Hitler was sentenced to 5 years in prison. But he only served 9 months due to a sympathetic judiciary and massive public outcry from his political supporters. If that sounds uncomfortably familiar, it should.

@shoq I get what you're saying. Also, Hitler was released from prison in late 1924 when he was 35 years old. Trump is 77. Just sayin'. :)

@teleskiguy MAGAs have never cared a lick about Donald Trump’s age, health, intellect, character, integrity, honestly, business acumen, bankruptcies, or humanity. So I’m not sure of your point.

His Teleness The Charlie Lama

@shoq My clumsy point aside (age difference between fascists a hundred years apart) do you think after today's events the MAGA movement will grow? I don't think it will.

Coreyartus Imagery

@teleskiguy @shoq I think the Republican response today proves you wrong. This is just going to entrench all those people who’ve drunk the koolaid.

DSM

@Coreyartus @teleskiguy @shoq this is just the first wave of the gorilla squad beating their chest. They don’t have a plan for what to do next.

@shoq His brain is deteriorating by the minute. This election is his last shot. When the next one comes around, I would be surprised if he is even able to speak comprehensibly (relatively listening to him now) at all.
I don't think you win an election with just your cult, you need chunks of the undecided voters. I don't think a display such as this trial is and was help with that. @teleskiguy

Quick, someone set up to help him get unlimited access to McDonald's in jail. We're just one infarction away from being free of him.

DSM

@IntentionallyBLANK @Vaniaji @pelha @teleskiguy @shoq but the MAGA crew will continue. I haven’t heard any plans on how to deal with them in a post-Trump world.

That's fair, but he's kind of unique in his ability to rile people and attract attention. I'd be more concerned if there was another charismatic would-be cult leader of equal proportions waiting in the wings. So far, I don't see any living meme cult leaders with Hitlerian aspirations looming in the wings.

We're not necessarily safe when he's finally gone on to his eternal reward, but I don't think we will be in as much danger as we currently are.

@pineywoozle (s) for HARRIS

@IntentionallyBLANK Cult leaders are notoriously hard to replace and I agree the #GOP bench is as shallow as a wading pool. #USPol #tRump

Thorsten_Guenther

@Pineywoozle @IntentionallyBLANK That's the fault of the #GOP itself, really. One might massively disagree with the policies of e.g. #MittRomney, but he is on a totally different level than the current gaggle of #MAGAts.

I remember when DeSantis was feared as a "Trump with brains," but he turned out to have all the charisma of cold pancakes with no syrup, and not too many brains either.

@pelha @teleskiguy @shoq you probably should hope that he stays around long enough to avoid leaving a vacuum for someone else to fill.

His Teleness The Charlie Lama

@que @pelha @shoq Would love to hear who you think would fill this vacuum.

que :verifried:

@teleskiguy @pelha @shoq no idea, and dont really want to waste energy on it tbh :)

His Teleness The Charlie Lama

@que @pelha @shoq That's fair. Just keep names like J.D. Vance (Republican US Senator from Ohio) and Josh Hawley (Republican US Senator from Missouri) and Tom Cotton (Republican US Senator from Arkansas) in mind. Peace be with you.

@teleskiguy @shoq Good point. Relevant point. Wonder if it’s enough.

Republican megadonors will simply shift from funding Trump's legal defense, to a pressure campaign on judges to reduce his sentence or GOP law makers to provide a pardon.

@shoq That's why I hesitate to celebrate too soon.

No, it doesn't sound familiar. 1) mangolini isn't going to jail for this unless he violates his terms of release, and if so at sentencing he'll get CTS. 2) america is not in the grip of a simultaneous depression, hyperinflation and paying war reparations, creating the fertile economic grounds for a hitler to take root.

argv minus one

@shoq

It doesn't. Hitler had supporters at the time, but what he didn't have was a horrible reputation among the other half of the country.

It was all, “Adolf who? Never heard of him. I guess we can cut him a break, sure.” Trump is a known quantity already, and will receive no such benefit of the doubt.

SLCW💥

@shoq I don't think Judge Merchan is going to be swayed by the fury of Trump's supporters. I expect a sentence of probation and a large fine since he's a first-time offender convicted of low-level, non-violent felonies.

@shoq The majority of everyday MAGA are cosplay cowards. The influence comes from dark money behind the scenes.

I understand that reading these horrific words are offensive and disturbing fellow citizens.

But the American people must understand that the Republican Party is now literally echoing the words of Hitler, with the momentary exception of replacing other minorities for the Jewish people.

However history records they will eventually get around to everyone, until feasting even upon themselves.

"Why does the world shed crocodile’s tears over the richly merited fate of a small Jewish minority? … I ask Roosevelt, I ask the American people: Are you prepared to receive in your midst these well-poisoners of the German people and the universal spirit of Christianity? We would willingly give everyone of them a free steamer-ticket and a thousand-mark note for travelling expenses, if we could get rid of them."

@shoq the difference is that back then nationalism and antisemitism was already quite popular in the german establishment even without nazi influence, which definitely helped Hitler seize power. Let's hope Trump will suffer from lacking such favorable political context.

There were three types of prison in Germany at that time:
- Prison: thieves, fraudsters, robbers
- Zuchthaus: sex offenders, murderers, communists. Deprivation of civil rights and the right to vote. Hard forced labour
- Imprisonment in a fortress: aristocrats, political murderers with right-wing convictions. Not dishonourable. Daily release on word of honour

Hitler was imprisoned in a fortress. During the day, his aristocratic fans invited him to the city's tea rooms and cafés. In the evenings, he dictated Mein Kampf to his deputy Rudolf Hess. He was released when only the first volume of Mein Kampf was finished; he was only able to write the second volume many years later due to a lack of time after his premature release.

@shoq Hitler was actually tried and jailed for organising a coup within a few months after the event. Trump is still waiting four years later

Axel Foley

@shoq Not over for Trump yet though, more trials to come..👀

DELETED

@shoq Obama did not go to prison after sending 20,000 bombs to Syria and Iraq and taking the lives of thousands of innocent people and after dropping them he was given the peace prize, if this does not prove the corruption of the US system then I don't know what does.

73 million seconds

@nsoolo First of all Nobel peace prize has nothing to do with the US system so mentioning it has absolutely nothing to do with the point you are trying to make. It is awarded by a private Swedish organization.

Singling out Obama here is also pretty weird since you could pretty much take any US president in recent history and say something similar.

DELETED

@73ms We are used to the US government doing this and we normalize it and see it as the “normal” thing that they do, everyone condemns Hitler but I don't see anyone condemning the presidents as they are no different than him at all.

73 million seconds

@nsoolo That is not the best take... there's still quite a difference between them and Hitler who wanted basically to genocide all the countries to the East of Germany and enslave the rest. I do agree what they are doing should not be seen as normal and acceptable for the US though.

@shoq And that was not just some missbooking of hush money for a porn star, that was an attempted coup, people died, leftists doing the same thing would have been executed. So more like January 6th.

Runyan50

@shoq @patmadigan Trump has many more indictments to go. Our Court system should get those trials over with before the election. Trump is a convicted criminal and liar, but is he the most corrupt American who ever lived? America needs to know.
