It’s like a shit version of West Side Story. how long before a Mastodon user and a Bluesky user fall in love while communicating exclusively over the fedi bridge

@Kilian @sophie Every time I see this Romeo & Juliet thing about which social medium is the hottest and the bestest and the most responsible, I think of the wise words of @adactio who wrote: "they’re all just syndication endpoints to me" @paul @Kilian @sophie @adactio a proper fediverse syndication however is not via copies. Instead your own blog becomes a fediverse publisher and integrates natively. This means for example that people can comment on your articles directly on their own instances and you can reply from your own blog. I just set this up this week in my end https://dbzer0.com/blog/this-blog-is-now-federated-natively-to-lemmy/ @hazz223 @sophie Because @LilithElina Really depends on the way you do it. I've seen some apps are coming out that enable cross posting, all feeds combined, and more. @hazz223 @LilithElina If both sides use https://brid.gy they're able to communicate. You don't need an app for that and you don't need a second account. @LilithElina @hazz223 We're talking about two people in love "communicating exclusively over the fedi bridge". @katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina so if i use brid.gy, do i open up a portal of evil to my home instance? i'm not quite clear on the techy details. @rothko @hazz223 @LilithElina No other users on your home instance or any other instance are affected if you bridge your account – unless they bridge their account, too. If you boost a post of an un-bridged account, it won't show up on Bluesky. It's strictly opt-in. @rothko @hazz223 @LilithElina Just compare my bridged profile page https://bsky.app/profile/katzentratschen.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy with my original profile page https://mastodon.social/@katzentratschen Moreover, only public posts are bridged. @katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina thank you!!! a group of old friends on FB is ditching it for bluesky and i'm all thanks but no thanks. this is helpful. @katzentratschen @hazz223 @LilithElina so if i boost a post from someone over here, will it show up for any bluesky users that follow me here? @rothko @hazz223 @LilithElina If and only if this someone bridges their account. Therefore OP's post doesn't show up on Bluesky. @hazz223 @sophie it's the LinkedIn/Fediverse crossposters that tickle me. @jasongorman posting provocative software engineering questions that work just as well here as on LinkedIn @jackeric @sophie @jasongorman What I think would be cool is if eventually there wasn't as much of a need for cross posting. If everything is federated together then you could post Software Engineering content from your Mastodon account and people on LinkedIn could interact @wesley @sophie @jasongorman the last thing I want is for my LinkedIn contacts to access my Mastodon posts lol there is a very select crossover @sophie people who think the other platform is bad for sure are going to think that crossposting is also bad. @sophie currently listening to this. I wish we could all just get along https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/decoder-with-nilay-patel/id1011668648?i=1000650348585 @sophie Can't we just turn on federation and everybody lives in their own instance but can chat with each other? Is this too much to ask? 😢 @lianna @ricard @sophie I heard that so many times when Meta "wanted" to open up threads to activity pub. You can not EEE a network that is not relying on venture capital to exist. If they opt out we go back to where we are now. I don't see a problem in that. The reality is now, that meta pretends for like a year to open up for federation but they don't really do it because they don't want people inside to know that there exists a whole #fediverse outside. @TheGymNerd @ricard @sophie You are ignoring the likely possibility that a lot of people will begin depending on their add-ons and proprietary extensions for their user experience, and if they rug-pull out of there and "opt-out", then people will be forced to follow. Many will. @sophie "... But what finally brought them together was a mutual disdain for Threads..." I am writing fic based on this very thing! Needed to exact my creative energy somehow! HA! @toychicken @sophie @sophie Ask not what Mastodon can do for you, ask what you can do to improve the Mastodon experience. All people communicating is a bane to the incoming administration. @sophie yeah, I don’t get the elitism of it all. Use what you like, use them all if you want, but stop worrying about what everyone else is using. @cassem @sophie Scraping the web gets vastly less usable results than having access to actual structured information like post time, boosts, connections to other profiles, posting behavior and so on. I do machine learning for a living. I wouldn't even attempt using web-scraped social data for analysis unless I was only looking for the simplest metrics like word count. @cassem @sophie I am just suspicious of people who make the conscious choice to go to a corporate, for-profit social media site run by shady crypto and AI investors, when the Fediverse is and has been right here for more than a decade. That's a decision they make, and it hints towards them being bad people. I'm actually seeing this way more between Threads and Bluesky right now. Me watching both bickering via The Bridge and Threads Federation. 