Funny, just a couple weeks ago I had a map for the GeoScribble front page. And now I've replaced it with something much more useful.

The map fits the front page only when what you are selling is that map. And every OSMer knows OSM is not a map.

OSM is data + community, and on the front page we have neither.

@zverik I think there have been discussions over the years about going to something more like openstreetmap.fr/

I think the problem with that is that many mappers go to osm.org specifically to see their changes get rendered and making the map smaller is less satisfying when you do that.

@InsertUser yup, perpetuating the notion that OSM is just a map, and hiding the people and the data.

It's like with cycle lanes: unless you build them, you won't see cyclists. How you frame the project dictates what people do with it.

@InsertUser (I'm not proposing to remove the map, just push it further down, e.g. under the /map endpoint. Like openstreetmap.de/ does).

...like it was years ago, with the image of the week on the front page etc.
Would love to see going back to that.

Well, Image of the Week is hard to curate (and it was the wiki), but a simple semi-automatic welcome page with an explanation, list of events, how to use / contribute / contact, would be much better than what we have.

Even the old wikipage might advertise the community more than the map (which is great as well :) ).

As for the image if the week - props to @harry_wood again.

@zverik I've been saying that for years as well. I think welcome.openstreetmap.org/ would be a good place to start from. It wouldn't even need to be integrated in the current website, just move that to osm.org/map
Though a design that integrates both map & non map features like the Czech did openstreetmap.cz would be cool (and perhaps easier to stomach for some folks)

@joost_schouppe Right.

I would hold that welcome mat thought though. I gives me an impression of a store clerk, coming at me with "what can I help you with", prompting an immediate reaction of "no thanks goodbye".

OSM is an active project where things happen all the time. The front page also needs to reflect that by including some dynamic parts, e.g. the event calendar.

@zverik I guess it is a little dry indeed. Now the issue isn't so much creating some decent content, but rather getting a clear mandate on doing something like this. Who gives the go, what are the parameters for community input, when is it good enough
