Inspired by Google's move to remove @organicmaps from the Playstore without warning, I finally decided to move my > 3,000 Google Maps saved places to Organic Maps. To facilitate doing this for others' benefit, I made a quick webpage to convert your Google Maps GeoJSON data to GPX and KMZ files that render well in Organic Maps.

@rudo @organicmaps Amazing tool! Now I just need a way to redirect clicks on Google Maps links to open them in Organic Maps instead.

Matthew

@mohs @dzso @rudo @organicmaps I'm using Libredirect in Firefox for Reddit and stuff, but I saw it also works with Maps (which Organic Maps should be able to open).

noodlejetski :verified_gay:

@mohs @dzso @rudo @organicmaps that would only work if the rest of the URL remained the same.

LibRedirect supports changing Google Maps URLs to OSM, which I *think* Organic Maps can open.

Dzso

@noodlejetski @mohs @rudo @organicmaps I wonder if there's something like LibRedirect that works with Safari.

Dzso

@bozhkov I gave it a try. Unfortunately it's outdated and doesn't work.

Aleksandra Lesya (she/her)

@dzso @bozhkov what we could do is actually make noise to ask apple to implement something like this natively on the pretend of privacy, if apple do it google will be "forced" to do it like privacy label.

@dzso @rudo @organicmaps
Yeah this is also my major missing feature. It's very hard to shares locations with friends who haven't yet seen the light.

Don't forget to add hashtags so as to make your message more visible ! :)

@rudo @organicmaps Google felt threatened as Organic Maps is growing past 1% the size of Google Maps. Google wants to keep limiting map information and charging for the usage of their data base.

mohs

@rudo @organicmaps danke für den Tipp, mal sehen ob die besser sind als osmand.

MicroBlog Castellano

@rudo @organicmaps Sounds nice, but I would be reluctant to upload my exported google places to a website, since they are likely to contain my home address.

I guess I will run your page from github source, locally.

Jaime Herazo

@microblogc @rudo @organicmaps

This stopped me too. As an aside, one of these days i will have to check how to run Github Pages locally too, sounds like something that would be good to know for cases like this..

Rudo

@jherazob @microblogc @organicmaps The conversion is happening locally in your browser, there is no data being uploaded anywhere. I'll make a note to clarify that.

eh

@rudo Amazing! Thank you for making this!

ScaredyCat
@rudo Can you clarify what's going on with the removal of the app? I've only just found out about it but can still install it from the play store.
PH7831

@rudo @organicmaps By the way.
I could install it this morning on a new Android smartphone from Google play store. 🤷🏻‍♂️

nickelson

@rudo @organicmaps When I was moving to OrganicMaps I used "export to kmz" option directly from google.com/mymaps (after collecting all my saved locations there in one map)

🪨

@rudo @organicmaps Organic Maps was removed from the Play Store? I still see it here, is it localized or did they add it back?

Leeloo

@rudo @organicmaps
Interesting. I converted all my KMZ files to GPX to remove my dependency on Google Earth.

Also, it looks like gpsbabel can convert geojson.

DELETED

@rudo @organicmaps Very cool thanks!
Also may I ask you a question? I'm currently using Osmand~ but I'm thinking about switching to Organic. Is there a big difference between both?

Rihards Olups

@joanam @rudo @organicmaps

There is. I oscillate between the two, as different usecases seem to work better in one or the other.
You might want to try them both for a while :)

econads

@joanam @rudo @organicmaps
I did that some years ago because I found osmand unbearably slow. Organic maps isn't perfect, but I think it's worth making the switch.

Dr Know

@rudo @organicmaps hadn't heard of organic maps, looks interesting

Rosco

@rudo @organicmaps Neat little tool, first time I'm hearing about OrganicMaps!

@rapha3l @rudo @organicmaps @martinsteiger @mho @nohillside @Konsumentenschutz Google is so evil, of course they are capable of crushing any FOSS minnows who dare to challenge the google seamonster. Even if they allow it in their poisonous marketplace, they are intolerable. Ban google.

Also, offline maps can save your life if you are lost in a wilderness with no signal.

econads

@AvonVilla
Or just convenient if your phone provider has a slow connection or your data is limited.

I prefere to contribute via #streetcomplete and #EveryDoor to the #OpenStreetMap than rather support a company that we never now when they change the rules...

Nik | Klampfradler 🎸🚲

@rudo @organicmaps

Somewhat ironic that you convert a free and open format coming out of Google into a proprietary Google format to be imported into Organic Maps…

Is that necessary? Should we open an issue with #OrganicMaps so that GeoJSON can be imported?

Rudo

@nik @organicmaps somebody pointed out that Organic Maps supports importing from GPX, so I'll make that adjustment later.

Jaime Herazo

@rudo @organicmaps
Oh man, i *REALLY* wanna ditch Maps, but right now it's the ONLY app that gives me reliable navigation for public transportation, nothing OSM-based i've seen yet comes even *remotely* close to GMaps on this, OSMAnd is the one that seems to try and get close, but the suggestions are... NOT good, and take forever to compute

D. B. Stuck

@jherazob @rudo @organicmaps

Yep. I used Google Maps to navigate the public transit system in DC. I was surprised at how well it worked with live updates of arrival times for busses and trains. Then again Alphabet has those connections and deals to make it so.

I am playing around with Organic Maps at the moment. My next step is to use it for some upcoming car trips.

