Miguel de Icaza

It is now Wikipedia official, after a long and painful debate.

It is a genocide.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza_gen

Sidebar: and it is so, because the US has ensured that it will continue to be funded and will do everything in its power to let it continue.

@Migueldeicaza Congrats. It’s far from “official” but thanks to the online mob deciding it is so, you’ve been able to shut down dialogue.

Jonathan Wight

@josh @Migueldeicaza goddamnit social media this is why we can’t have nice things.

Back in the day you could indiscriminately murder a sizeable portion of a population without those kids on TikTok getting all uppity about it.

Miguel de Icaza

@schwa @josh this guy draws the line at expressions he deems offensive, but is ok with the slaughter of civilians- just don’t call it genocide.

Jonathan Wight

@Migueldeicaza @josh I take blocks from people like that as a badge of honour.

Miha Markič

@josh @Migueldeicaza It's not far, it's what it is. It's genocide in broad daylight enabled by mostly USA and Germany. Other (Western) countries are also complicit. Only the official stamp is missing.

Josh :matzah:

@mihamarkic @Migueldeicaza I'm not going to debate you on this. But I will suggest that you get outside of your bubble and your thought process of, "if I say it is so, it is so," and actually engage with people who are challenging you.

Miha Markič

@josh @Migueldeicaza You mean if I and thousands of dead and injured children, women and other civilians say so?

Miha Markič

@josh is a funny guy. Suggests people to get out of the bubble, but instead of proving his truth, he blocks everybody instead 🥹 @Migueldeicaza

Adriano

@josh @mihamarkic @Migueldeicaza “I’m not going to debate you on this” says guy who jumped in uncalled to debate that Israel is not doing a genocide.

abracadabra holmes

@mihamarkic @josh @Migueldeicaza
It's a pickle.
In 1 hand - Israel is an ethno-religious State
In the other - someone gave them nukes

Arma Bellum

@josh "The online mob" isn't the one dropping bombs in the hospitals they told refugees to evacuate to. Anyone not trying to defend war crimes didn't need wikipedia to tell them it's a genocide.
You chose a weird hill to die on but at least you'll die on it I guess.
@Migueldeicaza

Miguel de Icaza

@josh curious what kind of epistemic pursuit you are interested in, 9 months into this genocide.

But if you are truly interested in the pursuit of this epistemic debate, before you reply, make sure you attach a justification and explanation to my 32-part thread:

Josh :matzah:

@Migueldeicaza Are there people with genocidal intent in Israel? Absolutely. Has Israel's behavior in this war led to a humanitarian catastrophe? 100%. Does this mean that the IDF is waging a genocidal campaign, as defined by the world community (see: Raphael Lemkin)? Not in my opinion. I don't want to debate you because I'm tired of fighting the same empty assertions from people with a limited understanding of the context of this war.

Miguel de Icaza

@josh the international court of justice judges think they have a case.

Going to go with their legal opinion over rando guy on mastodon who thinks I have a “limited understanding”.

Josh :matzah:

@Migueldeicaza Feel free to ignore me! And you're misreading the ICJ. They did not say it's a plausible genocide. They said Israel needs to act to prevent one.

JustCare

@josh @Migueldeicaza Technically, if I remember correctly, the ICJ said that Palestinians have a plausible case to be considered a recognized group, which is a prerequisite for a genocide allegation.

They then said Israel should take necessary steps to prevent a genocide of that plausible group.

Wikipedia is being wildly irresponsible with this article title.

Miguel de Icaza

@josh My bad. I will go with the legal opinions of these countries (including my birth country) rather than your opinion.

Or for added oomph, the second tweet:

FelisCatus

@josh @Migueldeicaza ah yes the famous mob.

Whenever my favourite party wins the elections, that's democracy.

Whenever the party I dislike wins the elections, that's mob rule.

Julian Andres Klode 🏳️‍🌈

@Migueldeicaza Well I guess that means soon the Jewish groups in Germany will call on ISPs to ban the antisemitic Wikipedia and remove charitable status from its German group 👀

Santiago Lema :amiga:

@Migueldeicaza Seems the header already both-sided the truth one hour later !

“For accusations against Hamas, see Allegations of genocide in the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel.”

Sigh.

gavinisdie :troll:

@Migueldeicaza not sure if any Wikipedia articles have been banned in the US before, but I wouldn't be suprised if it becomes the first to be banned in the US

Miguel de Icaza

@gavinisdie my congress representative will likely lead the charge.

Jeff

@Migueldeicaza This has been so heartbreaking. I cannot understand how human beings can continue to do this type of thing to other human beings.

FelisCatus

@Migueldeicaza "funnily" the French version of the article is "Allegations of genocide during the Israeli attack on Gaza in 2023".
