This is horrible. Reporting from Reuters revealed that the US military ran disinformation campaigns, including creating fake social media accounts, to sow doubt in the quality of COVID vaccines, masks, and tests produced by other countries.

@luckytran The only thing that surprises me is that it was the military. Had the usual suspects been defunded?

@luckytran o I'm sure they only ran such ops on China..

@luckytran On Trump’s watch, right? One assumes this was to protect American corporate profits? Follow the money. Who paid whom (corruption) to make that happen? (This is after getting past the macabre consequences).

@obviousdwest @luckytran "The U.S. military’s anti-vax effort began in the spring of 2020 and expanded beyond Southeast Asia before it was terminated in mid-2021"

Unacceptable no matter who was in charge of the government.

Still, it seemed an odd thing for Biden to do, but it's pretty classic Trump.

@Raccoon @michael_w_busch @obviousdwest @luckytran Given the massive shitshow he inherited, Biden may not have even known it was happening until he was a few months into the job.

@textualdeviance @Raccoon @obviousdwest @luckytran Per the Reuters piece, the Biden administration did shut this outrage down when they were told about it.

But the general who Reuters reports as having ordered the operation, Jonathan Braga, is still in the US military - and was promoted in 2021 August.

@michael_w_busch @textualdeviance @Raccoon @obviousdwest @luckytran Some part of me wants to give that guy a pass based on the Milgram experiment but no. 'Just following orders' has limits. Our nation wasn't in immediate danger and that kind of obedience is not good for democracy.

@Raccoon @michael_w_busch @obviousdwest @luckytran

The Biden admin terminated the program "by edict", which I assume means executive order, in spring 2021. The pentagon did not rush to pull the plug.

obscurestar

@michael_w_busch @obviousdwest @luckytran I read 'spring 2021' either way, within a few months of Biden taking office.

p

in this case, tax is absolutely theft.

@luckytran It’s one thing if they actually tested masks and identified brands of masks that were deficient or counterfeit and didn’t meet the standards printed on them but to do it in general just to discredit masks is irresponsible. And it erodes trust in leadership. A sick military is vulnerable: why didn’t they understand that?
They use protective gear against other threats.

@luckytran Good fucking thing the Pentagon budget is as transparent as a brick wall.

@luckytran That sounds like an X-Files plot come to life

@luckytran

A program initiated and undertaken by Trump.

Biden subsequently terminated the disinformation campaign in the first quarter of his inaugural year.

For those who would eagerly heap the blame on both factions seriously ask yourself how long it would take an administration to audit, intepret, craft policy and enact it. Given that team Biden had no specific clue what nasty skeletons Trump had packed into the Executive Branch's closet. 3 months is a hair-pin turn in an institution as large as the federal executive branch.

This is the option on the ballot in 2024.

@OvertonDoors @luckytran also keep in mind that while all previous administrations helped the new administration with transition teams and usually help that exceeded legal requirements while Trump’s administration had some “non cooperative” elements and by refusing to concede delayed the legal process and in many other places did just the bare minimum to help.

(Biden’s team in contrast was and is deeply experienced which helped)

@luckytran What I am curious about is if fact checkers on such social media propaganda will intercept such misinformation. If not, then what else do they intentionally allow to pass?

rugk

@DamonGang @luckytran Did you read the article?

And if the fact checkers can work freely and detect it, obviously they can catch it? Who should force them to let it pass, just don't make stupid conspiracy theories… the article explains very well what happened.

At the end it even mentions a fact checking org…

@luckytran This isn't the first indication we've heard of this though, is it?
It was a big geopolitical problem for the US that China was providing free vaccines, PPE, & tests to the developing world at the same time that US pharmaceutical companies were gouging them.

@luckytran "The military program started under former President Donald Trump and continued months into Joe Biden’s presidency, Reuters found – even after alarmed social media executives warned the new administration that the Pentagon had been trafficking in COVID misinformation. The Biden White House issued an edict in spring 2021 banning the anti-vax effort..."

Of course, it started under Spanky.

@luckytran so...while the governments of the world were publicly, ostensibly promoting public health, they were in fact secretly trying to destroy it in their competitors' (and allies') countries. Nice.

@luckytran disgusting but not surprising. Of course, they won’t be held accountable.

@luckytran I’d like to say this was unprecedented, shocking, and unconscionable, but it’s not. It’s what I’ve long suspected all along and sacrificing countless people’s lives for the sake of winning a geopolitical PR campaign is perfectly in line with what I’ve now come to expect from the US.

obscurestar

@luckytran One hopes this is sufficient to land Trump and co in the Hauge.

The USA never accepted The Hague in the first place. Trump will never be tried there, neither will any other US American.