Json Doh

@MyWoolyMastadon @jherazob @rudo @organicmaps
Another feature of big tech that would be nearly impossible to implement is live traffic and road closure updates

Jaime Herazo

@jdoe @MyWoolyMastadon @rudo @organicmaps

Gut feeling with these kinds of problems tends to be "Something peer to peer", but i'm but a humble sysadmin so dunno how realistic that gut feeling is

D. B. Stuck

@jherazob @jdoe @rudo @organicmaps

One cool yet spooky aspect of Google Maps is when they tell you how busy a place is due to the number of phone users at a location.

I know I've backed out of visiting one restaurant over another due to what it has said.

@rudo @organicmaps Google maps seems to be available on Google Play.

Maybe it was just a temporary removal?

Google maps download preview from Google Play store
Alex

@rudo @organicmaps I had major problems using Organic Maps in UK since most places I tried to go to werent marked on the map or couldnt be found when searching =/ Had to revert back to google maps, unfortunately(
Hopefully with this tool and large data migrations this will beef up organic maps enough to be usable around the world <3

Organic Maps

@shved @rudo can you please share some examples of non-working search queries here or at support@organicmaps.app ? Are these addresses present/searchable at OpenStreetMap.org ?

Alex S

@shved
There is a bit of a misunderstand here.
Organic Maps relies on OpenStreetMap-data. The data is assembled so the App can download the map-data of a region.

The waypoints and tracks are strictly offline in the App. So to improve the map one must edit it on OpenStreetMap or with an App like StreetComplete. It is also possible to do it in Organic Maps, albeit limited.

@organicmaps

Karol Bieńkowski

@rudo Awesome work! Can you imagine how many people that can be useful to? This is high-impact, imho.

lemgandi

@rudo @organicmaps Hah. Just quick-like-a-bunny installed this on my phone.

Mark Deasy

@rudo @organicmaps

Grateful for your opinion on 'maps to gpx':

mapstogpx.com/

I use this after I plan routes in a containered tab in Firefox (to quarantine the rest from google). Then copy the URL for the route, paste it in to this website, download the .gpx file and then import into OSMand or Organicmaps.

I have not used it to export locations, but will have a go.

Scotty Trees

@rudo here’s a direct link to download your Google maps data since it took me a while to actually find it:

myaccount.google.com/yourdata/

Rudo

@scottytrees Good find! I'm going to add a link to the page. 👍

Cris

@rudo @organicmaps Dude thats awesome, thank you so much for this gift to the world!!

Albert Cardona

@jni @rudo @organicmaps@mastodon.social @organicmaps@fosstodon.org

Thanks! At this point though, ~20 years later, most of my places (largely restaurants) have closed or changed ownership. In some ways they are polluting Google Maps with incorrect data; let's not do that to Organic Maps.

Rudo

@albertcardona @jni @organicmaps@mastodon.social @organicmaps I actually use saved places / bookmarks as a way to remember places I've been to in the past, so for me that's actually a good thing. And in Organic Maps you can show/hide bookmark lists, so they don't always need to be rendering the map unreadable :)

DELETED

@rudo @organicmaps > Google's move to remove @‍organicmaps from the Playstore without warning

wtf?!

aiai_que

@rudo@fosstodon.org @organicmaps@mastodon.social so organicmaps was too dangerous for goo_shit ?

i got it OM installed ; but is it NOW only available by #fdroid ? which had for some reason an tutorial effect on the population / usr

jakob 🇦🇹 ✅
@rudo @organicmaps and it would be GREAT if organicmaps, osmand, streetcomplete could share the openstreetmap map-data... so each app mus download and save their own map-data... many gigabytes for each app separately...
gabriele

@rudo
Suggest to try out also Osmand :)

Markus Sugarhill :breadpats:

@rudo not out of the box to find on fdroid. thanks for hinting towards organic maps! @organicmaps

jack will miss this server

@rudo @organicmaps I used Organic Maps on a recent hiking holiday in Switzerland and the ability to find toilets, drinking water, ATMs etc anywhere in the country and without internet access was invaluable

jan

@rudo @organicmaps
Is there a way to export saved places in 'My Lists' (csv-files) from Google Maps and import them into Organic Maps?

#GoogleMaps #OrganicMaps

Rudo

@jnbrgr @organicmaps I think you get all of the saved lists in the same way as mentioned on the page, by requesting a download of your Google Maps data. How do you get them as CSV? That said, you can convert the CSV to KMZ or GPX too.

jan

@rudo @organicmaps
In Google Takeout
takeout.google.com/
there is a different option, which should be called:
"Saved - Collections of saved links (e.g. images, places, web pages) from Google Search and Google Maps."
By exporting this you will receive in a subfolder called "Saved" all your lists of Google Maps "My Lists", each as csv-file.
So far I wasn't successful to converting and importing them.

Rudo

@jnbrgr @organicmaps I looked at the CSV exports. This is trickier since they only contain a Google Maps URL. One would have to fetch the data (like title, coordinates) from the Google Maps API. To do that, you would have to provide an API key. Doable, but maybe easier as a script (where you provide the API key) instead of a browser-based tool.

Vlad

@rudo Unfortunately, my Google export only gives me a fraction of my saved places (it looks like the starred places only). :(

Rudo

@vladh Yeah, some other people in this thread have pointed that out too. There is a way to get other lists via Google Takeout and using this Python script (with a Google API key): github.com/organicmaps/organic

Google has gone beyond the beyond, giving me reasons to hate them even more. Organic maps is such an important tool in a place like NYC where we have dead signal canyons and not all browsers get connection underground.

i use it on my phone and desktop and wouldn't have it any other way.

@rudo @organicmaps What?! When did google make this move?! I have been an Organic Maps user for the past year

@KhalidFusion @rudo Please read the details in the August news on our website.

@rudo @organicmaps wait what is google doing to organic maps? I have been recommending this to everyone in my motorcycle riding group but I don't use android.
