@dansup@pixelfed While part of the problem would be that some people simply do not read, you might at least reach a few more people if the warning about not being able to reuse the account name later was also inside a red border.
Adam's, another tactic to make the user pay attention would be to ask them to enter something, e.g. their password or the username, not a plain checkbox that can be thoughtlessly checked. Like this:
