« But, Nick, you’re not a US Citizen, this election doesn’t affect you ».

Do you know how shit the internet has become since Trump was elected the first time? Do you know how fast and far the quality of online interactions has dropped since that orange fascist opened the gates to let all the trolls from under the bridge?

Anyone who makes content that has even 2% of political notions (and FOSS is definitely political) will be confronted to more brainwashed maniacs and bigots.

That’s not even talking about how the US tends to reflect what happens in the rest of the world. All the crazy conspiracies and imbecilic notions that Trumpists have?

They also arrive in Europe about 3 to 5 years later. We have people fighting against « woke » in France now, even though it was never a real thing in the US, and even less so in France.

We are already going down, fast. This will harm the entire world by ricochet. This election is a blow for humanity as a whole.

Mac Berg

@thelinuxEXP Word. This is a disaster for the planet as a whole in so many ways.

Nick @ The Linux Experiment

And if someone says « but he won the popular vote », I will scream.

Yes, that’s the problem. The problem isn’t that this fringe dictator spewing conspiracies and lies every single time he speaks has SOME supporters.

The problem is that regular, normal people also were convinced by his crazy shit. That’s the problem. Normal people are now falling for this scam, again. More people now think this shit is fine. Preferable, even. That’s what difficult to swallow. Humanity is moronic.

@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social As an American I take a bit of comfort seeing you speak on the issue. Even though I wish that things had gone differently and you wouldnt have to speak about it.

Francesco P Lovergine

@thelinuxEXP
In a few words, populism is popular, and this is obvious. Simply give people what they like. Whether this is real or a lie is a detail.

Idaho

@thelinuxEXP Democracies are failing everywhere in the western world except maybe for Switzerland and a few Nordic countries, USA paves the way for this downfall, what we're seeing with Trump in the USA is gonna be what we'll see in France and other major western democracies in 5/10 years...

RC2225

@Idaho @thelinuxEXP Switzerland biggest strength is that the Government is a directorial system. This vote works however on a purely on social contracts between parties. btw with the SVP we have now over two decade a strong anti migration right conservative party. Even an AFD in the beginning would be a normal party in the swiss political system.

Teop Versant

@thelinuxEXP The problem is the state of America. People are sincerely struggling, and in a bad place emotionally and economically. But they were being told everything is okay. Yeah, everything is okay but we have to choose between gas and groceries - forget medication and healthcare. It is really basic.

Nick @ The Linux Experiment

@Teop_Versant And still, people will vote for the person who will harm them more. They call the opponent a socialist, when only socialist policies would help with redistributing wealth.

They vote for the ultra capitalist candidate to fix the problems capitalism creates. That’s the sad part. They’re shooting themselves in the foot.

Teop Versant

@thelinuxEXP We are not deceived by hate speech. I did not vote because neither party will aid Palestine. But everybody is way over-thinking this. What you do not understand is that many Americans do not even understand what you are saying. It is really basic. Also, why tie peoples personal choices to some form of hatred? Americans are actually more intelligent than people think (IE "swayed" by Russia - lol)

DELETED

@thelinuxEXP studying deep history (10k+ years) - it has always been thus. As the saying goes, history is one damn thing after another... we're not as evolved as we'd love to think.

Gizamaluke

@danberger While that may be true what worries are the use of nuclear weapons. Both candidates seemed to me to be unfit to lead a major nuclear power and actually they are probably unfit for the title of town mayor.

EmpeRohr

@thelinuxEXP well, i am more concerned that this will affect the german elections next year...right wing an conservative government..and they are spitting out lies after lies

Professor Pootis

@thelinuxEXP He didn't even win the popular vote in 2016, the electoral college is bullshit.

Martina Neumayer

@thelinuxEXP And now look.. By definition, voting is a mirror image of the people voting. That is, it shows us what the people themselves are like in a given place. Now you have an accurate picture of the state of practically the entire American society. Of course, excluding some small percentage of exceptions. Unfortunately, this percentage does not count for anything actually.
As the old saying goes.. "Such are the people, such is the country"
And today that's very sad, but true.

