This is a nice sentiment to share, but i'm confused because of the post it's written in response to. It sounds vaguely like you're saying that, if no one were allowed to own a residence where they do not actually live, then you could not enjoy living in a residence owned by someone whose desire is to allow you a roof over your head instead of profiting from your need to rent. That's probably not how you intended it, but is it? 19 comments
I'm partial to a federation of housing co-ops owned by neighbors, tasked with coordinating distribution and financing development. The one thing that worries me is that they could turn into an HOA-type deal that's nominally owned by the neighbors, but managed in practice by and for wealthy interests. @magitweeter @violetmadder @Daojoan No, I am saying that if the people I was renting from, were not allowed to own a residence they did not reside in, they would not be able to provide me with the housing, with the home that they have provided me with. @violetmadder @magitweeter @Daojoan There is nothing, nothing at all that is "zen" about the perspective that I am offering, let alone "totally zen". Perhaps in your haste to dismiss my perspective with an arrogant, condescending and patronizing response, you felt it was ok to just lean into this lazy habit that people have developed of using the word "zen" as an umbrella term which points to absolutely nothing close to what the word "zen" actually points to. @violetmadder @magitweeter @Daojoan Just to be clear, my perspective is a result of many years of exploring and developing my own world views, and my own ways of being in this world. As incomprehensible, or even as offensive as it may be to you - diminishing it by simply seeing it as being simplistic or uninformed, is neither reasonable or respectful. Why are you assuming that they are using the rent I pay them to save up to buy more houses? Thats quite a narrative you have there, unfortunately, it does not align with my experience. Me - that's who you are talking to here, maybe try to respond to that, rather then broad generalizations. I have no need, nor intention, to save up to buy my own home - I am happy to be a renter. @storyworker @magitweeter @Daojoan The original post is about a broad dynamic fundamental to how our ENTIRE society has been working for centuries. Your personal experience and opinion is all very well and good, but what has it got to do with the discussion of these larger issues? Certainly. No one can rent you a home they don't own. if owning rental homes were forbidden then you could not be a renter, so you would presumably procure a home some other way. What confuses me is that you present this as something to be glad about. Because @violetmadder said things should be different, and you say you're glad for the way things are, it looks like you're saying things should not be different. Do you understand that your post could be read this way? @magitweeter @violetmadder yes, I do understand that I am expressing the fact that I am glad I am able to rent a house, meaning I don't have to buy one. Anything else that you or anyone else wishes to read into that, is not really any of my concern. @magitweeter @violetmadder not everybody feels the need to own the home in which they live. From this point on, we are coming into the domain of invalidating that perspective for others. «meaning I don't have to buy one» I would say this inference is incorrect. “Buy” and “rent” aren't the only housing occupancy arrangements there are. They're the most prevalent by far in societies like yours, but eliminating “rent” doesn't mean “buy” is the only option remaining. Most likely, eliminating “rent” would leave room for many other types of housing arrangements, including some where you don't have to own the home you live in if that's not what you want. @magitweeter @violetmadder I'm happy with the inference, as it is. You're welcome to see it as being incorrect, though, but that's none of my business. I just don't get how having a landlord (how ever merciful they may happen to be) would be better than actually owning one's own home.
Especially under conditions where there are no landlords, such that when people want to move it would be pretty easy and not all that expensive to switch to a different home.
