@davidgerard one note: Patreon claims this new pricing won't affect existing customers, only new sign ups. i would file this under "pray they don't change the deal further" the key message remains: get off the app @davidgerard Something that I don't understand -- maybe you do? I am still on monthly billing. ("You need to switch to subscription billing by November 2025"). Am I and my subscribers currently being fucked over by this new iOS thing? Do I need to warn them about it? Or will the fuckery commence only when they finally force me to switch? @jwz i don't really understand either - the details seem to be unduly confusing. I wouldn't say *deliberately* confusing, but they do obscure the key message: * get the hell off the patreon app * or at least never use it near money what i've been advising my patrons is: bug patreon support about whether you're affected, as much as you feel you need to. i also put a big note at the top of my patreon page saying don't sign up with the app, tho i have no idea if it shows up @davidgerard @jwz Here's a good take (long, but good) on the Patreon situation by an artist who will get hit hard. https://mastodon.art/@JenJen/113392652506020309 @davidgerard Do you know if there's a way for me to get a list of my patrons who *did* sign up via iOS? It would be nice to be able to message them directly to warn them about this. @davidgerard In defence of Patreon having a mobile app: I support a couple creators that post videos only to Patreon and that’s the only way to watch them. Some I want to watch on my TV (they can be over an hour long) which is where AirPlay comes in. @mroach of course, that doesn't actually require an app - it's an artificial restriction @mroach @davidgerard @davidgerard@circumstances.run when a web site drives people to an app, there’s something in it for the operators. Smart money is on telemetry and ads, both of which can be blocked in mere web browsers. Tying features like video to the app “experience” is just a way to get people on the app. Rest assured, I hate all of it ⚠️ This also goes for the Patreon pages for mstdn ❤️ We do not want to give Apple another 30% on top of all they claim already Please do not use the Patreon app for iOS to subscribe |
@davidgerard And to help patrons to do that, configure your account to *add* the apple tax to your usual contributions. No reason to reduce your payment to please apple.
Fortunately the tax addition is the default.
