@paddyduke It's so bad that I've turned off javascript for all sites by default (using ublock origin) and only selectively turn it on where it's necessary.

R. L. Dane :debian: :openbsd:

@paddyduke

This is so exhausting.

One of the reasons I just use a terminal browser (w3m) a lot of the time.

Isibell 🐩

@RL_Dane @paddyduke so....... you are saying you are terminally online? 🥁

Rob van Kan

@paddyduke I read ever less. Especially on a phone it's just not doable anymore.

Bluedepth

@paddyduke My energy capacity for most sites is zero. The moment I encounter anything that isn’t what I expected, I bail. It’s just not worth it.

Veronica Olsen 🏳️‍🌈🇳🇴🌻

@Bluedepth That's what I do too. I so often follow a link, and just immediately close the tab and try another one.

I just can't with this shit any more.

This, a million times over.

If it’s something I feel I MUST read I’ll turn them off and back on when the article is done. That probably does nothing but make me feel better but that works too!

@paddyduke Sing this to the tunes of No Scrubs by TLC and we have a new #HitsOfTheITs.

@paddyduke and if they really "valued my privacy" they would assume those would be people's preferences unless they explicitly and unprompted decided to opt in.

I don't want your cookies options to be:

Accept all

Refuse all

Look at cookies and decide which ones I want

And then have those options scroll up the screen faster than I can move the cursor to my selected answer. So unless I'm really fast or lucky, I either end up hitting the wrong answer, or the options evaporate before I can answer (and presumably that opts me in).

Yes, Games Workshop. I'm looking at you.

But I'm not looking at your website.

#Enshittification

Book

@davidtheeviloverlord @paddyduke And then some sites which *do* have a refuse all button don't highlight it and some do, leading to click-through obfuscation.

Moz

@paddyduke I just bought a new phone now that 3G is really definitely being turned off. So I've had the "new android phone experience" and I am still grumpy.

The quantity of pre-installed crapware is astonishing. From google, from "sponsored content" and from the phone excretor

Emails telling me I've subscribed to shit I never wanted in the first place.

Google Wallet. Google TV. Google Auto. None of those. But they can't be removed or disabled

Will buy another Fairphone just because of this.

econads

@moz
How about trying to install lineage or another os? Not that I would discourage anyone from buying a fairphone.

@paddyduke

Moz

@econads @paddyduke Sadly I need an android phone for work but now that I have a cheap generic one I'm starting to think that as a second phone and have a proper one to use for everything else. Annoyingly I could have grabbed something from the pile at work if I'd thought of it.

Current phone won't run lineage, but many compatible phones are cheaper than a FP4 (which will also run lineage...). I'm going to stew for a bit longer but I'm leaning towards not-Android right now

econads

@moz
Yeah had lineage on mine for years now! I think they were actually selling with lineage preinstalled as an option at one point?

@paddyduke

Moz

@econads @paddyduke I think they still do, I recall reading about it on the FP forums.

Thinking, the real hassle is the NSW driver license app, the my.gov.au authentication app etc that all require recent iOS or Android. I bought the FP3 to run the covid apps because my then 7-ish year old phone wouldn't. Not having those was very painful.

Shit, need to unregister the auth app before I factory reset my FP3 and sell it.

econads

@moz @paddyduke
Yeah my bf had a similar issue with his banking app. There was some way to get around it, but I think he also ended up going back to android.

Do they not have hardcopy licences any more?

Moz

@econads @paddyduke there's hardcopy licenses, and web banking, but the my.gov stuff *really* want an auth app (and the covid tracing app was a dumpster fire).

I'm kinda thinking I'll keep the new moto phone, possibly as a backup and if it still annoys me in a couple of months buy a fairphone 4 or 5.

I'm now thinking I'll wait a month before selling the FP3 just in case there's another app on it that turns out to be crucial and needs to be unregistered.

econads

@moz @paddyduke
Or just keep the moto for auth and keep the fp as your daily driver.

Moz

@econads @paddyduke the current FP will stop working really soon when they turn 3G off here. Without the telco's choosing to support FP it can't make calls on 4G. Otherwise I'd keep the FP3 until it died.

So it's looking keep the moto and buy a new FP if the moto keep annoying me.

econads

@moz @paddyduke
FP does a recycling scheme where they give you discounts if you send them your old phone. You might get more from selling it though.

Moz replied to econads

@econads @paddyduke only to EU customers :) The cost of posting it back from outside EU is more than they offer...

But as a working phone still supported in EU it's worth more second hand.

Moz

@econads @paddyduke NSW definitely has hardcopy licenses and I prefer it, not least because it removes the temptation to hand an unlocked phone to a police officer.

(your implied right not to give NSW Police full access is very vague at the best of times, but why make it easy)

econads

@moz
There is a big fuss in the UK right now because they want to move to pure electronic visas, which will be a problem if computer says no and people can't prove their right to be in the country.
@paddyduke

burbilog

@moz @econads @paddyduke nowadays second phone for government/bank crapware is a must

Walter_C_Smith

@moz @paddyduke
Or get it rooted with some #Linux as alternative to #Android. But to be honest, I am hesitating to do so because it's not that easy and I'd like to have it simple, but seems the next one will have to be like that from the beginning. 🤷🏼‍♂️

LiverpoolWiz

@paddyduke Absolutely spot on. The only thing I would add is (once you purchase) immediate review. Once before thing had been delivered. Most recently delivery/installation delivered but wouldn't install since delivery co. admin hadn't passed our information to deliverer/installers. I wrote immediately to manufacturer to tell the, Total silence from them, other than an immediate request for a review saying how happy we were...

Just a song before I go
To whom it may concern
Clicking on a related link
It's easy to get burned

When the articles are over
I tried to get back home
And when I hit the back link button
I had to be alone

They helped me with the related link
The ads just hurt my eyes
Driving me to delete it all
And turn off the wi-fi

My computers own security
Can only protect me for so long
They finally got a hook inside
And my data was gone

Just a song before I go
A lesson to be learned
Clicking on a web link
It's easy to get burned

@paddyduke I still remember the pandemic worries about bandwidth, and people trying to attack gamers while using extremely bloated news websites with 40 ads and an autoplay video that would eat up more bandwidth than playing an online game for hours on end.

samreciter

@paddyduke would be nice, if browsers would have something similar like the "no advertising" stickers you can put on your mailbox...

@paddyduke No, I don’t want to rate my experience after a successful transaction.

@paddyduke Ah, so you must want to subscribe to notifications?

Neil Craig

@paddyduke But surely you *do* want to allow them access to your location? 😆

@tdp_org @paddyduke what about push notifications? Surely you want your day to be interrupted every time this site you’re visiting for a single purpose posts a new article.

@paddyduke the other day I helped my mom set up her new computer and it was pretty much the same sequence of questions, but from the OS

I wasn’t sure even I could tell the difference between some of the questions

@paddyduke Use uBlock Origin on Firefox to block most of that. Or use Brave if you don’t mind having to turn off a bunch of cryptocurrency nonsense cluttering up the window. In either case, add a few extra filter lists to block more.

If you don’t know how, find a techie to help. The web is far more tolerable once all the garbage that’s only there for website operators’ sakes, not viewers’, is blocked.
