It's not like I think that me posting this here will change anything, but at least it makes me feel slightly better:

To any tech companies out there: The opposite of "yes" is not "later"

@ggn @tattlemuss @loke I actually work on a platform where a boolean can be true, false or null.

Matt Lacey

@zerkman @ggn @tattlemuss @loke Wow, the fact that X and W are distinct is particularly impressive!

@Lacey @ggn @tattlemuss @loke I have never encountered real life use cases for these 'weak' signal values. Maybe it's used on some mixed analog/digital simulators?

All others are actually useful.

@Lacey
Databases? Booleans are three state logic in some databases. Oracle for one. As you say, true, false or null.

@NormanDunbar @Lacey @ggn @tattlemuss Oh, Oracle and their null behaviour. In Oracle, an empty string is null. Oracle is not short of bizarre features, but this one is one of the more annoying ones.

@loke @NormanDunbar @Lacey @tattlemuss I consider a feature their clause that prohibits the publishing of any benchnarks. And (without having any direct experience with their products) that is the one that really gets me

@ggn @loke @Lacey @tattlemuss Larry Ellison rules at Oracle. What he says, goes, no matter what. And he's rumoured to be a twat! Which might be true given he's also a Trump supporter. 😟

NormanDunbar

@loke @Lacey @ggn @tattlemuss Aye. An empty string is not NULL! Even to use Oracle DBAs. We have no idea why the designers of the database decided that it should be!

@loke The opposite of "yes" is "I will use an open source alternative".

@loke@functional.cafe a concerning number of influential tech people seemingly listen to my (and other's) random shitposts on this platform, I worry about it some days lol

@loke also resubscribe should never be a button for someone who has never subscribed, YouTube.

@loke For a computer language there's other options given boolean logic but for a human the opposite of yes I agree is always going to be no F*ck off.

@loke If you think of it as a creepy skeevy guy, the violations of consent become much more clear:

- “Do you want to have sex? ‘Yes’ or ‘Maybe later’”
- “I have given myself permission to grope you. If you want me to stop, here is a checkbox in a settings panel.”
- “You cannot decline me exposing myself to you permanently but you can pause it for up to 2 weeks at a time.”
- “Why are you upset at me pulling off your clothes? I sent you an email weeks ago saying I can do this, surely you read it, and continuing to be around me means you agree.”
- “I have installed cameras in your bedroom, but until the 15th of next month you can send me an email opting out. After that it’s too late.”
- “You don’t want me to keep texting you? Fine. I am no longer sending you messages about my sexual fantasies but you’re still subscribed to my messages about when/what I think about your body, updates on when I masturbate, my new adult toys, etc.”

@loke yeah

I keep getting this fucking one in android

I want it to just eat shit

Matt Wilcox

@loke ... It is impossible to know why so many leaders of tech companies have issues understanding the concept of "consent".

Impossible.
