Mastodon is benefitting from the #X exodus (eXodus?) too: The official app downloads are up 47% on iOS and 17% on Android. Sign-ups are up approx. 27% compared to previous month with about 90K new accounts, while the MAU has jumped to 894K (across all Mastodon servers).

@Gargron Nice to see it's not just Threads and Bluesky, good for the internet as a whole to not stick to one!

Eugen Rochko

We may not be the biggest by numbers yet, but Mastodon (and the fediverse) has proven itself to be an effective and reliable communications platform over the course of the last 8 years, and does not depend on venture capital to survive. The #fediverse is the future.

Keith

@Gargron More confident we will still be here in 10 years than the alternatives. So thanks.

Albert Cardona

@Gargron The Fediverse is, also, and thankfully, the present.

Ryne Hager

@Gargron Would be kinda cool if the future had some of the features all the other platforms have today, though.

Eugen Rochko

I spent 25% of my life working on Mastodon. It's kind of wild when you think about it. When I started, Google+ was still around. We're doing what one of the most resourceful companies in the world couldn't do. It's not easy. It's always easier to just build A Website, then slap some ads on it. But the fediverse is the long game.

@Gargron

I'm telling you, my experience here has been amazing. I have no reason to go anywhere else. I love the dynamic of the #fediverse I have no complains. You cant get a more organic experience than here in the fediverse.

@Gargron The long game might just win, in the end…🙏🏻

David Schmidt

@Gargron Thx for all your efforts. I was late to the game, but later, I believe, I will still be reognized as an early adopter. More and more people understand what's it all about.

@Gargron this is how I see it too. No matter what happens: Mastodon will always be around. Twitter can just go offline any day now.

@Gargron And we thank you for what you've done and what you're doing! ❤️

Thank you for this place, and thank you @stux for a wonderful instance!

@Gargron or… wouldn’t do. Nothing about google+ made intuitive sense, but it did make you feel trapped in a corporate hamster wheel with no sense of reward or connection

@Gargron Thank you! I am enjoying interacting with people from all over the world on Mastodon. I appreciate what you've created!

@Gargron Diggi, du weißt gar nicht wie ich glücklich ich bin, hier zu sein. Danke!

@Gargron Thank you...The fediverse, and Mastodon, have a sort of a 'Field of Dreams' vibe.

'If you build it, they will come.'

@Gargron I preferred Google+ to some of its rivals at the time; Google could do it but chose not to. It was a decent design.

MJ

@Gargron appreciate your efforts put into the alternative view of what true social media can be. Any update on the #Plushtodon s for the U.S. (North America)?

@Gargron Hey bud, keep building.
We' ll get this sick old man off the White House.
Watch out!

@Gargron Mastodon (respectively ActivityPub) can outlive things like Google+ the same way SMTP outlived about a bazillion messengers already: Because it's a protocol, not a product. A protocol can't be just canceled or enshittified beyond recognition when investors are unhappy. As long as anybody is willing to run software that supports the protocol, it will survive practically forever. Which is pretty awesome I think. :)

@gargron
Do you have a plan to keep the whole thing running and stable into the future, I'm not talking about the technical side but the management of the whole thing?
I mean so it's more like the Apache foundation?

Bellison22

@Gargron I am grateful for Mastodon.... it's my sanctuary city

@Gargron If you ever want to hear a good story about social media, there’s a surprising amount of Xooglers/Googlers still very salty about the failure of Google+.

Evan Minto

@Gargron Thank you and every contributor for all the work you do to keep Mastodon going (and growing!)

Dipper

@Gargron Mastodon is the first time that I enjoy Social Media.

moggie

I wonder if not being the biggest is a blessing, really. Those huge numbers come with some significant downsides, such as becoming a much more attractive target for bots and scammers.

@Gargron Thank you for your good work! I've only been here a while, but I've come to believe that Mastodon and the Fediverse are the only hopes for social media as the gathering place for the free exchange of talents and ideas that we idealistically imagined with dial up BBSs back in the 80s. Makes me sad to see people wake up enough to finally leave X and blindly follow the other sheep to Threads and Bluesky. Mastodon is the way.

@Gargron

You have done a great job with it. Any chance we could get public lists and an improved DM method that doesn't confuse the masses?

