@halva Dude they made dearrow for books

Sqaaakoi :flagEnby:

@halva AI that puts English teachers out of a job

tillian 🦊🦇🇵🇸:antifa: ACAB

@halva it's channeling that twitter post where some asshole used ai to finish keith haring's intentionally unfinished painting

MaxTheFox

@mynameistillian @halva Jeez. I'd understand it for nonfiction (same reason I often use Simple English wikipedia for things I don't know much about) but I don't see the point of this. Plenty of books written in easy prose...

Flesh 🐀

@halva Honestly, a reasonable use case.
It's quite possibly AI shite and that part still sucks, but at least that could be helpful for some people.
Maybe not as "rich" and flavourful as the originals, but could be useful for people that would otherwise have issues reading the books.
(Though, of course, would be much better if it was done with properly paid intelligent editors)

botwiki.org

@flesh @halva Yes, putting the environmental impact aside for a moment, not being able to rely on this technology renders it pretty useless.

I do agree that this is a valid problem to solve, but current "AI" is not the right tool. It's the same thing with blind people relying on these for describing images:

mastodon.social/@stefan@stefan

Also, consider that we have simple.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Si

@botwiki @halva
"Yes, putting the environmental impact aside for a moment, not being able to rely on this technology renders it pretty useless."
That took me longer than it should've to actually parse properly.

Johanna Janiszewski

@CAETFOOD @halva omg how did you put that cute possum after your name 🤩

Panegyr 🤡🎪

@JohannaMakesGames @CAETFOOD it’s an emojo on plush city so they can use it in their display name :neofox_magnify: there’s tons of variety in emojos on an instance to instance basis

Johanna Janiszewski

@panegyr @CAETFOOD thanks, I wasnt aware that instances have different emojis 😮

SPICY EVIL TINY 🎄:yell: 🎃

@JohannaMakesGames @halva it's an emote! The emote is :yell:

You could ask if it can be added to your instance

Natasha Nox 🇺🇦🇵🇸

@CAETFOOD @halva Can not relate. 🤨 This makes a book even less interesting.

Empathic Qubit

@halva
I would use this for German, since my level isn't great, but I don't want to read children's books

Taurus :ms_18_plus:

@empathicqubit @halva many ebook readers have build in dictionaries.
Read the original and for every unknown word tap it and the dictionary pops up. It's really fast and fluid. Way faster than going to linguee or dict.cc on your phone.

I use that.
I only have english installed since that's the default on my device

Taurus :ms_18_plus:

@halva i like how the example is how they show beautiful prose being turned into joyless corpse of a text.

Really we should replace van gogh starry night with just a tree emoji and three star emojis then it would be that more of an artwork

spubby

@taurus @halva i love starry night but it looks so fuzzy, we should use ai to sharpen it up and make it look more realistic

Cat Herder

@taurus @halva

No shit. My children didn't become great readers by stopping at the Clifford the Big Red Dog books. This idea is an affront to expanding your mind. Sounds like the newest iteration of dumbing down America.

xenia :blobfoxmegumin: :freebsd:
@halva
>puts in yaoi story
>sets to simplest option
>4chan greentext fagslop
:blahaj: Why Not Zoidberg? 🦑

@halva Are they doing this to books who's authors are still alive I foresee legal consequences.

Pandka

@halva It seems, that boomers were right for once.

kravietz 🦇

@halva

This is exactly how we ended up with Beavis and Butthead level of communication sophistication, as seen in the phenomenon of memes used to explain everything in this world.

Шуро
Does it allow to choose difficulty levels like in games?
Montgomery Gator

@halva The Great Gatsby ➡️ ✨The Skibidi Gyatt✨

Eleonora

@halva how to maintain a 4th grade reading level well into your 30s

DocRekd

@halva
behold, the horseshoe effect
admire how so called "left wing" shows their ableism and classism under the guise of anti capitalism anti #ai

Drew Lusion- Vtuber of Mystery

@halva "Cold hard fact about Rich men is that they want wives" - Jane Austin, apparently

quadrivial

@halva Excellent. Or I guess I should say "great".

Pēteris Krišjānis

@halva or I could just not read them at all, and avoid AI nonsense.
Yeah, that would do it.

Smörhuvud (he/surprise me)

@halva @Jorsh Yeah, the guy who taught 6th grade gifted-and-talented reading only read Reader’s Digest Condensed Editions.

CatSalad🐈🥗 (D.Burch) :blobcatrainbow:

@halva @float13 That's too difficult for me... I need an app to explain it to me like I'm five.

Alexa Devreux-Swift (She/Her)

@halva @catsalad this could be useful for,learning a second language, or if you have a certain level of illiteracy 🧐

Nonya Bidniss 🥥🌴

@halva dear god, a demand for this would explain a lot

Alda Vigdís :topspicy: 🇵🇸

@halva those people are going to learn very soon what an author's moral rights are.

Iron Bug
my sister was taking English lessons in Oxford, living in a family of linguist teachers at local Uni, they always told her we make too complicated sentences and they should be split in some simple ones. that was something that astounded me. I don't plan to make my speech simpler. no way.
