I just don't get how having a landlord (how ever merciful they may happen to be) would be better than actually owning one's own home.
Especially under conditions where there are no landlords, such that when people want to move it would be pretty easy and not all that expensive to switch to a different home.

I'm partial to a federation of housing co-ops owned by neighbors, tasked with coordinating distribution and financing development.
The one thing that worries me is that they could turn into an HOA-type deal that's nominally owned by the neighbors, but managed in practice by and for wealthy interests.