🍿🍿🍿 🤣 @sophie BlueSky = Sharks Jet Boy Jet Girl The Shark Bites, @sophie who on Mastodon is saying Bluesky is bad? It's just that Bluesky refuses to join the same community that Mastodon and so many other applications (like peertube, Misskey, Lemmy, pixelffed...) are using so why should we here in the #fediverse care about Bluesky? @sophie taking a trip and due to snow they have to stay overnight at Threads and there is only one bed. @sophie I don't think Bluesky is bad, it is at risk. Though the AT protocol supports federation, Bluesky itself is non-federated, basically a single feed with its own moderation and block policy. It could be taken over in the future, commercialised, and politicised like Twitter was. It's like a Mastodon with only one server, where the protocols are incomplete and subject to change, which discourages anyone from building a compatible service. This may change in the future, but for now that's it. @sophie What exactly is BS's objection to Mastodon? I've never heard anyone level legitimate criticism of the platform. Like, yeah, it's different, it's not sticky, it's not algorithmically hacking your brain. That's like saying "pepsi is bad because I'm hooked on coke". It's a personal preference. @Little1Lost @sophie yup. Surely people who use Mastodon and other Fedi clients should be used to people not caring about the same things as them. @sophie Ha! My wife and I are in that exact situation with Bluesky and Mastodon. I got the bridge going, but...ugh. The grass is not greener over there. At least she finally moved on from Xitter. ...and NO, you would not want to hear me singing. I'm pretty sure that would violate one of the Geneva conventions. the replies to this message only serving as evidence 😂 It's okay to dislike something! But there's just an extra sprinkling of sanctimoniousness from people @sophie the only relevant take on this: https://tech.lgbt/@MiaWinter/113514622684627656 I don't think bluesky is bad. The users seem nice and currently it doesn't seem to be doing anything wrong. It's just that I don't trust the platform not to suddenly turn against me like the other walled garden proprietary social media platforms did. So, it's bad for me, as in, I wouldn't feel safe there. I have no prejudice against the users or its current state. @sophie so far I see the technical bloggers on this side of the tracks to be better. The other side has a bit more novelty and diversity of types of people, but the algorithm serves me waaaay more politics @sophie From my experience it's mostly people on Mastodon critisizing that Bluesky doesn't solve the structural problems that led Twitter down to where it is now and people on Bluesky not talking about Mastodon at all. @sophie Some people on Bluesky already have lots of followers on their mirrored account via https://fed.brid.gy/ (like @tomgauld.bsky.social), does it count? @sophie I have a slightly different take: @sophie omg someone should make that a trans yuri story and the egg falls in love with the cute girlie before they realize they're trans
@sophie I want to like Mastodon but Bluesky seems to be the place where people are connecting nowadays. I have everyone bar two people that I wanted to follow me already following me. Here? 3 followers I guess it’s due to the starter packs people connect more easily. Here I’m just clicking people that are followed by people I like. Very laborious and still less people following back. I think #bluesky will enshittify and our best way to prepare for that (and discourage it) is to get the networks bridged as much as possible. give people a way out that maintains as many relationships as possible. to do so, we have to educate and fight the culture you reference above. Searched for "Mastodon" on Bluesky and your post there was the first result. The replies are insightful. @sophie yeah, nah. Miss me with that venture capitalist rug pull waiting to happen. @sophie @sophie @sophie Well my wife has just joined Bluesky. Now the only way we can communicate is to talk to each other. @sophie Bluesky is fine if it's federated. I'd just rather pay my Mastodon instance owner $22/mo than be harvested as a product by the Bluesky owners, or any other "free" access-controlled proprietary platform. @sophie now bluesky is good, actually. Just like twitter before Musk. @sophie To be fair, most fedi users agree that Mastodon is Bad, Actually, and those of us who were on BSky before it started blowing up have been constantly warning the newskies about how Bad, Actually that place can be. @sophie OK, but is it the OG WSS or the remake? (And also the choreography is going to be spectacular since everyone involved is a furry) @sophie Depends if the platforms have similar jazz handshakes in their communication protocol. @sophie I joined both BlueSky and Mastodon within a week of each other. Curious to see the differences here, but since I joined I've noticed a sharp movement of the needle to the Right on TwitterX -- thanks Elon! Fcck you very much. @sophie |
There’s also a third subset of people who say cross posting is bad, to which I say “cool”
