I have been asked this, and yes, sign-ups and overall traffic from #Brazil are picking up today, following the #X ban. Bem-vindos ao Mastodon!

@Gargron what are some of the most popular servers for those?

Celinho :catjam:

@Gargron já tô aqui a muito tempo. Twitter e o mastodon tem proposta diferente pra meu uso. 🤪🤣

Ezlin

@Gargron

Wait. They banned the entire country of Brazil from using X?

Or am I misunderstanding?

Ezlin

@not2b @Gargron

Huh. Thanks for the info.

"until it complies with all court orders and pays existing fines"

So basically never.

I can't rightly commented on the rest of that situation. o7

@ezlin @Gargron It is a big country, Musk might decide that making a deal is better than losing the business, especially if defiance leads other major countries to cut him off. Or not, he is a stubborn person.

Ezlin

@not2b @Gargron

Yeah. Stubborn, arrogant, petulant. So it's difficult to say what he'll do. :blobcatgooglyshrug:

Yes, they ordered to block access to the service nationwide and impose huge fines for citizens trying to circumvent the censorship.

@Gargron@mastodon.social @ezlin@gamepad.club Brasil banned X after they refused to compy with the supreme court's rulings and fines

Leonardo Ferreira Fontenelle

@ezlin Brazil banned X from being used in the country, at least temporarily. @anna summarized it in English. In short, there's this judicial process going on (the details are not public), apparently X was not abiding to judicial orders, and then it closed its Brazilian branch to try and evade the consequences. The judicial process is about X providing safe haven to Brazilians who are suspected to be attempting / have attempted against Brazilian democracy.

@lffontenelle @ezlin Yes. Twitter/X closed their Brazilian office and forfeited appointing a Brazilian representative to receive and comply with any decisions from Brazilian authorities. That’s required by law if you’re operating a service on Brazilian internet. It has a lot to do with the aftermath of Jan 8—it was similar to the Jan 6 U.S. Capitol attack.

This news article compares it with Telegram, which was also temporarily blocked until compliant (in Portuguese): uol.com.br/tilt/noticias/redac

@Gargron Wait, Brazil banned "X"? If so, that's AWESOME

Eugene

@gavinisdie @Gargron this is a rise of #censorship . First you blocks X and fines people for using VPN. Next you ban all communication channels of opposition (already going, there is the reason of blocking X in Brasil) and start to persecute their leaders. We already saw these in Russia, now the time for Brasil...

@Gargron That’s great to hear! Welcome to all our new friends from Brazil—excited to see the community grow! 🌍 #brazil #mastodon #welcome

Nemo_bis 🌈

@Gargron Nice, now can we get at least one pt-br instance on joinmastodon.org? ursal.zone is available but has not heard back from you, apparently: ursal.zone/@Ursalzona/11305597

wakest ⁂

@nemobis hey @renchap, @andypiper and friends: Can we expepiate getting some Brazilian instances on the joinmastodon page?

Andy Piper

@liaizon @nemobis is there a specific list you want to point me at? I can see what I can do.

Eugen Rochko

Aug 10, 10 sign-ups from #Brazil. Aug 28, 152 sign-ups from Brazil. Today, 4.2k sign-ups from Brazil. Portuguese (Brazil) has already entered the list of top 8 active languages for the last 30 days.

Pug

@Gargron Not nearly as big as the move to Bluesky, but its definitely an increase nonetheless.

Ivan Oliveira Jr

@Gargron Twitter was blocked in Brazil yesterday for not respecting the Supreme Court's order to block far-right accounts for spreading false information and inciting undemocratic acts. I think that the administrators of the instances here at Mastodon should be very attentive to this diaspora.

DJGummikuh

@Gargron is this exclusively for this instance or for the network as a whole?

Extinction Studies

@Gargron

There should be a list of native Brazilian Fediverse instances to make it easiest for our new friends from Brazil to come here and find their communities. I hope that is being highlighted everywhere they are finding homes, 1) that they are welcome indeed, and 2) that we will help them find places they can express their cultural uniquenesses.

Phoenix Gee

@Gargron I just started getting traffic warnings from my Bluesky PDS, and Mastodon is a close second. Holy crap!

Eniko | Kitsune Tails out now!

LB: so much for "fedi is dying, Brazilians aren't coming here after the twitter ban!"

Zephod Beeblebrox

@Gargron Might need a few more Brazilian instances then?

deutrino

@Gargron of course, the vast majority are going to Bluesky. how does that make you feel?
