 Additional note: It doesn't always seem to manage to figure out the right URL format, e.g. for Meriam-Webster it added it as but their actual URL format is: so I had to manually correct it to: 16 comments
I should have installed Youtube-shorts block sooner, now my subscriptions inbox is so nice and uncluttered :blobfoxfloof_w: Edit: Just occurred to me that I haven't used a Chromium based browser on any of my devices for about a year now :blobfox3c: :firefox: :blobfoxheart: *very slow and deep sigh* "Supported languages vary by browser. You can translate with a microphone in Chrome and there’s limited support in Safari and Edge." First of all: Firefox is not even worth mentioning, apparently. Second of all: why would a browser not support voice input if you're processing it on the back-end anyway?? Sometimes I'm surprised by websites that load "suspiciously" fast but then quickly remember that it's the speed websites should be loading at if they weren't full of unneccessary JS :blobfoxmelt: My favourite piece of proprietary software is probably Total Commander for Android. It's a powerful no-nonsense file manager. Regex file search? No problem. Connecting to a Samba share? There's a plugin for that! Nextcloud via WebDAV? Also a plugin! But if there's an open source file manager for Android that checks all these boxes I'd be interested to know :blobfox3c: TrackerControl from F-Droid is a really nice system-wide tracker blocker for Android that makes you ask questions like "Why does my alarm clock need telemetry?" :blobfoxthinkgoogly: (I like that one alarm app specifically for its power user features so thankfully I can just deny network access to the whole app with one toggle in here) I don't say this very often but A single company owns most of the major antiviruses Oh, there's already a Firefox extension to add the AI-free plain web search mode of Google! Ah... Okay, so one disadvantage of setting your browser's search to be Google's new "Web" mode is the same as its advantage: it doesn't do anything but web results so e.g. currency conversion also doesn't work :blobfoxmelt2: Do I just keep DuckDuckGo? This is great! It's a set of productivity tools (not just) for people with executive dysfunction. The main one is a to-do list where you add a task and it helps you break it down into more manageable subtasks. You can even set how detailed a breakdown you want! It's actually a kinda neat use of language models. |

Today I learned two things:
- Apple puts their bootloader's firmware on SSDs that are soldered to the motherboard
- Windows 11 defaults to saving files to OneDrive
and these are some of the most user-hostile things I've ever heard :blobfoxsnugterrified:
