Gregory's ServerI've seen a Black-identified account recently mention a high level of racist posts in their timeline, but I couldn't see it. Recently I started using the option on some posts to message only the account mentioned (when it's something sensitive like "hey, you might want to use alt-text"). I only just realized that's what's happening: bad actors are using this feature for various types of harassment. Something you folks might want to think about. @Gargron

I'm not sure that would he the most constructive reply if that was all you said. It would have the effect of shutting down the conversation, meanwhile the person would still be getting bigoted replies and might feel silenced. While it is worth acknowledging the fact the devs are working on stuff, the wider issue of racism on the fediverse is too nuanced to be solved by this alone, so IMO more discussion should be encouraged not shut down.  |
@jawarajabbi @Gargron Yeah that is concerning, we at @pixelfed are working on Comment Controls, and I know that is something Mastodon is working on too.
As developers, we can't ignore threats like these, and while I understand some projects may not have the resources to implement this as fast as the community would like, it's crucial to understand the constraints in the protocol that can prevent implementations like this, unless all software is on board.
