with a Montague!

lucasvandongen

@sophie I want to like Mastodon but Bluesky seems to be the place where people are connecting nowadays. I have everyone bar two people that I wanted to follow me already following me.

Here?

3 followers

I guess it’s due to the starter packs people connect more easily. Here I’m just clicking people that are followed by people I like. Very laborious and still less people following back.

toosexyforajob

@sophie it s only a shit version of westside story as long as the singing is bad :D

william.maggos

@sophie

I think #bluesky will enshittify and our best way to prepare for that (and discourage it) is to get the networks bridged as much as possible. give people a way out that maintains as many relationships as possible. to do so, we have to educate and fight the culture you reference above.

Branwen74

@sophie And who will write the music that will accompany this love story.

benx

@sophie

I want to know more about what the Bluesky people are saying about Mastodon.

benx

@sophie

Searched for "Mastodon" on Bluesky and your post there was the first result. The replies are insightful.

benx

@sophie

I'm not angry at Bluesky users, I'm just disappointed.

Some Kind Of Garf

@sophie yeah, nah. Miss me with that venture capitalist rug pull waiting to happen.

DarkAgesv2

@sophie
I don't spend time on, nor will I bridge to, Bluesky because it has all of the early warning signs of becoming X-like.
I don't think it is bad.
It is just not ready for the growth it has been experiencing.

DELETED

@sophie Like many people started using both after 2024 US presidential election. #Mastodon and #Bluesky are like #Hoka running shoes—great shoes, but will never be as widely popular as #Adidas or #Nike shoes

And that’s my take on both of them

aismallard

@sophie what even is the bluesky take on why fedi is bad

Gatekeeper....Harris BLUE WAVE

@sophie
Fuck BS, cross posting will get you blocked. These morons pass us up for the Russian run crypto jerk? I don't think so.

Adam Jacobs

@sophie Well my wife has just joined Bluesky. Now the only way we can communicate is to talk to each other.

Tatjna

@sophie I use both and they're both great but in different ways.

Marcos

@sophie 🎵I like to be in the Fed-i-verse! 🎵

John Breen

@sophie Bluesky is fine if it's federated. I'd just rather pay my Mastodon instance owner $22/mo than be harvested as a product by the Bluesky owners, or any other "free" access-controlled proprietary platform.

mcSlibinas

@sophie now bluesky is good, actually. Just like twitter before Musk.
But there will be Musk or similar for bluesky.
Definitely.

Jenny :bf_trans:

@sophie To be fair, most fedi users agree that Mastodon is Bad, Actually, and those of us who were on BSky before it started blowing up have been constantly warning the newskies about how Bad, Actually that place can be.

Luis Villa

@sophie OK, but is it the OG WSS or the remake? (And also the choreography is going to be spectacular since everyone involved is a furry)

lopez 🐞

@sophie I've never used bluesky, can anyone tell me why people think its so bad? 🤔🤔

賢進ジェンナ

@sophie I'm trying to communicate over a bridge, but it isn't working and not with anyone I'm interested in dating.

John_Loader

@sophie Ihave accounts on both but no idea how to bridge

Andy Garber: Ascii Art

@sophie Depends if the platforms have similar jazz handshakes in their communication protocol.

PoliteRiot

@sophie If there is a choreographed dancing knife fight I'm in.

Jef Poskanzer :batman:

@sophie I hope we are the Sharks, Bernardo's outfits are so fine

Robert N. Douglass 🇺🇸🇺🇳🇺🇦🇷🇺

@sophie I joined both BlueSky and Mastodon within a week of each other. Curious to see the differences here, but since I joined I've noticed a sharp movement of the needle to the Right on TwitterX -- thanks Elon! Fcck you very much.

Train YIMBY 🚂

@sophie
🎶
he was a BSky user
she was a Mastodon user
Can I make it any more obvious?
🎶

Dźwiedziu

@sophie Also we need to be ready to take them in, when the BS inevitably enshittifies itself.

Natalia 🪴

@sophie It's like we all collectively forgot that monopolisation and concentrating all discussions in one app started all of this mess. Diversity is good and if we can make a way to communicate between platforms then it's even better.

🍁 Nataly M 🍁 :mastodon:

@sophie

I'm glad I found this post.

What is the Fedi bridge? I ask out of simple curiosity 😁
