I need to refactor account deletion in @pixelfed

You'd think the huge warnings, after you have to re-enter your password, would make it clear

Yet, a significant amount of people come back, and want to re-use their old deleted account

That's why you never ever delete accounts right away, you deactivate them and delete after a delay, giving the user enough time to reinstate their account in case they change their mind. In Smithereen this delay is 30 days.

@grishka That isn't compatible with GDPR though, in some cases you do have to delete all PII immediately

@dansup @grishka Is it possible to redact all PII, leaving just a disabled account and with just a login and password that is then deleted after 30 days?

dansup, a server administrator can delete a deactivated account immediately.

@dansup @pixelfed While part of the problem would be that some people simply do not read, you might at least reach a few more people if the warning about not being able to reuse the account name later was also inside a red border.

Adam's, another tactic to make the user pay attention would be to ask them to enter something, e.g. their password or the username, not a plain checkbox that can be thoughtlessly checked. Like this:

@dansup @pixelfed I think there will always be people, who don’t treat this warnings seriously. You could add threats 😂 are you sure? Your nickname can be taken. You will never get it back. You would become username578643. Or, you need to request account deletion 3 days in a row to delete it 🤣

@dansup @pixelfed I would consider moving the “take a break” section down into its own CTA in green / yellow before the actual delete account step. And if folks click delete; show a modal giving final warning about it being irrecoverable action and have a green CTA again saying “never mind, just freeze my account instead” - a pattern like that have worked wonders for me at work when’re similar happened

@dansup @pixelfed is there a reason the username must be retired instead of being released after a period of time?
