@pfefferle When do you think we get the first Cambridge Analytica or Rohingya crisis using ActivityPub and the Social Web foundation, seeing as Meta is also a member?

Matthias Pfefferle

@mojala ActivityPub is an open spec, Meta does not have to join a foundation to implement it :)

Jon

That's true. And Wordpress doesn't have to join a foundation to implement ActivityPub. But even though you don't have to, both Wordpress and, Meta and actually have joined the same foundation to partner together to promote ActivityPub. I get it, from Wordpress' perspective the benefits of having Meta involved outweigh the downsides, and presumably you've already factored in the costs of partnering with an anti-LGBTQ+ company with a track record of racism, Islamophobia, enabling multiple genocides and supports fascist and authoritarian politicians ... but, you very definitely are partnering with them.

EDITED to add: at least you're parterning with them for now. Nothing's written in stone! At some point SWF's partners -- who all know better than to trust Meta -- may well decide that the organization is more to succeed holding Meta at arms length instead of embracing them. Time will tell!

@mojala @pfefferle won't happen. One of the goals for the social web is to convince us that our digital footprints should be completely public.

If all of our data is out in the open, there's nothing left for #Meta to protect.

Markus Ojala

@fromjason @pfefferle Just because something is public doesnā€™t mean it canā€™t be used against you. And a fully transparent panopticon is of course something meta could well exploit and monetize.

@pfefferle I look forward to seeing this federated future! Ironically, the main reason I signed up with @wordpressdotcom was because of the #ActivityPub plugin.

I think with a few tweaks, #WordPress could become the super app within the #Fediverse.

I do hope the #BuddyPress & #bbPress teams jump on board, as greater ActivityPub integration could help rejuvenate these social WordPress ā€œprojectsā€ (as they would provide competitive balance against #Facebook & #Reddit).

Tim Chambers

@darnell @pfefferle @wordpressdotcom

As both a Fediverse and a #WordPress developer, I fully agree with Darnell on #BuddyPress and #bbPress being WordPress tech that should integrate ActivityPub ASAP!

Jon

Me too! Great point @darnell and encouraging to hear that BuddyPress is looking at it.

@tchambers @pfefferle @wordpressdotcom

Matthias Pfefferle

@darnell @wordpressdotcom @tchambers I would assume that bbpress already works out of the box, simply activate all the bbpress custom post types in the AP settings.

An ironically I had a discussion with the BuddyPress team yesterday šŸ™‚

let's see how this turns out... BuddyPress will be a really big task!

@darnell @pfefferle 40 bucks a month for a business plan so I can federate my blog? No thanks. I'll just link to it.

David Scott Moyer

@pfefferle @darnell Thank you! I was looking at the plugin. now on davidscottmoyer.com@davidscottmoyer.com

@farbel @pfefferle Welcome to the #Fediverseā€¦again! šŸ˜‚ #ActivityPub support is available for all @wordpressdotcom plans. The only major difference is that I can change my username handle for my #WordPress blogs.

David Scott Moyer

@darnell @pfefferle Thanks! So cool. I am an intermittent blogger these days, but it will be nice to get a bit more exposure for my longer fomat stuff.

Darnell Clayton :verified:

@farbel @pfefferle To each their own, but after comparing @wordpressdotcom plans to less expensive rivals (yes, even #WPEngineā€”before the crazy drama), I realized that I am paying for 24/7 customer service, world class security & unrestricted bandwidth (no limitation on site visitors). Latter is key in case a major #Threads or #Flipboard account links to your blog! šŸ˜†

It is also a way to give back to the #WordPress community by supporting a creatorā€™s platform.

Matej šŸ™

@pfefferle Amazing! Loookig forward to pushing the open social web forward together šŸ”„

@pfefferle I certainly don't trust Meta to have the best interests of the public in mind, and in light of recent events, I'm not sure I trust Automattic either.
I don't know if I can trust @swf with those two companies as major supporters.

Matthias Pfefferle

@thrilway Iā€™m working on a blog post to share my thoughts on the @swf and why I believe itā€™s important, since Mastodon's 500 characters just arenā€™t enough.

@pfefferle
A little less conversation, a little more action, please
All this aggravation ain't satisfactioning me
A little more bite and a little less bark
A little less fight and a little more spark
Close your mouth and open up your heart and, baby, satisfy me
Satisfy me, baby

Matthias Pfefferle

@matv1 I'm just the dev-guy and we still have to prove that the fediverse has more reach than traditional networks to convince PR and marketing!

Matv1

@pfefferle I understand how it works, dont worry. It just annoys me sometimes when I see so many companies and orgs that have a lot to say about a healthy web and socials etc and then see the icons at the bottom of their website.
