I spent 25% of my life working on Mastodon. It's kind of wild when you think about it. When I started, Google+ was still around. We're doing what one of the most resourceful companies in the world couldn't do. It's not easy. It's always easier to just build A Website, then slap some ads on it. But the fediverse is the long game.

@Gargron

I'm telling you, my experience here has been amazing. I have no reason to go anywhere else. I love the dynamic of the #fediverse I have no complains. You cant get a more organic experience than here in the fediverse.

@Gargron The long game might just win, in the end…🙏🏻

@Gargron Thx for all your efforts. I was late to the game, but later, I believe, I will still be reognized as an early adopter. More and more people understand what's it all about.

@Gargron this is how I see it too. No matter what happens: Mastodon will always be around. Twitter can just go offline any day now.

@Gargron And we thank you for what you've done and what you're doing! ❤️

@Gargron

Thank you for this place, and thank you @stux for a wonderful instance!

@Gargron or… wouldn’t do. Nothing about google+ made intuitive sense, but it did make you feel trapped in a corporate hamster wheel with no sense of reward or connection

@Gargron Thank you! I am enjoying interacting with people from all over the world on Mastodon. I appreciate what you've created!

@Gargron Diggi, du weißt gar nicht wie ich glücklich ich bin, hier zu sein. Danke!

@Gargron Thank you...The fediverse, and Mastodon, have a sort of a 'Field of Dreams' vibe.

- and we did!

@Gargron I preferred Google+ to some of its rivals at the time; Google could do it but chose not to. It was a decent design.

@Gargron appreciate your efforts put into the alternative view of what true social media can be. Any update on the #Plushtodon s for the U.S. (North America)?

@Gargron Hey bud, keep building.
We' ll get this sick old man off the White House.
Watch out!

@Gargron Mastodon (respectively ActivityPub) can outlive things like Google+ the same way SMTP outlived about a bazillion messengers already: Because it's a protocol, not a product. A protocol can't be just canceled or enshittified beyond recognition when investors are unhappy. As long as anybody is willing to run software that supports the protocol, it will survive practically forever. Which is pretty awesome I think. :)

@gargron
Do you have a plan to keep the whole thing running and stable into the future, I'm not talking about the technical side but the management of the whole thing?
I mean so it's more like the Apache foundation?

@Gargron I am grateful for Mastodon.... it's my sanctuary city

@Gargron If you ever want to hear a good story about social media, there’s a surprising amount of Xooglers/Googlers still very salty about the failure of Google+.

@Gargron I appreciate you and the open source future for all that you have inspired us to strive for!

@Gargron I began using the internet when there wasn't an internet and you had to keep a dozen floppies on hand in case you needed to reinstall windows 3.x

@Gargron Do you make money somehow through Mastodon, or is this basically your time being devoted to a just cause?

@Gargron it's wild that it's been 8 years, still feels like mastodon just started

@Gargron I'm so very thankful for all you've done!

@Gargron THANK YOU! This is the last social media I trust.

@Gargron Thank you for your commitment. It’s a wonderful place.

@Gargron I'm grateful you spent, and continue to spend, your energy for good. Evil requires just as much devotion. Our newly elected 🍊 leader first set out for the post in 2000. He never would have made it there without the help of other evil doers, notably, Mitch McConnell, paving a path to destruction by stacking our high court. He was at it even longer. Good, Evil, it's a choice. Thank you!

I mean to be fair Google quits anything that doesn't make them a billion dollars/year.

@Gargron let’s keep doing the slow-thing; a true social net will be built at a different pace, in a more social way.

@Gargron Super, und vielen Dank. Ehrlich. Wann Drüko?

@Gargron thanks for your dedication and hard work.

@Gargron TY for all your hard work. I believe it is paying off. I left #twitter in 2017 but went cold turkey. Tried #bluesky earlier this year but after a week I deactivated because it felt the same as twitter and I left twitter because of how bad it made me feel. A few weeks ago I decided to try mastodon and it hits different. I'm not steeling myself before opening the app. I'm still getting a feel for it but I'm I haven't left yet and don't intend to any time soon. Long live the #fediverse

Kevin Rothrock

@Gargron Keep up the amazing work, please! Love it here!

@Gargron I've been here 2 years now and apart from the little glitch with the penultimate update which caused it to crash (which you quickly sorted - many thanks!) I've had no problems. I've blocked and muted very few accounts, which says a lot about it's users and to press gained 1800 followers. Cesspit Central on the other hand, I've blocked and muted countless accounts, many of which are ads and getting followers is like pulling teeth.
Long may Mastodon rule!

@christineburns He also has a disturbing trend of taking women's contributions to the codebase and resubmitting them as if he wrote them.

Ric

@Gargron in an age where multinational corporations backed by ridiculous wealth dominate the industry, it's genuinely bonkers that Mastodon was founded by just a regular bloke and, after all this growth, is still maintained by a small team of actual humans just trying to make a nice platform and not just another money tap.

So yeah, thanks for that! 😊

(if you could maybe make a mobile O/S next please? 😆)
