We may not be the biggest by numbers yet, but Mastodon (and the fediverse) has proven itself to be an effective and reliable communications platform over the course of the last 8 years, and does not depend on venture capital to survive. The #fediverse is the future.

@Gargron More confident we will still be here in 10 years than the alternatives. So thanks.

Albert Cardona

@Gargron The Fediverse is, also, and thankfully, the present.

Ryne Hager

@Gargron Would be kinda cool if the future had some of the features all the other platforms have today, though.

I spent 25% of my life working on Mastodon. It's kind of wild when you think about it. When I started, Google+ was still around. We're doing what one of the most resourceful companies in the world couldn't do. It's not easy. It's always easier to just build A Website, then slap some ads on it. But the fediverse is the long game.

@Gargron

I'm telling you, my experience here has been amazing. I have no reason to go anywhere else. I love the dynamic of the #fediverse I have no complains. You cant get a more organic experience than here in the fediverse.

@Gargron The long game might just win, in the end…🙏🏻

David Schmidt

@Gargron Thx for all your efforts. I was late to the game, but later, I believe, I will still be reognized as an early adopter. More and more people understand what's it all about.

@Gargron this is how I see it too. No matter what happens: Mastodon will always be around. Twitter can just go offline any day now.

@Gargron And we thank you for what you've done and what you're doing! ❤️

@Gargron bless you, your peers, and your important work

@Gargron

Thank you for this place, and thank you @stux for a wonderful instance!

@Gargron or… wouldn’t do. Nothing about google+ made intuitive sense, but it did make you feel trapped in a corporate hamster wheel with no sense of reward or connection

@Gargron Thank you! I am enjoying interacting with people from all over the world on Mastodon. I appreciate what you've created!

@Gargron Diggi, du weißt gar nicht wie ich glücklich ich bin, hier zu sein. Danke!

@Gargron Thank you...The fediverse, and Mastodon, have a sort of a 'Field of Dreams' vibe.

@Gargron I preferred Google+ to some of its rivals at the time; Google could do it but chose not to. It was a decent design.

@Gargron appreciate your efforts put into the alternative view of what true social media can be. Any update on the #Plushtodon s for the U.S. (North America)?

@Gargron Hey bud, keep building.
We' ll get this sick old man off the White House.
Watch out!

@Gargron Mastodon (respectively ActivityPub) can outlive things like Google+ the same way SMTP outlived about a bazillion messengers already: Because it's a protocol, not a product. A protocol can't be just canceled or enshittified beyond recognition when investors are unhappy. As long as anybody is willing to run software that supports the protocol, it will survive practically forever. Which is pretty awesome I think. :)

@gargron
Do you have a plan to keep the whole thing running and stable into the future, I'm not talking about the technical side but the management of the whole thing?
I mean so it's more like the Apache foundation?

Bellison22

@Gargron I am grateful for Mastodon.... it's my sanctuary city

@Gargron If you ever want to hear a good story about social media, there’s a surprising amount of Xooglers/Googlers still very salty about the failure of Google+.

AJ

@Gargron I appreciate you and the open source future for all that you have inspired us to strive for!

@Gargron I began using the internet when there wasn't an internet and you had to keep a dozen floppies on hand in case you needed to reinstall windows 3.x

@Gargron Do you make money somehow through Mastodon, or is this basically your time being devoted to a just cause?

@Gargron it's wild that it's been 8 years, still feels like mastodon just started

@Gargron I'm so very thankful for all you've done!

@Gargron THANK YOU! This is the last social media I trust.

@Gargron Thank you for your commitment. It’s a wonderful place.

@Gargron I'm grateful you spent, and continue to spend, your energy for good. Evil requires just as much devotion. Our newly elected 🍊 leader first set out for the post in 2000. He never would have made it there without the help of other evil doers, notably, Mitch McConnell, paving a path to destruction by stacking our high court. He was at it even longer. Good, Evil, it's a choice. Thank you!

@Gargron let’s keep doing the slow-thing; a true social net will be built at a different pace, in a more social way.

