My favourite piece of proprietary software is probably Total Commander for Android. It's a powerful no-nonsense file manager. Regex file search? No problem. Connecting to a Samba share? There's a plugin for that! Nextcloud via WebDAV? Also a plugin!

But if there's an open source file manager for Android that checks all these boxes I'd be interested to know :blobfox3c:

TrackerControl from F-Droid is a really nice system-wide tracker blocker for Android that makes you ask questions like "Why does my alarm clock need telemetry?" :blobfoxthinkgoogly: (I like that one alarm app specifically for its power user features so thankfully I can just deny network access to the whole app with one toggle in here)

Two screenshots of the TrackerControl app. One shows a list of your installed apps sorted by how many different companies they tried to send data to in the last week. The other shows the settings for an individual app, listing the specific companies and their domains.

I don't say this very often but
HOLY SHIT :blobfoxgooglyholdingitsheadinitshands:

A single company owns most of the major antiviruses

Wikipedia: "Gen Digital Inc. (...) is a multinational software company co-headquartered in Tempe, Arizona and Prague, Czech Republic. The company provides cybersecurity software and services. (...) Its portfolio includes Norton, Avast, LifeLock, Avira, AVG, ReputationDefender, and CCleaner."

This is your regularly scheduled reminder that Windows Defender is a good enough antivirus and you probably won't gain much by installing something more shady

Oh, there's already a Firefox extension to add the AI-free plain web search mode of Google!

Odoben replied to Odoben

Ah... Okay, so one disadvantage of setting your browser's search to be Google's new "Web" mode is the same as its advantage: it doesn't do anything but web results so e.g. currency conversion also doesn't work :blobfoxmelt2:

Do I just keep DuckDuckGo? Its results aren't great, especially for images.

Ooh you can download and run builds of the Servo browser engine :blobfox3c:

It's not Chromium, Firefox or WebKit, it's its own thing

Servo browser running on Linux

CSS is a bit more broken than in Servo, but, behold: Ladybird browser!

My website loaded in a development version of the Ladybird browser

This is great! It's a set of productivity tools (not just) for people with executive dysfunction. The main one is a to-do list where you add a task and it helps you break it down into more manageable subtasks. You can even set how detailed a breakdown you want! It's actually a kinda neat use of language models.