@thelinuxEXP Imho, and with utmost respect, taking a look at what's wrong outside Trump's aura might help in getting some clues of what's happening. Might also help for getting over the seemingly unending stupor phase; for searching solutions. Let me share this Stephen Hawking text. Perhaps can provide some wider views on the topic. At least did so for me. Kind regards.

@thelinuxEXP humanity being moronic is evident from the fact that the choice came down to these two in the first place. Having to watch Trump vs Biden was awful, but the coup against Biden and the non-choice of Kamala sealed the whole process for those in the center imo. And those on the far left saw that Kamala didnt do anything except fund Israel and its war crimes

SRKT

@thelinuxEXP Nick but Harris is a genocidal maniac tho. Literally, signed killing of babies in Gaza.

Nick @ The Linux Experiment

@srkt Trump also is on the same side of the issue, and is worse virtually everywhere else. So, yeah. Shooting yourself in the foot or the head?

SRKT

@thelinuxEXP I agree. Eitherway is F'ed atleast with Trump. The americans are F'ed too not just the world. :)

Hagarashi8

@thelinuxEXP If anything, Trumps victory is direct result of Democrat's actions, not humanity's fault.

🇵🇸 Panino, o Moço 🇮🇷

@thelinuxEXP Personally I just hope for the worst, I wish for a civil war, I want that country to go to hell.

No matter who wins the world loses.
The biggest argument the other side had was "he would do worse than what we are doing now", while participating in a genocide.

jame

@paninodesu@mastodon.social @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social I would prefer less war in the world personally, especially when there are already two major ones that are killing millions I dont think we need a third.

🦃 Kat Callahan :chiba: 🦃

@thelinuxEXP

I am so heartbroken, Nick. I voted like six weeks in advance. I reminded. I called. I cajoled. I educated. I shot the shit talking about the real harm that would happen.

But the depths of reactionary, exclusionary politics in the US are apparently very deep indeed. And I don't know how we start to address it.

Nick @ The Linux Experiment

@jezebelkat No idea how to fix that either, it’s not even that people didn’t know better, it’s that they CHOSE to believe what best suited them, no matter the facts or the reality.

Such denial is basically irreparable, I think. I’d be surprised if the USA didn’t implode I to multiple countries in the future. I don’t see this rift ever healing :/

🦃 Kat Callahan :chiba: 🦃

@thelinuxEXP

Such is the way of empires. I would like it to not happen until well after I, along with my friends and family, am long dead. I don't want to live through the suffering that such an implosion would cause.

Corb_The_Lesser

@thelinuxEXP It's a tragedy. People here have no idea what's coming. The door is open to wider war in Europe. People here will die.

It feels like we're two different nations inhabiting the same space and the half that won hates the other half.

thatonecoder

@thelinuxEXP
Almost a hundred years ago, the same happened. Guess what? Many people were *exterminated*, nukes created AND used, and the guy responsible for it ultimately was a coward. This just feels like the 2.0 of it.

C'était Marud depuis le début :mastodont_v2:

@thelinuxEXP well, we have people like Ciotti and it's the demo version of Trump & Co

spughetti

@thelinuxEXP In an official address to the public a couple of years ago, a Dutch parliamentarian also named "woke" as one of the issues facing our country.

It's completely insane how a non-descriptive buzzword basically just meaning anything progressive has dominated a good chunk of Western politics in the past few years.

Nick @ The Linux Experiment

@erin They saw it worked in the US, and jumped on the train!

Shell :fedora: :kde:

@thelinuxEXP Yup. Unfortunately very true, his shit comes floating down.

The chief of the facist paramilitary hindu organization RSS, also talked about "cultural marxists", in India 🤦🏽

Felix Urbasik

@thelinuxEXP Just make your content in French. I don't speak a word of French, but maybe I'll learn it.

It would one *one* way to be safe from US trolls. 😅

Nick @ The Linux Experiment

@fell The French trolls are the same as the US trolls nowadays 😂

Felix Urbasik

@thelinuxEXP
You know, I have committed to "No YouTube November" and I have been feeling a little better lately.

Thanks to #PeerTube, I can still watch your videos, but I also know you won't benefit from it. That sucks.

@peertube needs a taskforce to develop a solid federated
monetisation system. That's the only way to create an alternative to YT which is essentially television these days.

I'm curious: If you earned a little money from PeerTube, what would that change for you as a creator?

Nick @ The Linux Experiment

@fell @peertube Honestly, nothing. I would still upload there, but unless Peertube could generate about 2000€ per month reliably, I wouldn’t be able to move to it exclusively.

If Peertube made me 50 bucks per month, I’d be extremely happy, but that wouldn’t change where the priorities are for me :/

Felix Urbasik

@thelinuxEXP @peertube That's absolutely understandable. I'm honestly glad you're able to live off this.

I don't think it would ever replace YouTube. But I think it could grow into an alternative like Patreon or Floatplane, if it was easy to toss in a coin or two with minimum fees. Imagine I could give you 1€ and you would receive 1€, like a street artist.

Anyways, thank you for uploading there. I know it might feel pointless to you, but I think it's important.

April
@thelinuxEXP @fell @peertube saying this, I was thinking of setting up a peertube instances mirroring the videos of creators i like, for the sole purpose of "archiving / backupping that awesome content to a safe heaven". I don't think ill bend to fascists any time soon.
Jeramee

@fell @thelinuxEXP @peertube

I've been kicking around the idea of starting a video channel. Monetization would help to justify the time spent making videos.

contrapunctus (they/them)

@fell @thelinuxEXP
As someone interested in funding the commons (and interested in making a series of videos myself), I have some questions -

@fell What would this monetization system look like? How would it differ from, say, Liberapay?

(1/2)

contrapunctus (they/them)

@thelinuxEXP Is it possible for you to crowdfund your content in advance? e.g. "I'm _going to make_ a video about $subject, it will take X time and I'd like Y amount for it", or "I _have made_ a video about $subject, it took X time to make and I'd like Y amount for it, here's a teaser."?

(2/2)

Felix Urbasik

@contrapunctus This should technically be possible once the basics have been figured out. Like, how can I send money from my computer to my instance? How can money be transferred between instances? How can instances pay creators?

And most importantly: Who would own the money in transit? Solutions like @Taler would be great, but it would require instances to essentially become banks from a legal standpoint.

Felix Urbasik

Another way would be to initiate a direct instant bank transfer from the customer to the creator by utilising banking APIs like FinTS. However, this would require giving your bank details to your instance administrator, isn't guaranteed to work with every bank, probably only works for SEPA transfers and makes international transfers unviable due to fees.

In my opinion, these are fundamental problems of the web that, if overcome, could impact society quite a bit.

Felix Urbasik

@contrapunctus Coming up with a system like this is no easy task, as there are a lot of factors to consider. Privacy, security, fraud and legal requirements to name a few.

1. It should be as easy as possible to make a payment, ideally without requiring a third party payment processor.

2. It should be viable to pay and receive really small amounts without getting eaten up by transaction fees.

3. It should be flexible enough for creators but rigid enough to not be confusing for customers.

Bobby

It is indeed @fell, like @thelinuxEXP said, wait a few years and it will be here. Qanon started to take off at one point, and we have sovereign citizens here now and plenty of people who lean closer to climate change deniers than the other way, racism is high, and (as already mentioned before) people talking about "woke" as if it were a political movement.

ralen

@bbbhltz @fell @thelinuxEXP i wonder where is the head *looks at his little country that officially labeled lgbt and childfree as extremistic organisations*

Flux

@thelinuxEXP I think a lot of Americans really underestimate the sheer blast radius they create a lot of the time or the fact there even is one.

