I am trying out some changes to the Explore tab here on mastodon.social. Only one post per author will now be displayed, allowing more different authors to be seen. I've also tweaked how quickly those posts fall off.

@lerk The "For you" section is in dire need of improvements, but it's a different story and I imagine it will take a bit longer for me to get right. @healyn It is your post that would've been the highest one that is displayed. I think that's fair enough. @jarm I am tweaking both the speed of a post moving lower and the threshold when it is no longer shown. I understand that it is important to keep showing them for longer.

@Gargron Hey, any news on the community tab not displaying anything on mobile and local/global feed as well on mobile ? Works fine on the web version tho. I heard you disabled those for performance issues @H3CAT3 I've disabled those timelines on Monday because they require relatively heavy database queries and I wanted to make sure the rest of our server works fast. They will be re-enabled at some point. @Gargron @H3CAT3 it would be awesome if you took the lessons that you learned from optimizing under load and turned that into a setting that would automatically adjust those changes when (to a reasonable degree) should it happen again. It might save some Mastodon admins some sleepness nights in the future. @Gargron Any chance of improving the language filter? Legitimately 10-15% of the post I'm seeing are non-English (and mostly Vietnamese). I understand the drive for the platform being location-neutral, but the language free-for-all is problematic. @tapandrollgames I am not satisfied with our current language filter UX, I can tell you that. But if you have the filters setup in preferences and still see wrong language posts, it's likely because the authors have not set the correct language on their posts, and there is little I can do to fix that. @Gargron so, I guess the entry on the Wish List would be 'An easy way to report accounts/posts with misidentified languages. But I can definitely see how that is a much bigger task and like quite far down the road, if it is ever to happen at all. Thanks for the response! @Gargron so, I guess the entry on the Wish List would be 'An easy way to report accounts/posts with misidentified languages'. Thanks for the response! @Gargron @tapandrollgames As a suggestion, are you able to partner with a translation engine provider (e.g. Google, Bing, Deepl) to provide translation of non-English posts? I’d find this very useful! @gargron @tapandrollgames Am I simply overlooking it or is there no option to set the language per post? Maybe having it as an option under the post when posting would also increase awareness of the feature being available and as such mean more people use it 🤔 @Gargron Newbie question: Will this affect all instances or does it ony apply to mastodon.social? @OrntLaOkro It will be part of the next version of the Mastodon software, which your admin will have the option of installing, and then it would affect you as well. @Gargron Thanks! Also thank you for your great work. Mastodon seems to be an awesome place :) @Gargron @OrntLaOkro great idea for the larger, busier servers but I’d prefer we keep it as is if possible for ours please @aussocialadmin 🙏 @Gargron my explore > posts and news tab is always empty. Did i miss a setting? @vincentvd There may be nothing in your language. It uses your interface language setting. I haven't added fallbacks when there's nothing yet. @Gargron great, when i switch from Dutch to English, it works indeed. Solved for now then until a fallback is implemented @Gargron That seems a good decision to me. Bonus question: The local timeline is empty on the web and in mobile clients. Is this just for me or a general thing on our instance? Thanks for your great work! |
@Gargron is there any way to regenerate the "Explore > For you" tab listing users?
I think it would be awesome if the users I don't follow could also "fall off" (in case I interpreted that right)
