@zverik I've been saying that for years as well. I think welcome.openstreetmap.org/ would be a good place to start from. It wouldn't even need to be integrated in the current website, just move that to osm.org/map
Though a design that integrates both map & non map features like the Czech did openstreetmap.cz would be cool (and perhaps easier to stomach for some folks)

I would hold that welcome mat thought though. I gives me an impression of a store clerk, coming at me with "what can I help you with", prompting an immediate reaction of "no thanks goodbye".

OSM is an active project where things happen all the time. The front page also needs to reflect that by including some dynamic parts, e.g. the event calendar.

@zverik I guess it is a little dry indeed. Now the issue isn't so much creating some decent content, but rather getting a clear mandate on doing something like this. Who gives the go, what are the parameters for community input, when is it good enough