Evan Minto

@Gargron Thank you and every contributor for all the work you do to keep Mastodon going (and growing!)

@Gargron Mastodon is the first time that I enjoy Social Media.

I wonder if not being the biggest is a blessing, really. Those huge numbers come with some significant downsides, such as becoming a much more attractive target for bots and scammers.

@Gargron

@Gargron Thank you for your good work! I've only been here a while, but I've come to believe that Mastodon and the Fediverse are the only hopes for social media as the gathering place for the free exchange of talents and ideas that we idealistically imagined with dial up BBSs back in the 80s. Makes me sad to see people wake up enough to finally leave X and blindly follow the other sheep to Threads and Bluesky. Mastodon is the way.

@Gargron

You have done a great job with it. Any chance we could get public lists and an improved DM method that doesn't confuse the masses?

Chumchum Tumtum

@Gargron while I agree with your statement, your willingness to cooperate with Meta troubles me deeply

Annie

@Gargron Yes, and we're not here to be the biggest or the most successful platform. No need to compare ourselves to the others all the time. The people who are here enjoy it because it's good. We will keep on growing anyways.Thanks for your great job! 🙏🏽💖

@Gargron
I love Mastodon. It's very useful for getting important information. So many people curating the news from many sources.

The Animal and the Machine

@Gargron
Mastodon is a rock. A Giants’ Causeway of a rock. Thank you.

It is said that people always do the right thing… after trying everything else first. I wish everyone well on Bluesky, although to me it feels like they secured their AOL Keyword and not their domain.

I see this ending with Bluesky switching to Mastodon standards and just becoming another federated server.

J.O.

@Gargron All government agencies and public media should use self-hosted Mastodon instances for their customer-facing communication. Won’t happen in the US anytime soon, but I wouldn’t say it’s an unlikely scenario in Europe. When that happens, users will follow.

@Gargron thank you for all of your efforts. We’re here running a single digit open registration server to keep internet cozy and distributed ✊

Bojack Horseman 🗿

@Gargron fix the public feed finally please. this waterfall of unfiltered posts makes sick. imo flagship web app should be polished as hell.

matejrokos

@Gargron @jon Mastodon is a real social network. It is not an advertising app controlled by a single business entity. If it was that you can share text, images and video with other people what makes an app a social network, e-mail would have been a social network too.

Brian Dear

@Gargron

All good. And deserving of our gratitude and support. But calling anything “the future” means it’s not “now” and leaves open any answer to, “so, when then?”

I’m reminded of that great scene in THE CONTENDER where the President, played by Jeff Bridges, stingingly tells an annoyingly ambitious congressman, “You're the future of the Democratic party. And you always will be.”

I worry Mastodon is the future of social media. And always will be.

Digit PaxMentis

@Gargron New here ... but would like to learn more about Fediverse :-) Any hint where to begin, Eugen ? Greetings from NL & Happy weekend. (P.S.: Here about my activities: pomshop.nl/pages/about-us and my own vision: pomshop.nl/manifesto )

William B Peckham

@Gargron Arguably, the Fediverse is also the past. Before the internet there was Fido Net. There are some marked similarities. ( And just so you know, FidoNet is not dead. We may soon have some nodes talking this protocol!)

Griz, Some Guy on Mastodon

@Gargron Originally read that as "vulture capital." Then again, I'm fine with that.

Aleksandra Lesya (she/her)

@Gargron @briankrebs i agree the lack of algorithm is a powerful good thing, i tested bluesky and their algorithm seem to randomly suppress some accounts without real reason.

That can mean 2 things :

1: they have rebuilt the shadow-ban as twitter had.
2: their algorithm is so bugged that you can be silenced at anytime without any way to fix it.

in both cases it’s bad.

Felix 🇨🇦 🇩🇪 🇺🇦

@Gargron I'm pretty sure the #Fediverse is here to stay. It's easy to run your own instance. Like email it's easy to communicate between instances. This is the perfect prerequisite for something that can sustain itself. Even if by tomorrow you decided to stop working on it (please don't 😃 ) it would still continue to grow, I'm sure. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this.