Chumchum Tumtum

@Gargron while I agree with your statement, your willingness to cooperate with Meta troubles me deeply

Annie

@Gargron Yes, and we're not here to be the biggest or the most successful platform. No need to compare ourselves to the others all the time. The people who are here enjoy it because it's good. We will keep on growing anyways.Thanks for your great job! 🙏🏽💖

@Gargron
I love Mastodon. It's very useful for getting important information. So many people curating the news from many sources.

The Animal and the Machine

@Gargron
Mastodon is a rock. A Giants’ Causeway of a rock. Thank you.

It is said that people always do the right thing… after trying everything else first. I wish everyone well on Bluesky, although to me it feels like they secured their AOL Keyword and not their domain.

I see this ending with Bluesky switching to Mastodon standards and just becoming another federated server.

Jan

@Gargron Yeah, healthy growth is better than hyper growth.

Mark T. Tomczak

@Gargron Good news! I've been advocating for people to bridge if they're comfortable with it; it's one of those things Twitter specifically didn't allow so I'm hoping people can see how nice it is to be out of a closed platform.

Allgeier

@Gargron
Thank you very much for what you have done, but the comparison with a website is unfortunate. Websites have a half-life of three years.

Athavariel

@Gargron
Growing slow but steadily. Usually the better and sustainable way to grow. This is the way! #Mastodon #Fediverse

Lauren Wu (Kayna on TFT)

@Gargron I'm so impressed with what you've accomplished, especially on a shoestring budget.

Keep up the great work!

@Gargron

No you see I must push the narrative the fediverse failed :poutty-face:

Jonathan Rose Dunlap

@Gargron Mastodon is an inspiration of a better future for our online social spaces.

Now is the time to work hard and polish what needs to be done to compete with Bsky. What do you think is the biggest feature/quirk holding Mastodon back from the mainstream? Google Trends is showing a problem here.

Jenna Lane

@Gargron All I've heard about this week is Bluesky and Threads but nothing about Mastodon, so this is very comforting. I truly wish more people would sign up here and give it a try. Granted I'm told the same thing about the others which I don't have accounts on lol.

Lou Reynolds

@Gargron, yes, thank you for your foresight/tireless efforts. Getting user signups is important but not sufficient to help this platform take off. We need more organizations/people with large followings to set up servers. This has a compounding effect. These organizations/individuals, in turn, invite their communities to join them. This will help new end users find a comfortable home very quickly (one of the big hurdles for many) before they venture out into the wider fediverse.

fmc01

@Gargron Watching the worlds richest man (and front man for Xitter) fawning over Donald Trump to get a taxcut is as as demeaning as you can possibly get. It gets harder and harder for those remaining on Xitter to maintain their self respect.

Raul Portales

@Gargron it's November 2022 all over again, there's a good amount of people that'll stay

James B Toy

@Gargron is there a corresponding decline in Brand X usage?

Brian Ness

@Gargron I appreciate you and what you have accomplished.

@Gargron Can anyone here help me to build my Fediverse. Network. I am trying my best to understand but I really have some questions. Can any one care to answer.

underflo

@Gargron I never liked Bluesky. It just seemed too spammy.

@Gargron It isn't just there. @threads is seeing a fair number of defections, and lots of early-adopters are noticing huge erosions in their "follower" counts

A.K. Tan

@Gargron Glad to see it. The internet should go back to its roots of being decentralized. The web feels so much bigger when there’s a plethora of options to choose from.

@Gargron 47+17=64. Where are the missing 36%?

@Gargron While bsky seems to be primarily used via their official app, I have the feeling Mastodon is used comparably more often via third party apps. The numbers may not tell the whole story.

Fabian (Bocchi) 🏳️‍🌈

@Gargron do you have any numbers for the connected Fediverse? Blockiverse instances don't add much of value.

Diego Aguilar

@Gargron hopefully this platform is more censorship proof

Matt Keith

@Gargron I hope so. This is a good platform for technical people and topics but most of my normal friends are joining bluesky, and so far no adoption for the bluesky bridge

Bullwong

@Gargron Glad to hear, & thanks for all your hard work on it! I heard about it in those early days, & it took me a while to get here, but I made it.

> while the MAU has jumped to 894K (across all Mastodon servers).

Measured how? What's included and what isn't?

* Is it just vanilla Mastodon, or does it include variants like Glitch-Soc and Hometown?

* Is it all servers, or just those that opt-in/ don't opt-out?

* Is it all servers found by crawling, or from requests to include instances?

These details matter to how we weight fediverse stats like this.

We've tried to tell you all for years and the response has been deafening silence. At best.
