@mhoye many manufacturers are cutting back on #EV investment, though. So something has spooked them, beyond an apparent #Tesla crash in the US. Or at least they feel less compelled to push through with their earlier electrification plans.

@Setok @mhoye I have the same feeling (something spooked automakers). #Mercedes, #BMW, #vw are all cutting back their full electrical plans. This happened after the gov in #germany abrubtly stopped #ev subsidiary. At the same time, coordinated act against #china #ev exports

@hszakher @Setok @mhoye Cant help thinking that our good friends in the powerful fossil fuel lobby are doing whatever they can to sew FUD about EVs. In Canada we saw an uptick in EV FUD articles in the press after the Feds introduces the 2035 targets.

@sleepy62 @Setok @mhoye that's one way, the other is the realization of how much money is needed to upgrade the power grid...etc if the #ev adoption trend continued and decided to slow things down

@hszakher @sleepy62 @mhoye I’m not sure what the reality is there but in Finland almost nothing extraordinary needs to be done to the grid to accommodate EVs. The cars just don’t need that much extra, compared to everything else and my understanding is that concern is overblown.

@Setok @sleepy62 @mhoye it depends on the country. in #Germany, there're periodic house renovation requirements, so houses have modern electrical wiring capable of 11kw charging units without permission. but if you want 22kw unit, you have to get a permission from grid operators to ensure that 1) your house wiring can handle, 2) the grid itself can handle the load. then you have the issue with weight of EV vs ICE and the impact of that on certain infrastructure like bridges and old roads ...etc

@hszakher @sleepy62 @mhoye most people overestimate their charging needs. We went months with two EVs and just regular suko plugs. Very rarely was that not enough to be fully charged in the morning (most people don’t drive to empty every day). From what I read, the impact of weight increase is quite minimal in general but there may be some car parks that need to consider.

@sleepy62 @Setok @mhoye speaking of fuel lobby, this is just in tagesschau.de/wirtschaft/verbr
climate-friendly #diesel that is 15c to 20c more expensive than "traditional"diesel. I expect in the coming few years a roll back on the EU total ban of ICE, making it for "pure ICE" while allowing plug-in hybrids IF using HVO

@hszakher @sleepy62 @mhoye I'd argue the legislation should be worded to not specify technology, just that it most be CO2 neutral. How it achieves that doesn't really matter.

Though perhaps that is how it's worded, I'm not sure.

Though EVs do have benefits beyond that which I personally wouldn't want to give up.

@Setok @mhoye It's much easier to grow from a low starting point. Investment is for significantly higher production levels in the future.

@nafnlaus @mhoye the point is the manufacturers previously felt that the bigger investment was needed. And now they seem to feel it is less necessary.