Since they would likely not experience foreign and cultural policy as an import in the same way.

MikeE

@thelinuxEXP exactly, every shit-for-brain thug with a keyboard will feel even more empowered and entitled.

Alonely0 🦀

@thelinuxEXP Spain's capital is Washington DC, the US government has so much influence in ours it's baffling.

Daniel Brotherston

@thelinuxEXP I hate this response from Americans....leaving aside the fact that I have friends in the US who I would like to see well...the US lost any right to object to outsiders talking about their internal politics, when they inserted themselves into the internal politics of every other country in the fucking world.

@thelinuxEXP
He wanted to nuke a hurricane, that should be an issue to everyone in the world.

Hugo 雨果

@thelinuxEXP The US has toppled my home country’s government at least once. It’s also done massive economic damage to my partner’s country in recent years. It’s been at war with *some other country* almost continuously for over a century.

It doesn’t matter if we don’t live in the US, whatever president they pick will definitely affect us.

Or, as someone eloquently put it “we care about US leadership for the same reason that hostages care about their kidnapper’s mental health”.

Vytautas Butėnas

@thelinuxEXP I just hope, Europe will wake up, and will rely less on the USA.

Commentator2.0

@thelinuxEXP could you be so kind and use the content warning feature for marking things related to us politics?
Thanks

Ketata Mohamed

@thelinuxEXP I will not comment, but I will say that, even though I am not one of the guys on the street screaming about a near end, but comparing the state of the world now & years ago, I can say that humanity kills itself the more in the future they advance

GolfNovemberUniform

@thelinuxEXP that's not just a Trump thing. That's an American thing.

Aleksandra Lesya (she/her)

@thelinuxEXP witch is false as his tarrif and very agressive policy against europe and ukraine will hit us hard on the monetary front

Alberto Scaroni

@thelinuxEXP it does affect a lot.
Without entering the interior US matters, I would say that this election could mark a point of the historical sinusoid of american foreign poltics. From time to time, they move outside, then they go back inside. It happened several times in last two centuries. If Trump will disengage NATO focusing in internal or Asia/Pacific matters, then Europe will start to re-arm itself. And every time that Europe started to re-arm itself, it ended up in bloodwash.

Emil "AngryAnt" Johansen

@thelinuxEXP Different response patterns this morning:
- I bought more shares in green tech on my pension fund.
- My partner filled our emergency rations water containers.

TBF, I _did_ buy those containers in the first place, but the short-term response pattern was still interesting.

TintedKiwi

@thelinuxEXP I just hope that the moronic tangerine and his cabal don’t cause WW3 🤬

Julian 🇺🇦

@thelinuxEXP I am a US citizen and I voted. But I'm just one person and my vote was in California. The truth is that Americans voted for this. They voted democratically to end their own democracy.

Anthos

@thelinuxEXP @thelinuxEXP Choosing Bitcoin is better than choosing between left and right. 😃

Scotty Trees

@thelinuxEXP I’m sorry Nick, as an American today I am embarrassed and beyond regret for what my country did. I don’t know how I’m going to live or survive through this, it’s projected to be even worse than the last time. And I’ll most likely lose my healthcare which is really, really bad in my current situation. It’s all so fucked and the next 4 (or who knows how long..) years are going to show the worst in people. I am not proud, I am ashamed.

Orange Lantern
@thelinuxEXP not to mention what a substantial boost fascists in Europe got the last time he had the wheel. Now they will be going absolutely bonkers.
Darohan :computerfairies:

@thelinuxEXP I'm not from the US either, and God am I tired of hearing "well it doesn't affect you". Yes. It does. My country sees America as the model state, and this outcome means that I can expect a massive right-wing swing in our next major election. I fear for many of my close friends and family when that occurs.

Ryan Lounsbury

@thelinuxEXP Anyone that likes breathing oxygen should be concerned. Trump is going to roll back environmental policy and accelerate climate change.
